June Stewart Leadership Series (Presented by Capital One)
Now What? The role of athletic communications as we move forward through COVID-19.
Original Date: May 12, 2020
This next installment in our special leadership webinar series saw three high-level athletic administrators (two Director of Athletics, one Deputy Commissioner) offer insights, suggestions and solutions to today’s greatest challenges and opportunities in communications as we navigate through the COVID-19 pandemic and an uncertain college sports future. The presenters talked about the best ways and strategies for college athletic organizations — and in particular, for athletic communicators to work with their colleagues — to keep everyone informed, internally and externally, while also “telling the stories” of your organization.
While the immediate focus is on navigating through COVID-19, colleges and universities are thinking about continuity and a restoration of campus life. There was discussion on how the SID can assist in messaging, communication and branding moving forward. As each institution/conference and its leadership continue to rely on its communications staff and resources, the questions were asked and answered on: what role does — and will — athletic communications staff play to help your campus/conference successfully navigate through this crisis? What are strategies for communicating with constituents both inside and outside your organization?

Andrew Gavin – University of Wisconsin-Parkside, Director of Athletics
Amy Yakola – Atlantic Coast Conference, Deputy Commissioner and Chief of External Affairs/CoSIDA Board member, 2016-19
