There is compelling evidence that strong relationships contribute to a long and happy life.
Then
Doug Hauschild, the director of athletics communication at University of Dayton, may be one of the happiest men alive. He is the king of building strong, meaningful relationships.
And, for his long-time commitment, accomplishments, relationship-building and service to athletic communications, Doug is one of the 2020 inductees into the CoSIDA Hall of Fame.
His entire career, which spans 42 years and counting – all with the Flyers, is based on building incredible relationships with his family, coaches, student-athletes, colleagues, student workers, and media members. Hauschild is a tremendous ambassador for the athletics communication profession. In addition to being one of the most revered SIDs because of his expertise, his friendly demeanor, and his thorough work, he is also one of the kindest, generous, and selfless individuals you'll ever meet.
Let’s start with his family. From 1979-81 Hauschild was a student worker in the University of Dayton athletics communication office. He met his future wife Patty at UD and both are 1981 graduates. They have three children, Kim, Rob, and Michael, who also attended college at Dayton. Michael was a standout senior pitcher for Dayton baseball, and a member of UD's 2009 and 2012 Atlantic 10 championship teams. He has pitched in Major League Baseball for the Texas Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays.

Football and basketball games truly are a family affair at UD. Patty and Kim are regulars on the Dayton football and basketball Statcrew and Rob and Michael have been known to fill in as well. Patty, Rob, and Kim are always involved with the NCAA First Four and are a major reason it runs so smoothly.
“Growing up, we were beyond blessed to have dad be the SID at the University of Dayton. Not only did we get to see one of the best fan bases in the country, front and center, we also got to see behind the scenes of him working, not only regular season games, but also tournament games,” said his daughter Kim. “Between conference games and the NCAA games we’ve seen him be a rock star and couldn’t be more amazed by him.”
As for building relationships with coaches, it probably helps, he was a coach. Fun fact, from 1981-83, Hauschild was the head softball coach at UD and still holds the school record for career winning percentage! He’s a long-time volunteer coach for a youth baseball team in the Dayton area and also the president of the Beavercreek Sox, a community-based select baseball organization for teams from age eight to high school.
This new Hall of Famer has worked with legendary Hall of Fame Dayton coaches Don Donoher (men’s basketball) and Mike Kelly (football), as well as Rick Chamberlin, Jim O’Brien, Oliver Purnell, Brian Gregory, Archie Miller, and current coach Anthony Grant (who also played at UD while Hauschild was at Dayton).
Hauschild’s told many compelling stories of Flyer teams and student-athletes to local, regional, and national audiences. UD men’s basketball has been to 21 NCAA games during his tenure, including two Regional Finals appearances. He’s helped promote 60+ First Team All-Americans for the Flyer football program. He is the coordinator for the UD Athletics Hall of Fame and has helped usher in new inductees since 1982, making the occasion special for each one.
“Doug has long been a valued colleague and public relations advisor to me and many others over his decades of service,” said Neil Sullivan, Dayton’s Vice President/Director of Athletics. “He is always professional, calm and measured. I value his judgement and counsel. I am grateful for him.”
Hauschild was presented with the A-10 Bob Vetrone Award for outstanding media service in 2012. The award recognizes one whose service, professionalism and commitment have made a lasting contribution to the student-athletes and institutions of the Atlantic 10 Conference.
“I had the opportunity to talk to Doug at length about hosting the First Four and while he was busy with his football work, Doug patiently answered all of my questions,” said Drew Dickerson, Atlantic 10 assistant commissioner. “Two years later when I was hired by the A-10, my first congratulatory call came from Doug.”
Hauschild, who has served on the CoSIDA Academic All-America Committee since 1993, was also honored by CoSIDA a few years ago with the 2009 Bob Kenworthy Community Service Award. He has devoted 50+ years to youth coaching in four different sports, and served several terms as a league supervisor and commissioner. He has been media coordinator for the Southwest Ohio Senior Olympic six times as well as working as a volunteer with the Special Olympics for five years at its area meet. Doug has also been a regular on-call apheresis blood donor since the late 1980s.
More than 50 former student workers in the Dayton athletics communication office have gone on to a career in the sport industry at the college or professional levels. Hauschild takes pride in serving as a mentor for the 15+ student workers each year.
“Doug has become a mentor to me, as well as many others. In addition to his willingness to share his knowledge and expertise, Doug has taken an interest in my goals and has provided guidance in my professional growth,” said Brendan Mullaney, a graduating senior who has worked in the UD athletics communication department. “He has always given me the opportunities to take on more responsibilities and roles in the office. The relationships he builds with students extend beyond the workplace, as he is willing to help us how ever he can and always treats us with respect.”
Hauschild creates such a hospitable environment in his media room, he was honored by the Football Writers Association of America with a Press Box Merit Award given for outstanding press box working services.
“I've often praised Doug for being one of the best in the business because he's responsible for the pop selection in the media room at UD Arena. Orange Crush, Grape Crush, Mountain Dew, you name it. I've been in media rooms across the country and have never seen anything like it. Of course, that's a only a small part of what makes him good at his job,” said David Jablonski, Dayton basketball beat writer for Dayton Daily News. “He's friendly and easygoing and handles all media requests with respect and professionalism. I've seen him handle the best and worst of times about as well as anyone could in my seven seasons on the beat. There's rarely a dull moment in Dayton basketball. Whether you work with him all the time like me or once or twice a year like many reporters, it's always a pleasure.”
And Hauschild, who has built his career on these relationships, would say the pleasure’s been all his.
