June Stewart, a CoSIDA Trailblazer

When June joined the Vanderbilt University Athletics Department in 1973 (first as a secretary before rising to Assistant AD prior to her retirement in 2003), she was one of the very few women employed by a college athletic department.

June Stewart began her career in the Vanderbilt sports information office in 1973 and was named assistant SID in 1977. From 1979-90, she served as Vanderbilt's women's sports information director. In 1990, Stewart was promoted to women's sports program director and assistant athletics director for future revenue sports.

In her three-plus decades in collegiate athletic administration, Stewart was on the ground floor of sweeping changes in college sports, working to publicize the widespread growth of women’s participation and women’s teams while implementing the important changes in athletic marketing and technology.

Stewart became the first woman to be president of CoSIDA for the 1990-91 academic year after entering the officers rotation as 3rd VP in 1987-88. She was inducted into the CoSIDA Hall of Fame in 1997 and received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000. In 2003, she received the Mary Jo Haverbeck Trailblazer Award from CoSIDA.

June Stewart, a longtime Vanderbilt athletics administrator and a pioneer for women in college athletics, died Tuesday following a lengthy struggle with the effects of Alzheimer's disease. She was 78.

A Nashville native and Hillsboro High School graduate, Stewart joined the Vanderbilt athletics department in 1973 as a secretary and retired in 2001 after eight years as associate director of athletics. Along the way, she built a reputation as one of the most influential females in college athletics, particularly in the field of sports information.

In 1990-91, Stewart was the first woman to serve as president of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). She began as an assistant sports information director in 1975 and became Vanderbilt’s women’s sports athletics director in 1977.

In 1986, Stewart moved into administration when she was named Vanderbilt's senior women’s administrator. She was promoted to assistant athletics director for sports programs in 1991.

Her career also included stints on the NCAA Women’s Basketball Committee and the SEC Executive Committee.

The Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame inducted Stewart in 2004. She also is a member of the CoSIDA Hall of Fame (1997), the Tennessee Sports Writers Hall of Fame (2007) and the Vanderbilt Athletics Hall of Fame (2008).
