Critical Conversation: Crafting & Communicating the Messages of a University Diversity Plan
Original Date: Thursday, October 8, 2020

Athletic department administrators are being asked by their universities to come up with actionable diversity plans. The three presenters on the Oct. 8th webinar spoke on the definitions and differences in what diversity, equity and inclusion are, how athletic communications professionals can engage colleagues and work alongside them to drafting such plans and build crucial communications strategies and messaging strategies as it pertains to diversity plans.

The presenters also answered the following questions and raised the following points:
  • What are the initial steps in crafting a diversity plan? Who should be included?
    • How can athletic departments join forces with diversity offices and other campus departments in these creations and messaging?
    • How can all SIDs, regardless of their title, role on campus, responsibilities and years in the profession - contribute to creating these messages, and how can they go about developming key relationships with campus leaders and stakeholders? What are key things that communicators can do to ensure their voices are heard?
The significant roles that student-athletes play when it comes to messaging
  • What’s the potential role/connection within school’s respective conference
  • A discussion of the most beneficial (not costly) programming events that you have seen to aid in diversity, equity and inclusion education
  • How do you execute a diversity plan?
  • How can you make sure your message sounds genuine and not just a part of the trend, and how do you get student-athlete and staffs to buy into the plan and the messaging strategies
