In Memoriam: Dave Geringer - 1954-2019

CoSIDA joins the family and friends in mourning the death of Dave Geringer, who passed away after a short illness on Saturday, December 7 at the age of 65. Geringer served the UMass Dartmouth athletics department as Sports Information Director from 2005 through 2013, followed by a stop at Sul Ross State.

A veteran intercollegiate athletic administrator, Dave served in various roles in the college sports information profession for 30 years, including previous stints at Alaska-Fairbanks, the New York Institute of Technology, Florida International, Lynn, Bemidji State, Alfred State and Texas-Pan American. He worked with student-athletes at all five levels of intercollegiate competition in Divisions I, II and III as well as NAIA & junior college during the course of his career.

Born in Queens, N.Y. in 1954, Dave arrived on the South Coast in 2005 and succeeded Hall of Fame SID Bill Gathright in the position at UMass Dartmouth, where he directed the athletic communications efforts for a department that at the time sponsored 27 programs. Dave earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Buffalo and studied mass communications at the University of Minnesota, and in 2012 he received the 25-Year-Award from the College Sports Information Directors of America  (CoSIDA) for his longtime service to the profession.

An avid fan of many sports, Dave was most happiest watching his beloved Washington Nationals in action, and he was rewarded in early November when the franchise won an epic seven game World Series decision over the Houston Astros.

Dave is survived by his sister, Edye, his brother-in-law, Robert, his niece Molly and his nephew Jake.

Services for Dave Geringer will take place on Wednesday, December 11 in the Chapel of Newton Cemetery, 791 Walnut Street in Newton, Mass. at Noon. A memorial observance will be held at the home of Edye Geringer following the burial until 8:00 pm on Wednesday and again from 3:00-7:00 pm on Thursday, December 12.
