We did it again!

#CoSIDA21, our second virtual convention, was another great success thanks to our keynote speakers, panelists, moderators, corporate partners and, of course, our members and colleagues who joined in.

Recognizing Zoom fatigue and a need for most to unplug, this year’s free programming was focused on delivering value. Organizers upped the ante with more social fun events and a dedication to recognizing the 2020 and 2021 Special Awards and Academic All-America® Hall of Fame classes.

New this year was the use of the CoSIDA Attendee Hub, which provided a central place for attendees to access our content. This format will continue for our professional development offerings throughout the 2021-22 academic year. Members were able to earn points for attending sessions, completing surveys and many other actions. Matt Turk of Cal State Northridge was the top point-earner and has won a free registration to attend the #CoSIDA22 Convention next June in Las Vegas. See below for more prizes given out during the convention.

The online event centered around 40 educational offerings including 12 featured sessions, 23 divisional day sessions and five CoSIDA U Camp sessions. Those sessions focused on:
  • Self confidence and career growth
  • Impacting the goals of your overall athletic department
  • Personal financial literacy
  • Social media with panelists from Twitter and Facebook/Instagram
  • NIL Issues with panelists from Opendorse and FanWord
  • Mental health and anxiety
  • NCAA LiveStats for football
  • Actions surrounding diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Compliance issues for communicators
  • Controlling the message and content management
  • The future of media relations, press conferences, travel and staffing
  • Public affairs: working with institutional leaders

Attendee numbers: 1,111 unique attendees participated in at least one session, with a total attendance of 5,736.

If you missed any of the live sessions, they will be on demand in the attendee hub for 90 days (through the first week of September). To watch on-demand, simply re-access the attendee hub at this link or via CoSIDA.com/2021convention. Keep in mind that if you are a current CoSIDA member you are already registered to access this programming and will simply need to go through the log-in steps of entering your name and email to receive a temporary security code. If you are non-CoSIDA member who did not register and would like to view this content, contact willroleson@cosida.com.

Recognizing our award winners from the past two years was also a priority. Written features, video interviews and photo galleries are all available at CoSIDA.com/2021SpecialAwards and CoSIDA.com/2020SpecialAwards. For our four Hall of Fame classes, special awards shows were professionally produced and are available on our CoSIDA and Academic All-America YouTube channels. These shows feature the very best of our profession and the world of sports and are worth a watch. Full length interviews including thank yous from the CoSIDA Hall of Famers are also available.

The CoSIDA Goodwill and Wellness Committee teamed up with Frontline Outreach in Orlando for its annual community service project. With the #CoSIDA21 Convention being virtual, the project was geared towards making a lasting impact on the students at Frontline Outreach for many years to come. The project helped create the Frontline SportsCenter Youth Network which is a project-based learning program that teaches students how to sportscast live games and be part of a broadcasting crew. The career-filled program infuses hands-on camera engagement, oratory skills, entrepreneurship, technological media to create content, record live events and games, and learn from informative field trips. Each eight-week program introduces students to the athletics communication field by teaching them about sports broadcasting. Monica May, an award-winning radio and television veteran in the Orlando area, will lead the instruction over each eight-week period. CoSIDA was able to raise $3,664 thanks to our generous CoSIDA member donations as well as everyone who signed up for this year’s virtual 5K. This is the 6th straight year the CoSIDA Goodwill and Wellness committee has donated $3,500 or more dollars to our charity of choice.
