In the second release of CoSIDA’s compensation and career satisfaction survey data, staff size, responsibilities and career considerations are explored.
As illustrated in the infographic, overall career satisfaction is high with a nod to good benefits packages and workplace flexibility. The graphic also shows the growth of responsibilities for CoSIDA members as well as the stagnation of compensation and titles relative to the growth.

Kevin Trainor (Arkansas) of the CoSIDA Advocacy Committee as they discuss the results and offer strategies for members who are seeking to align their goals with that of the athletics director or commissioner, show value, build their skill sets and position themselves to help struggling athletic departments and their universities during and after the COVID-19 crisis.

A few highlights from the many insightful takeaways from the panelists include:
STEVE FLEGEL (12:50): You know in some ways I think our job is more important now during this crisis than it was even during when things were normal. It's perhaps never more important for us to tell the story of our school's athletics department and finding that content that tells the story…you need to tell that story and for some of our schools, doing that is so crucial right now for retention or recruitment for admissions for the survival of the school. And so whatever part we can play in that is vital. Thinking outside the box and telling that story is now more important than ever. Which obviously goes beyond the traditional idea of what we do in our job.
KEVIN TRAINOR (22:44): The whole uncomfortable part of this question is we can all determine what we think is best for the success of our program, but that's not really the question. Our coaches, our administration, they're looking at us through a lens of what they feel like is the most important, and the (institutional) mission is a great place to start. Sometimes we're guilty in this industry of wanting to hold onto things we've done for a number of years because it's our identity. In today's society, when they're adding new things, we don't have to look at those things as not being worthwhile anymore, but maybe the time has passed. How can we look at things differently because we will be judged by other’s perspectives of what is going to bring our institution the most success, not necessarily what we feel like it is? And that's uncomfortable to say because we'd like to be in control of that. But the truth is we're not, and we're being judged against the standard that is being set by others.
KENISHA RHONE (28:26): There's so many things that we can do to add to our career satisfaction instead of just making our plate be unmanageable and difficult to carry. We have to be intentional about the ways that we are searching for completing the picture of what satisfaction looks for us.
DANNY BARNTS (30:08): When you do look at the bar graphs within career satisfaction, I was very impressed with the number of people, 84%, that found they have workplace flexibility. I find that as kind of a unique thing because we do talk about the number of hours that we work and that it can be long, but it's nice to hear that people do feel that they have some flexibility and when they're going to do it. We know a lot of things are rigid, but that is an important part for the work-life balance.
