Jeremy Rosenthal – Indiana University, Assistant Director of Media Relations
2019 CoSIDA Rising Star Award - University Division

by Danny Kambel, Pacific University Sports Information Director

“Pride. Passion. Dedication. Three simple words, but qualities for anyone to own. Three words that personify Jeremy Rosenthal.”

That is high praise from Jeff Keag, Senior Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations at Indiana University. And, a perfect description of the latest recipient of the CoSIDA Rising Star University Division award — Rosenthal, the assistant director for media relations for the Hoosiers.

Rosenthal, who grew up in the backdrop of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, but now bleeds Indiana Cream and Crimson, finds joy by constantly giving back to others through opportunities and experiences.

He takes pride in watching the jubilation of freshly minted graduates tossing caps into the air after embracing the full student-athlete experience, and working closely with the media to find a niche for covering one of his unheralded student-athletes or coaches.

In speaking of Jeremy, former IU volleyball coach Sherry Dunbar-Kruzan stated that “Sports information is the front porch of our program. Our fans, recruits and general public have a bird’s eye view of our program because, at Indiana, we are fully engaged in broadening our social media and multimedia base. Jeremy is selfless and puts his professional work before anything else. He is our biggest fan, and any of our other 24 sports at Indiana University would be fortunate to have him.”

That is just a glimpse at Jeremy through the lens of Indiana University, but there is so much more to him than that.

From volunteering each year at the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship to setting up a Facebook page to encourage his colleagues through the CoSIDA Fitness Challenge events and initiatives, or simply having the feeling of his adidas shoes hitting the pavement for one more mile in pursuit of a dream. These are a few of the things that bring Jeremy happiness.

Rosenthal has been known to take advantage of team road trips to log miles in various temperatures and cities across the country. He even squeezed in the Columbus Marathon on a road trip to The Ohio State University. When he finished the race, much to his surprise, he found his Hoosier volleyball team showering him with praise much like he had done for them throughout the season. His running efforts even landed him a spot in the prestigious Boston Marathon a few Aprils ago.

That passion for running has offered Rosenthal another avenue of giving back through the CoSIDA Goodwill and Wellness Committee, where he serves as the coordinator of the annual 5k Fun Run/2 Mile Walk held in conjunction with the CoSIDA and NACDA national conventions. The winner of the inaugural event at the 2011 CoSIDA Convention in Marco Island, Florida, Rosenthal has brought about significant changes to the event including awards, race shirts, sponsorships and electronic timing.

CoSIDA Second Vice President Sam Atkinson expressed a direct correlation between Rosenthal’s involvement and the success of the 5K over the years.

“The event continues to grow in numbers and in popularity, and that growth can be attributed to Jeremy’s dedication to the event and passion to the see the event grow and become bigger and bigger,” said Atkinson, Gallaudet University Associate AD for Communications and the inagural chair of the Goodwill and Wellness Committee.

As current committee chair Chris Mitchell, Assistant AD for Communications at Washington University in St. Louis says, “Jeremy cares deeply about CoSIDA and this event, and making a difference each year for our local charity.”

That passion and dedication was on prominent display at the 2018 CoSIDA / NACDA & Affiliates 5k Run/Walk as Rosenthal’s family and friends were a part of the event as a stress fracture kept him from partaking himself.

When word made it out publicly about Rosenthal receiving this Rising Star Award, many people reached out to recognize him. The social media threads were filled with members of the media, former coaches and student-athletes as well as colleagues in the sports information profession. Indicative of who he is as an individual, Jeremy wrote back a personalized response to each person.

The congratulations messages all had a common thread. Marlene Navor, his former supervisor and current Director of Athletics Communications at College of Charleston, notes that “What stands out the most to me about Jeremy is his continued work ethic, enthusiasm and efforts to promote each and every one of his athletic programs, coaches and student-athletes. No sport has ever been bigger than another to him.”

Current Lead1 Association Director of Communications Chevonne Mansfield, a 2011 recipient of the Rising Star Award, had this to say about this year’s honoree. “For someone, who has made a career out of publicizing others, it’s always nice to be recognized, too. They don’t come any better or work any harder than Jeremy Rosenthal.”

Whether at the start line of the CoSIDA 5K or at the finish line of student-athlete’s college career or anywhere along the way, you can be sure that Jeremy will be there and that is exactly why he is very deserving of this award.

“Jeremy is the epitome of a giver and is always asking how he can help make everyone’s else life easier or better,” noted CoSIDA Convention Programming Committee vice chair Wendy Mayer. “Whether making a special birthday version of your name card on press row, or calling the home SID or other friends from the business in town to have dinner on each road trip, he always makes everyone else feel appreciated. This Rising Star award is as much about who he is as a person as it is who he is as an SID.”
