CoSIDA Title IX Celebration — "My Title IX Story"
This June marks the 50th anniversary of Title IX. CoSIDA will celebrate this anniversary throughout 2022 with a series called “My TItle IX Story.”
by Barb Kowal – CoSIDA Director of External Affairs & Professional Development @austinbarb
Along with hundreds of organizations and groups, CoSIDA will be celebrating and honoring to 50th anniversary of Title IX this year, throughout 2022. The date of June 23, 2022, will mark the 50th anniversary of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. This historic law is arguably one of the most significant pieces of civil rights legislation in America’s history prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sex in all programs or activities in all federally funded educational institutions.
Stay tuned for CoSIDA’s celebration of Title IX — called "My Title IX Story" — with feature stories, videos, blogs, a social media campaign (#CoSIDATitleIX), plus a session on Title IX at the 2022 CoSIDA Convention in Las Vegas.
We’ll be spotlighting all those individuals who have helped the growth of women sports and CoSIDA’s female growth over the years, and much more.
We’ll kick off the Title IX celebration by linking to two content pieces putting the spotlight on long-time CoSIDA members Shelly Poe (Auburn) and Mady Salvani (Army West Point). A former CoSIDA President (2013-14), Poe is a multiple CoSIDA award recipient with induction into the CoSIDA Hall of Fame in 2006, earning the 2012 Mary Jo Haverbeck Trailblazer Award and the 2013 Arch Ward Award, all for her outstanding work and leadership.
In early January, she was honored by the Football Writers Association of America with its Lifetime Achievement Award. Here is a recent feature on Poe via WVnews.com and reporter Bob Hertzel for her trailblazing work and successes. Click here (wvnews.com)
Salvani is in her 40th year at Army West Point and a CoSIDA 25-Year and Lifetime Achievement Award recipient (2018). She, now serves as the Director of Research and Special Reports. When women's sports began at Army, she was promoted from an administrative assistant to public affairs specialist and was an important staff member as Army integrated women and women’s sports into the athletics program.
