The CoSIDA Executive Board of Directors has approved the merging of two committees to form the Professional Development and Education Committee and has added the Membership Recognition Committee as a new standing committee to the organization’s active leadership groups.

The new Professional Development and Education Committee is comprised of members from two former committees - the Convention Programming Committee and the Continuing Education Committee. The two committees merged to coordinate, enhance and streamline the year-round professional development and leadership strategies, activities, training, resources and content creation for the organization’s members, with a focus to educate the membership about the current challenges faced by our profession.

Under this new format, the CoSIDA Second and Third Vice-Presidents serve as Board liaisons and the chairs. The current Board liaisons/committee chairs are Jessica Poole (Chicago State, CoSIDA Second Vice President) and John Paquette (Big East Conference, CoSIDA Third Vice President.)  The committee will be led by members who are coordinators, responsible for overseeing delivery of specific professional development areas.

The Board approved the elevation of the Membership Recognition Week Committee, a part-time group which met in the summer and fall to coordinate the annual CoSIDA Membership Recognition Week, to a standing committee called the Membership Recognition Committee. This new committee will work on promoting the annual CoSIDA Recognition Week as well as identifying other opportunities to promote successes by our members on a year-round basis.

Amy Yakola, Atlantic Coast Conference Chief of External Affairs and a former Board member, will serve as chair of the committee, with Tommy Chasanoff, University of the Cumberlands Assistant AD of Sports Information, serving as vice-chair.

This committee addition brings the number of CoSIDA standing committees to 17.

“As CoSIDA continues to evolve and streamline our operations it makes sense to merge our Continuing Education and Convention Programming committees together since many of our topics, leaders, speakers and resources overlap. This new set-up will pool our talented committee members together under great leadership from CoSIDA’s second and third vice presidents and create continuity for years to come,” said CoSIDA President Sam Atkinson, Gallaudet University Associate Athletic Director for Communications.

“We are also excited about the emergence of the Membership Recognition Committee as a full-fledged CoSIDA committee. This group has done tremendous work with Membership Recognition Week these last four years. Supporting and advocating for our membership is at the forefront for CoSIDA, this committee can benefit our members, year round, sharing and promoting news and recognition our members receive on their campuses, communities and nationally.”

Over 500 members now serve on CoSIDA committees and organizational working groups in helping guide and contribute to the association’s programs and projects.

There are opportunities available to serve on several committees this summer, with these openings:

  • Advocacy Committee – 1 opening; must be from a college division school; strongly encourage people of color to consider joining
  • Diversity and Inclusion Committee – 10-15 openings; open to all CoSIDA members, regardless of division
  • Member Recognition Committee (new this year) – unlimited openings – this committee will focus on planning events around CoSIDA Membership Recognition Week in addition to recognizing members throughout the year
  • Special Awards Committee – 1 opening; prefer members from schools or conferences  in the Dakotas, Florida or Nebraska; must have 10+ years of CoSIDA experience

Committee openings will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
