The #CoSIDA19 Convention kicked off with a full day of high-energy and diverse programming on June 9 at the Orlando World Center Marriott. Invited presenters included outside leadership specialists, Director of Athletics from NCAA Division I, II, III and the NAIA, conference colleagues and those from our own CoSIDA membership. They spoke on navigating your career path, crisis and issue management, positioning and promoting yourself. The Educational Lounge sessions, our small group, preregistration-only "learning labs" of 32 attendees or less, covered digital technology skills, graphic and video work, social media strategy and management.
The two-day SIDEARM Sports Leadership Forum, presented by Learfield IMG, attracted our biggest-ever group of senior communications leaders and those who aspire to join those leadership ranks. Topics were carefully selected and the invited speakers are highly-acclaimed and nationally-recognized thought-leaders, educators and collegiate athletic administrators. In addition to offering strategy-related communications topics, the SIDEARM Sports Leadership Forum event provides an exceptional opportunity for broadening professional networks.
Sunday's speakers included motival speaker and leadership leader Dr. Derek Greenfield, sports psychologist Dr. Jarrod Spencer; NCAA Senior Vice President of Communications Bob Williams and Erik Christianson, NCAA Managing Director, External Affairs; and national media figures Matt Fortuna (The Athletic, FWAA President), Malcom Moran (USBWA Executive Director) and Holly Rowe (ESPN reporter).
Later, Dr. Greenfield then gave the keynote presentation to the greater CoSIDA membership in attendance. On the topic of diversity and inclusion and leadership, Greenfield took the room and attendees by storm in his high-energy, thought-provoking keynote presentation. He engaged and challenged the room from the start, connecting and inspiring as he spoke on "Confronting Ourselves - Building For Inclusive Excellence in the SID Profession."
One of Greenfield's most impactful messages: “Diversity is often seen as counting heads ... Inclusion is making sure that all the heads count.”
At the Job Seekers/Career Centerl session for those job hunters, 16 employers presented to 40 job seekers. Currently, there are 103 openings in athletic communications.
The night concludedw with a kickoff reception in the exhibit hall, hosted by SIDEARM Sports, and the ESPN College Sports Cavern at Tomkos Tavern.
