Original Date: Tuesday, September 29, 2020

Co-Sponsored by CoSIDA and the National Association of Academic and Student-Athlete Development Professionals (N4A)

Three current and former student-athletes from a variety of backgrounds and divisions discussed the opportunities and challenges that come with LGBTQ+ inclusion initiatives in college athletics. From their insights, CoSIDA members, N4A members and other college athletic colleagues learned best practices for creating more welcoming environments in their departments and ways to make a difference for LGBTQ+ student-athletes on their campus. Topics covered included:

  • Biggest issues facing LGBTQ+ student-athletes today
  • Best ways for administrators, and best ways for SIDs, to approach the LBGTQ+ issues and hold conversations with student-athletes
  • How to work with administrators at a religious-based institution that doesn’t agree with same-sex marriages or is not supportive of LGBTQ+ initiatives
  • The importance of the proper use of pronouns
  • How SIDs can best help prepare an LBGTQ+ student-athlete and the media to tell their story
  • How to best advocate for your LGBTQ+ student-athletes and staff members
  • What gives LGBTQ+ student-athletes pause right now, and what give them hope and optimism?
