Shalyn Moore – Elizabeth City State University, Sports Information Director/SAAC Advisor
by Rob Knox – UNC Greensboro, Associate AD for Strategic Communications / CoSIDA Past President

“Sports has shown me that it’s about four things: Building relationships, hard work, willingness to learn, and resiliency. Every single opportunity I have had in sports was connected to a relationship I built during a previous experience. Building genuine relationships and authenticity is key.”
- Shalyn Moore, Elizabeth City State

Despite her hectic schedule, Shalyn Moore makes sure to take time for daily reflection, fitness, and personal growth. Those elements are essential for the talented and passionate Sports Information Director at NCAA Division II’s Elizabeth City State University. The HBCU institution is located in the northeastern corner of North Carolina, just west of the Outer Banks.

“I am pursuing my doctorate at Liberty University in their online philosophy of communications program with a focus on digital and strategic,” said Moore, who also serves as the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Advisor. “So far I love it. It’s a ton of work and makes my head spin occasionally but I’ve been blessed to be maintaining a 4.0 (grade point average) while developing my research dissertation and engaging with other amazing scholars and professors who challenge me to reach new heights.”

The affable Moore is always seeing how high she can soar, rarely pausing to acknowledge her accomplishments or the impact of her work. She’s driven to excel.

“I am passionate about exceeding my own expectations of myself,” Moore said. “I’ve worked hard to be in every position I am currently in. I’ve defied all kinds of odds that people don’t know about. I don’t tell my story, but I’m passionate about making sure that I write every page of it how it’s predestined to be through God, the source of my strength. His favor can never be in vain.”

In addition to interning and doing a graduate assistantship at both the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, Moore has served in a variety of communications and marketing roles. She spent time as the marketing coordinator for the Boo Williams Sportsplex, pioneering partnership efforts with Eastbay, Champs, Buffalo Wild Wings, Chick-fil-A, and other local businesses during her time there.

She also was involved in professional baseball, participating the MiLB/MLB Winter December Meetings program for three consecutive years.

During 2018-2019, Moore worked with the Washington Football Team public relations staff, making a concerted effort to do so. She would drive 3.5 hours to FedEx Field, dress in her car or at a local store just so she could arrive three hours prior to kickoff. These were usually eight to 10-hour days.

“Those experiences were definitely eye-opening and woke up a next level work-ethic in me,” Moore said. “I remember one game day that commute and responsibility really got to me. (Communications director) Zena Lewis had taken me under his wing. He taught me that I have real people that meet me, support me and immediately want me to win.”

Those words and the lesson stay with Moore.

“I truly love what I get to do,” she said. “The million different hats we wear as SID’s have their overwhelming moments, but those are truly simultaneously the defining moments that reaffirm to me that it’s what I want to do. Getting to tell the unique stories and highlight the accolades of student-athletes is priceless.

“Sports has shown me that it’s about four things: Building relationships, hard work, willingness to learn, and resiliency,” concluded Moore. “Every single opportunity I have had in sports was connected to a relationship I built during a previous experience. Building genuine relationships and authenticity is key.”

Through that relationship-building and authenticity, Moore has made a difference at Elizabeth City State.

“I significantly appreciate Shalyn Moore for her character, integrity and commitment to ECSU Athletics,” noted ECSU Athletic Director George Bright. “She brings great energy, fresh ideas and a focused expertise to our athletics leadership team. Our athletics social media engagement has been tremendous from day one with her innovative and knowledgeable approach to creative applications. I am blessed to have Shalyn Moore on my team.”
