CoSIDA 360 - September 2021
The SID Life
Compiled by Barb Kowal – CoSIDA Director of External Affairs & Professional Development
Would you rather write a New York Times bestseller or win an Olympic gold medal? (Spoiler! there's an author in this group). Plus, summer highlights, tips to jumpstart your fall semester, book and podcast recommendations, how we're stocking our refrigerators, and more.
“The SID Life” is a series surveying CoSIDA members for their thoughts on topics and issues in the athletic communications industry, plus personal insights into not-so-serious issues, too.

Best thing that I experienced this summer …
Awipi: my nephew's birthday party that had a turtle and iguanas
Every: Attended the Business of Small College Athletics Conference and visited the summer collegiate baseball program Wisconsin Rapids Rafters (did an internship there).
McQuiggan: I actually took vacation time. CoVID brought a heightened awareness that we can’t do our jobs to the level we want if we don’t take care of ourselves.
Pool: Seeing mentees getting their first or new jobs (shout out Nick Romei, Cody Ribaudo, Nick Vuylsteke, and Allison Houge)!
Your best tips and advice for getting the most out of the upcoming fall semester …
Awipi: Get plenty of rest and take time to talk/reconnect with people face-to-face, not through a screen.
Every: Set goals for yourself! Goals increase productivity, focus and direct motivation!
McQuiggan: Organize your inbox with folders for the different groups you interact with (coaches, senior staff, table crew, conference office, etc.) Make a concerted effort to address every email by the time you shut your laptop for the night.
Pool: Check in on each other. A quick check-in can make a big difference.
A book and/or a podcast that I recommend today ...
Awipi: "The Grand Scheme: Snatching Sinatra" with John Stamos
Every: When Pride Still Mattered (David Maraniss) about Vince Lombardi and A More Beautiful Question – The power of Inquiry to Spark Breakthrough Thoughts (Warren Berger)
McQuiggan: Finishing “Peak Performance” by Brad Stulberg and Steve Magness. It’s helped with some techniques on the only thing I’m worse at than golf: the importance of rest.
Pool: Podcast – Work Life with Adam Grant
In a parallel universe, what would you be doing today (professionally or personally)?
Awipi: Rescuing animals while having a (boring) desk job at the State Department.
Every: Scouting for a pro baseball team!
McQuiggan: Communications director in Washington, either for a member of Congress or a federal agency
Pool: I think I would still be coaching college basketball.
If we looked in your refrigerator right now, what would we see?
Awipi: Lot of leftovers in containers and a full jug of milk for coffee
Every: Celery, cashew butter, and fruit squeezes – I am a health nut!
McQuiggan: Salmon (with Old Bay seasoning) and zucchini; raspberry lime seltzers. Just moved to Wegmans territory - thrilling as I love to cook!
Pool: 45 bottles of water from storm preparation for Hurricane Henri.
What is the one thing you love to do that surprises people the most?
Awipi: Play guitar accompaniment to my old records
Every: My family does weekends at our Cabin in Wisconsin that does not have electricity or running water!
McQuiggan: Cooking. It’s the ultimate de-stressing technique for me. I’ll often listen to an audiobook (or if I need to not think, blast some music), too.
Pool: Listen to jazz. Wish I could play it.
Would you rather write a New York Times bestseller or win an Olympic gold medal?
Awipi: For sake of lasting immortality, write a bestseller
Every: Olympic Gold Medal – In 6’s court volleyball or speedskating!
McQuiggan: I’ll handle the writing and leave the gold medals to the athletes.
Pool: Since I am in the process of writing a book (more to come…), I will say NYT bestseller.
