ON-DEMAND WEBINAR
Critical Conversation: The Intersection of Race and Athletic Communications
Original date: July 15, 2020
CoSIDA's first Race & Social Justice Initiative webinar focused on answering audience questions and establishing a dialogue among the membership. In a candid, honest and wide-ranging conversation, the panelists touched on many ideas including what advantages and disadvantages they have been afforded because of their race, how to support student-athletes and provide a forum for their voices to be heard, and how to deal with lack of support. Each shared personal examples of how race has impacted their lives.
The conversation featured:
- Jessica Poole – CoSIDA Second Vice President and Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Operations and Revenue Generation, Chicago State
- Kenisha Rhone – Director of Digital Media and Social Strategy, Belmont University
- Scottie Rodgers – Director of Communications, Goodyear Cotton Bowl
- Kyle Serba – Executive Senior Associate A.D. for Strategic Communications, North Carolina Central
- DeWayne Peevy – Deputy Athletics Director, University of Kentucky, moderator
Some of the many takeaways included:
- Rhone: Get comfortable being uncomfortable. You may have been uncomfortable for the last four months but some of your colleagues have been uncomfortable for four or five decades.
- Rodgers: Find resources on your campus to help you. Nearly every campus has a diversity & inclusion office.
- Serba: You are either racist or anti-racist. Many people try to live in the middle.
- Peevy: Black people are not always comfortable or equipped to be the "voice" for all racial questions on your campus. If there is only one black person in the department, that person may be very weary of having to be the expert on everything, or always being asked to share their feelings.
- Poole: Be 1% better today than you were yesterday. No one is expecting you to become "perfect" overnight. The goal is to get better.
