Jevon Carter of West Virginia, Cherise Beynon of New Mexico headline CoSIDA Academic All-America® NCAA Division I Basketball Teams

AUSTIN, Texas – West Virginia University senior guard Jevon Carter and The University of New Mexico senior guard Cherise Beynon highlight the 2017-18 Academic All-America® Division I basketball teams as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Carter has been named the 2017-18 CoSIDA Academic All-America® of the Year for Division I men’s basketball, while Beynon earned the distinction of 2017-18 CoSIDA Academic All-America® of the Year for Division I women’s basketball.
A sport management major with a 3.51 GPA, Carter was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year for the second-straight season. He was a 2017-18 unanimous choice for the All-Big 12 First Team, and is a three-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team. Carter has been named to the All-Big 12 Defensive Team all four years with the Mountaineers. Carter was the Arthur Ashe Jr. Men’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and is a finalist for several national awards including the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award and the John R. Wooden Award.
Beynon becomes a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-America® First Team selection after earning the honor last year as well. A business administration major with a 4.1 GPA, Beynon closed out her final season with a third straight All-Mountain West First Team honor, and a second straight All-Mountain West Defensive Team selection. She is also a three-time Mountain West Scholar-Athlete and Academic All-Mountain West selection for the Lobos.
Of the 16 members on the 2017-18 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I men’s basketball teams, 11 have at least a 3.80 GPA, with five student-athletes sporting a perfect 4.0 GPA. The five members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.89, with all three teams combining for a 3.80 GPA.
The CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I Men’s Basketball teams have four repeat performers – Joshua Braun (Grand Canyon University), Jordan Howard (University of Central Arkansas), A.J. Jacobson (North Dakota State University) and Tyler Seibring (Elon University) – from last year’s CoSIDA Academic All-America® teams. Additionally, Jacobson and Braun were named to the 2015-16 CoSIDA Academic All-America® teams.
Twelve of the 16 members of the 2017-18 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I women’s basketball teams have at least a 3.90 GPA, with 10 student-athletes maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA. The five members of the first team have an average GPA of 4.02, with the three teams combining for a 3.91 GPA.
Along with Beynon, the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I Women’s Basketball teams have four other repeat performers – Amanda Cahill (Indiana University), Jordan Korinek (Kent State University), Kia Nurse (University of Connecticut) and Carlie Wagner (University of Minnesota) – from last year’s CoSIDA Academic All-America® teams.
