The second day of the CoSIDA convention started with a kickoff breakfast high-energy presentation from communications consultant Kraig Kann.

This was followed by divisional day programming for distinct member groups (NCAA Division I, Division II, Division III, NAIA, Two-Year Schools, Conference Offices and U Sports).

Divisional day sessions were broken up by the annual CoSIDA Hall of Fame luncheon, with that luncheon beginning a star-studded day of celebration at #CoSIDA18.

In addition to the induction of the CoSIDA Hall of Fame Class of 2018 (BL Elfring of Southern Maine. Steve Hatchell of the National Football Foundation, Ed Hill of Howard, Bill Jones of Skidmore, Mike Kirk of Central Oklahoma, Diane Nordstrom of Wisconsin), CBS Sports’ Jim Nantz received the organization’s Jake Wade Award for his outstanding contribution in the media in the field of intercollegiate athletic, while NCAA Managing Director of Division III Louise McCleary was honored with the Keith Jackson Eternal Flame award for her lasting support and contributions to intercollegiate athletics, and for being a loyal supporter and advocate of CoSIDA and its mission.

CoSIDA's Lifetime Achievement Award recipients received recognition as these retirees or soon-to-be retirees were saluted for their distinguished careers: Mike Finn (ACC), Mike Kirk (Central Oklahoma), Jack Neumann (Calgary), Scott Selheimer (Delaware), Ralph Zobell (BYU) and Bob Ziadie (King's College).

CoSIDA Achievement Award honorees Kent Lowe (LSU) and Shane Hermann (North Alabama) also were recognized as CoSIDA's top associate or assistant athletic communications directors.

The evening activities continued the star-studded theme as CoSIDA honored its Google Cloud Academic All-America Hall of Fame class. Four of the greats in their sports also balanced academic success with philanthropic work and they read like a who’s-who in the sports world: noted sociologist and activist Dr. Harry Edwards who ran track and played basketball at San José State; Jason Hanson (retired record-setting Detroit Lions kicker); Mike Lowell, former MLB baseball standout with the Florida Marlins and Red Sox; and NFL and college football star Peyton Manning, in the orange of Tennessee. Their messages and recollections as collegiate scholar-athletes were thoughtful, humerous and insightful.

The day concluded with a big social, sponsored by our long-time partner ESPN called Party at the Pier. Hundreds of CoSIDA members took a stroll to the nearby waterfront where they met with numerous ESPN personalities, enjoyed drinks and desserts to cap off a wonderful day of programming/work, networking and socializing.

#CoSIDA18 Blog: From A Convention Attendance Grant Winner's Perspective
by Dan Ryan, Bethune-Cookman Athletic Communications Historian/Senior Writer

So (CoSIDA Director of Professional Development and External Affairs) Barb Kowal wanted one of the grant recipients to do a daily blog, in which I would category my thoughts and feelings and highlights of my first CoSIDA experience.

Hmm. Highlights?

I took a selfie with first vice-president Rob Knox.

I confirmed that Ira Thor is not an urban legend and does exist, just like Slash (South Park humor. Sorry).

That crash you probably heard was Barb regretting her decision. Hope it wasn’t.

I don’t know how much wisdom/observatory power/profound observation I can contribute from my first 24 hours. Kraig Kann’s seminar made me think. I met a legend — Jim Nantz and he said “a tradition unlike any other” for me which was as cool as his giving props to another SID from my conference and sharing a story that’s practically the same experience I have regarding memories. As a women’s basketball SID, 10 minutes with AP’s national women’s college basketball writer, Doug Feinberg, would have justified my entire week if I weren’t on the grant program.

Other than that, I can’t be that profound today. Except for one thing.

One of the first people I met here was (CoSIDA second vice president) Herb Vincent. Thirty-three years ago, he was the PR guy for the USFL’s Los Angeles Express and I was writing a Steve Young feature. Wild.

Ed Hill being enshrined in the Hall of Fame. Met him in 1983.

UCF’s Eric DeSalvo killed his presentation. I used to worked for his dad at the Florida Times-Union. Wild.

My room mate and I were at the Montana-Weber State Big Sky Championship Game in 2010. We both served LDS missions. He is one of the 1,000 or so people here at the convention and, I don’t believe in coincidences…

New friends who noticed my Facebook posts congratulated me on my first NCAA championship as an SID at Oregon.

People who have come and gone in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference have come up to say hi. Friendships have been restarted immediately. Some friendships never stopped. You simply pick up and it’s like the moment you last saw each other.

Maybe that is the profound thing from Day One. I’ll get back to you tomorrow.

But, wow…Ira Thor really does exist. The Rob Knox selfie looked pretty good, also.
