What do you get when you hold a special leadership programming track, a session on diversity and inclusion, a Town Hall forum on the pertinent issues in athletic communications, and community service project which attracted hundreds of donated items and almost the same number of volunteers, a speed networking session, mentorship and committee meetings and a kickoff social event?
Phew. That’s day one at the 2018 CoSIDA Convention. (See the full program at
CoSIDA.com/2018convention).
Nearly 1,110 attendees graced the floors and rooms of the Gaylord National Resort in National Harbor, Maryland as CoSIDA opened its 2018 convention Wednesday.
The #CoSIDA18 programming kicked off with the third annual SIDEARM Sports Leadership Forum Presented by Learfield. This special leadership training brought together more than 60 athletic communications pros, senior-level administrators in sports communications, athletic directors and executives who have impacted college sports for panel discussions and networking opportunities.
The presenters ranged from nationally renown outside communications strategists from Edelman, SM2 and Anachel Communications and the Sanderson Strategies Group along with Clemson University Director of Athletics Dan Radakovich, Northern Illinois Associate VP/Director of Athletics directors Sean Frazier for discussions on silo busting, defining your department culture, managing up and crisis and digital brand terrorism. Additionally there was a popular case study session on
“Focus On What Matters Most - and Learn How to Say NO” conducted by University of Wisconsin’s Senior Associate Athletics Director Justin Doherty and Director of Athletic Communications Brian Lucas. There was a lively Q&A discussion during “All Things Media: Trending Topics” where the attendees heard from Dennis Dodd, CBSSports.com, John X. Miller, Senior Editor at The Undefeated; and Gail Sideman, publicist/communications consultant and former SID.
The video below features two of the Leadership Forum presenters: Carrie Gerlach Cecil, CEO of SM2 and Anachel Communications with SM2’s Ramsey Posten, the strategic counsel, crisis management, and litigation communications partner. They specialize in brand reputation management and digital brand terrorism and are leaders in digital and traditional crisis communications management. Working closely with numerous athletic universities, conferences and professional sports organizations and others such as the NFL, NCAA, Fox Sports, ESPN, NASCAR, Universal Television and Sony Corporate America, among others.
