AUSTIN, Texas – Eight repeat selections headline the 2017-18 Academic All-America® Division III Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams in selections announced Wednesday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Averett University’s Samm Chandler, a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-America® honoree, and Nebraska Wesleyan’s Cooper Cook, a two-time Academic All-America® pick, lead this octet with their selections as the 2018 CoSIDA Academic All-America® of the Year for Division III women’s and men’s basketball, respectively.
Joining Chandler and Cook as repeat honorees are Mikaela Eppard from Elmhurst, Nate Axelrod from Ohio Wesleyan, David Stokman from Saint John’s (Minn.), Edvinas Rupkus from Skidmore, Brandon Federici from Franklin & Marshall and Wes McKinney from Hanover. Eppard is a two-time first team selection. Axelrod, Rupkus and Stokman are first team honorees in 2018 after having moved up from second and third teams in 2017, respectively. Federici matches his second team selection from one year ago while McKinney is a third team pick this season after having earned second team accolades in 2017.
Chandler, a Burnsville, North Carolina native, has a 3.97 GPA as a biomedical science/wellness & sports medicine major. She is a four-time All-USA South Conference honoree, earning first team accolades the past three seasons, and is the eighth woman in program history to score at least 1000 career points. She finished her career with 1,694 and 810 rebounds after starting all 106 games she played in.
Cook, from Overland Park, Kansas, boasts a perfect 4.0 GPA as an accounting major. He is a two-time first team All-IIAC honoree, earning MVP honors in 2016-17, and has led NWU to a 28-3 record and the NCAA Division III Final Four with averages of 16.5 points and 6 rebounds per game. Cook also earned All-Region honors last season from both the NABC and D3hoops.com.
The 15-woman CoSIDA Academic All-America® women’s team has an average GPA of 3.95 with the first team matching that mark. Six of the 15 women have perfect 4.0 GPAs.
The 17-man CoSIDA Academic All-America® men’s team has a 3.84 GPA with the first team checking in at 3.91. Two men boast perfect 4.0s.
The Division III Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2017-18 Division III Academic All-America® teams program.
