CoSIDA Members Eclipse 50k Hours in Community Volunteerism

Huge congratulations to all CoSIDA members who helped the association reach a major milestone in volunteer service recently.

Shortly before the calendar turned to 2022, the CoSIDA Volunteer 15 program, initiated by the Goodwill and Wellness Committee in 2014-15 and designed to help promote the great efforts and success our members have in their communities, rolled over into unprecedented territory — 50,000 cumulative hours of recorded community service.

The committee, currently chaired by Megan Jameson of St. Edward’s University, encourages CoSIDA members to strive for at least 15 hours of community service each academic year. Over the past few years, the totals have gone up and up, setting new standards. Just last year, more than 11,000 hours were recorded.

As part of its annual effort to encourage members to give back to their communities, the Goodwill and Wellness Committee promotes examples of volunteer service and provides a form all members can use to record their individual contributions. Check it out at CoSIDA.com/Volunteer15. For more information, contact committee member Liz Wacienga at the University of Indianapolis.

Following is an update of other initiatives the Goodwell and Wellness Committee is promoting throughout the year.

5K Fun Run/2-Mile Walk - #CoSIDA22 and Virtual Options
CoSIDA Fitness Challenge
The CoSIDA 5K Fun Run/2-Mile Walk will be back in full swing in 2022, both at the in-person CoSIDA Convention June 26-29 in Las Vegas and virtually for those not able to be in attendance at the convention. Registration links and more information about the live and virtual options will be available beginning in February. All participants in person will receive a commemorative medal. Join your colleagues in a friendly competition that raises money for great causes Frontline Outreach in Orlando and Three Square Food Bank in Las Vegas.

New fitness challenges are introduced regularly for members to join teams, accumulate points for completing healthy activities and support each other in the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle. Stay tuned to CoSIDA.com and CoSIDA’s social media channels for the next challenge coming up soon. Join the CoSIDA Fitness Challenge Facebook group here.

For more information on these initiatives, contact committee member Jeremy Rosenthal of Indiana University.

Nutrition on Slack
The newest initiative from the committee — tips, tricks and strategies for healthy eating — will be shared via the #health-wellbeing Slack channel. If you aren’t a member of the CoSIDA Slack community, use this link to join. If you’re already in the community, search for the #health-wellbeing channel and join! All members are encouraged to share healthy recipes and strategies for living and eating healthy. If you have questions, reach out to committee member Jenna Willhoit at the University of Dayton.

Mental Health/Disabilities/Cancer Survivors
The Goodwill and Wellness Committee became stronger this year and expanded its reach with the addition of a group of members who formed to advocate for members facing mental health issues, those with different abilities and cancer survivors. Led by A.J. O’Hagan of Yeshiva University, this passionate group of members will work as part of the committee to promote programming and activities around these focus areas.

Be sure to check out member features as part of Communicators Outside the Lines and stay tuned for more information about CoSIDA’s community service project in Las Vegas during #CoSIDA22 on CoSIDA.com.
