AUSTIN, Texas – Senior Ben Fisher of Eastern Kentucky headlines the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I Baseball Team selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
 
Fisher has been selected as the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-American® of the Year for Division I baseball. A biology major with a 3.97 G.P.A., Fisher is the first CoSIDA Academic All-America® of the Year in any sport for Eastern Kentucky and he is the sixth CoSIDA Academic All-America® selection in baseball for EKU.
 
A native of Richmond, Ky., Fisher ranks third in the NCAA with 25 home runs and is second in the nation in runs scored with 71. He also is tied for the fourth-most runs batted in nationally (72) and ranks fourth nationally with 170 total bases. His 25 home runs are a single-season record at EKU. Fisher was named a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy, recognizing the top player in college baseball.
 
Among the 33 members of the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I baseball teams, there are 19 who carry at least a 3.90 G.P.A., with nine student-athletes sporting a perfect 4.0 G.P.A. The 11 members of the Academic All-America® Division I baseball first team have an average G.P.A. of 3.91.
 
Fisher leads a CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I baseball first team that includes four student-athletes who are multi-time Academic All-America® choices, two on the first team. Hartford senior infielder David MacKinnon and Ball State senior infielder Caleb Stayton were both first team Academic All-America® selections in 2016, while Auburn senior pitcher Cole Lipscomb was a second team Academic All-America® pick in 2015 and U.S. Air Force Academy senior outfielder Russell Williams was a third team Academic All-America® selection last year.
 
The CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I baseball first team includes eight student-athletes with at least a 3.90 G.P.A., including four with a perfect 4.0.  Members of the team with a 4.0 G.P.A. are East Carolina graduate catcher Travis Watkins, Tulane senior infielder Hunter Williams, Texas State junior Theodore Hoffman and Lipscomb.
 
Oregon State junior Jake Thompson joined Lipscomb as one of two pitchers on the Academic All-America® first team.
 
Other members of the Academic All-America® first team include UNCG sophomore outfielder Andrew Moritz and Belmont designated hitter Nicholas Egli.
 
The CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I baseball second team includes seven student-athletes with a G.P.A. of 3.90 or higher and two who are repeat selections. Louisiana pitcher Dylan Moore was a CoSIDA Academic All-America® first team selection in 2016, while Georgia State junior infielder Justin Jones was a third team selection last year.

Southern Mississippi junior Kirk McCarty is the other pitcher on the Academic All-America® second team.  In addition to Graham, the Academic All-America® second team includes Mercer senior catcher Charlie Madden, as well as Mercer senior infielder Hunter Bening, St. John’s (NY) junior infielder Jesse Berardi and Tennessee Tech junior infielder Trevor Putzig.
 
The Academic All-America® second team outfield is comprised of Norfolk State senior Brian Beard, Brown junior Sam Grigo, Central Michigan junior Daniel Jipping and New Mexico sophomore Jared Mang. Pepperdine senior Aaron Barnett and Georgetown senior Jake Kuzbel were selected as the designated hitters for the Academic All-America® second team.
 
The CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I baseball third team includes four student-athletes with a G.P.A. of 3.90 or higher and a pair of repeat selections.  U.S. Naval Academy junior outfielder Stephen Born and Western Kentucky junior outfielder Kaleb Duckworth were Academic All-America® third team selections in 2016.
 
Other members of the CoSIDA Academic All-America® third team including Southern Miss sophomore pitcher Nick Sandlin, George Mason senior Tyler Zombro, Texas Arlington sophomore catcher Will Olson, McNeese State junior infielder Joe Provenzano, New Mexico junior infielder Carl Stajduhar, Stanford junior infielder Matt Winaker and East Carolina senior infielder Charles Yorgen.
 
The field for the 2017 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship, which begins this weekend at various campus sites, includes eight student-athletes, representing seven schools, who are members of the CoSIDA Division I Academic All-America® Baseball Teams – Cole Lipscomb (Auburn); Jake Thompson (Oregon State); Andrew Moritz (UNCG); Kirk McCarty and Nick Sandlin (Southern Miss); Jesse Berardi (St. John’s, N.Y.); Trevor Putzig (Tennessee Tech), and Matt Winaker (Stanford).
