Q&A with Daniel Snowden
Athletic Communications Specialist, Ole Miss
by Jessica Poole, Athletic Communications Specialist, Ole Miss
CoSIDA Goodwill and Wellness Committee Member
Daniel Snowden of Ole Miss believes following a routine has been a
key to his weight loss journey.
Some might call Ole Miss’ athletic communications specialist Daniel Snowden the great “shrinking man”. Snowden, a longtime member of the Ole Miss staff, has been on a weight loss journey over the last several years and has got himself into a routine both for exercise and eating that has helped him to shed some serious pounds over the years. Snowden shares his secrets for maintaining weight loss while in-season and talked about the importance of diet.
Q: What was the catalyst for your weight loss?
SNOWDEN: I decided I needed to lose weight and become healthier. I used the weight loss as a challenge for myself, to see how far I could push myself.
Q: How do you maintain a regular workout routine especially during basketball season?
SNOWDEN: Follow a routine. If you make something part of your day, it becomes second nature and you don’t even think about it. It’s easy to find an excuse not to exercise, but if it’s important you can make time. When I wake up in the morning, I think about my day and plan out when I’ll have an hour free. It might be at lunch, after work or at 10 pm, but I can usually find time.
Q: How much has change in diet played a role in your weight loss?
SNOWDEN: I definitely changed the way I eat, but not necessarily what I eat. I still eat pregame meal, but maybe just not steak and pasta! Plus, after running for an hour you might decide the pizza on the bus after the game just isn’t worth it!
Q: What’s your favorite exercise to do on the road and how do you manage to get the time in to do it?
SNOWDEN: I run on the road because hotels always have a treadmill. It’s convenient to squeeze in a run before shoot around or after practice the night before a game.
Q: How do you maintain the weight loss given the hectic lifestyle of an SID?
SNOWDEN: Having a routine is the most important part. I view exercise as personal time. Not only does to help lose weight, but it allows me to relax and focus on something other than work. It is definitely a stress reliever.
Q: What advice would you give another SID that’s looking to lose weight?
SNOWDEN: The hardest thing to do is start. Once you fully commit and get the ball rolling it becomes part of your life. The first time you get on the scale after a week of working out and see you have lost a couple of pounds it motivates you. After that you just want to chase that feeling and see how far you can push yourself.
