CoSIDA U Camp Panelists Announced

A variety of experienced sports communications professionals from different regions, divisions and experiences will be presenting for the panels and topics at the first-ever CoSIDA U Camp presented by Capital One.

The event will be held Monday June 25 and Tuesday, June 26 at the Crowne Plaza Annapolis prior to the #CoSIDA18 Convention at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in nearby National Harbor, Maryland.
 
This new event is affordable and all-inclusive with a baseball game and picnic, panels designed for students and newcomers, breakfast, a personal networking Q&A lunch, prize drawings and a certificate of completion. All this for a low registration fee of just $59. The Crowne Plaza is offering a special CoSIDA U Camp rate of just $99, single/double, for both Monday and Tuesday nights.

Tuesday's panelists average 14 years in the profession, with five veterans over 20 years and five other presenters with less then 10 years. From the basics of the profession...to resume development and searching for a position...to what individuals look for when hiring...to expectations from broadcast and print media professionals...to stat systems, designing and photo editing...to specific writing techniques...to a mock press conference, we've got it covered with these talented and experienced professionals. Plus, there will be personal networking opportunities at the baseball game meet and greet as well as the lunch on Tuesday.

Check in at the stadium 5:00 p.m. includes game and picnic tickets and game notes.
Pre-game festivities include speakers from the BaySox and the picnic.
Two attendees will be selected for the ceremonial “first pitch.”

8:30 - 9:20 a.m  So You Want to be an SID?
Presenters: Steve Flegel (Whitworth), Chevonne Mansfield (LEAD1), Andrew Mindeman (Covenant)
Learn and review the basics of the sports communications profession. What are the core components of the job? What are the expectations and differences for the varied levels and divisions? What you need to know.
 
9:30 – 10:20 a.m.   Resume, Search & Find GPS
Presenters: Ryan Bower (Florida Southern), Danny Kambel (Pacific, Ore.), Meghan O'Brien (ECAC)
Discussion centers around building your resume, job search tips and getting noticed, to preparing and handling interviews. This panel will be your "GPS" guide to help get you ready for that next position. You will also hear thoughts from those who hire entry-level positions.
 
10:30 – 11:20 a.m.    Need to Knows from Media Pros
Presenters: Jim Powers (Maryville) with local media members (TBA)
Broadcast and print media professionals will talk about their game preparation needs, how to pitch a feature, developing a relationship and communication with the media to benefit you and your student-athletes.
 
11:30 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. Networking Q&A Lunch
Enjoy lunch with other attendees and members of the CoSIDA U Committee for questions and discussions.
 
12:30 – 2:00 p.m.    Hands on Table Topics
Featuring: Brian Henry (West Florida), Wendy Mayer (CoSIDA Programming Chair), Dan O’Connell (Towson, retired), Sammi Wellman (Cal Baptist), and more
Attendees will learn first-hand about these important attributes of the profession, with rotating sessions for InDesign, Photoshop, Stat Crew and Presto Sports statistics.
 
2:15 – 3:00 p.m.       Right on Writing!
Presenters: Mark Adkins (Manchester), Ashley Robbins (UMass Lowell), Dave Walters (Guilford)
Learn the various ways of writing, including a student-athlete feature, post-game recap and writing for the web (for example, season outlooks, game previews, a community event, etc.). You’ll know the "right" way to write!
 
3:15 – 4:00 p.m.    The Press Conference ... and You
Moderator: Robin Ashley (UMass Los Angeles),
Coaches: Rif Refbater (Texas Canadian), Dick Slickback (Atlantic Pacific)
Our day will wrap up with a fun, engaging and interactive post-game press conference where you play the role of the media. At the end, we will discuss what went wrong and what went right. At the end of the press conference, Coach Slickback will draw winner for the Camp’s grand prize winner – a free registration to the 2019 CoSIDA Convention in Orlando, Florida!
