The three interviewed CSC members, all leaders in the Diversity & Inclusion Committee and who are facilitating the D&I Fellowship program are:

Danielle Percival – Piedmont University, Assistant Athletic Director of Communications
Scottie Rodgers – Goodyear Cotton Bowl, Director of Communications
Denise Thompson – University of Delware, Associate AD, Communications, Creative Services, and Multimedia

Calling the trio “an all-star panel to talk about DEI messaging,” Fisher led the discussion and asked the following questions:

0:45 – Broad overview of the CSC Racial and Social Justice Initiatives and the D&I Fellowship Class and program, in partnership with the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics

2:33 – The intentions of CSC leadership on building the Fellowship program, empowering communicators to make an impact in their individual schools/conferences and how we are building the next set of communications leaders in college athletics

4:50 – Being intentional about building champions of diversity through our DEI programming and the strategies being used and how to measure the effectiveness of CSC’s DEI work

8:00 – How are we measuring the effectiveness of DEI programming and connecting to our student-athletes via DEI issues, and how to encourage them to consider careers in college athletics

10:42 – Working at the bowl association (Scottie Rodgers) and how to interact with student-athlete participants and what the messaging is to them, taking their love of sports and parlaying that into a career in college sports

12:25 – Misconception associated with DEI messaging: It’s not true that if you do not hold a major title or job role, that you cannot contribute your ideas or content to DEI messaging

14:00 – How to extend your content into deeper connections and engagement (vs. just posting graphics to celebrate a special day, a DEI issue)

16:25 – Messaging that appears to be working/not working; and, are their conversations in the industry that still are not happening, and if so, why? The importance of telling your own unique stories.

20:05 – How can we rely on other campus units to help deliver these messages and collaborate with them?

23:15 – Each participant talks about what’s been the most rewarding part of the DEI journey and programming for them.
