Danielle Potts has been hired as CoSIDA’s first minority intern for the 2020-21 academic year. A recent graduate of the University of Kentucky and LSU, Potts will assist the CoSIDA staff with projects and programs while gaining experience and networking with its athletics communications professionals.

"CoSIDA is dedicated to helping young people of color discover the athletics communication profession and advance through professional development and networking. As part of our association’s commitment to increasing diversity, it was important to offer a staff internship that assists with that goal,” CoSIDA President Sam Atkinson said. “Danielle’s work as a student assistant in media relations will bring value to our staff. Her perspective as a young woman of color will help us view our profession and association through a different lens. We look forward to the growth both she and our staff will experience."

Potts earned a bachelor’s degree in integrated strategic communication from Kentucky in 2019 before obtaining her master’s degree in sport management from LSU earlier this year.

While at Kentucky, Potts served as an athletics media relations student intern, assisting with game-day operations and postgame press conferences for various Wildcat sporting events. She also completed multiple assignments as a student media relations intern with the Southeastern Conference, assisting with statistics and postgame press conferences at tournaments.

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to learn closely alongside creative, passionate and innovative leaders in sports information,” Potts said of her new role with CoSIDA. “I look forward to helping bring a new voice to the table through this internship.”

A native of Murray, Kentucky, Potts has been serving and will continue to work as a communications assistant in the Murray State University athletics communications office. She specializes in social media for the football, volleyball and men and women's basketball teams. In addition, Potts keeps statistics for Racer sports and produces game graphics and postgame recaps. As part of the CoSIDA staff, Potts will participate in staff and Executive Board meetings as well as assist with committees, special projects and convention planning. Her tenure on staff will include being on site for the 2021 CoSIDA Convention.

The CoSIDA staff reviewed 40 applications for the newly created position before interviewing four finalists.

“We are thrilled as a staff to welcome Danielle as CoSIDA’s first minority intern and also to utilize the opportunity to help her growth in the profession. She emerged as our first choice from a very competitive selection process and brings a variety of impressive skills to support our service to members,” CoSIDA Executive Director Doug Vance said. “The creation of this position by the CoSIDA Executive Board of Directors is another positive step forward in CoSIDA’s commitment to furthering opportunities to support diversity and inclusion in our profession.”
