#CoSIDA22 Convention returns live and in-person June 26-29

by Will Roleson – CoSIDA Associate Executive Director  @d_legos_ATU

A new evening awards event — 2022 CoSIDA Celebrations: An All-Star Night of Honors presented by ESPN — highlights the association’s first in-person convention in three years June 26-29 at Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas.

The gala will be held on Monday, June 27, and will feature the induction of the CoSIDA Hall of Fame Class of 2022 as well as the Warren Berg, Arch Ward, Jake Wade and Keith Jackson Awards and Lifetime Achievement Award recipients. It will be preceded by appetizers and bar service.

Highlighting the first day of the convention on Sunday, June 26, is the All-In Welcome Reception in the Exhibit Hall beginning at 5:00 PM (PT). Attendees will have the opportunity to visit exhibits, enjoy food and beverages, play oversized games and participate in a video game tournament.

Early-bird convention registration fees (through April 8) are $350 for members, $450 for non-members and $200 for undergraduate student members, which are the same rates that were planned for the 2020 convention in Las Vegas that was canceled due to the pandemic.

Rooms remain available in CoSIDA’s block as of April 4. Rates start at only $165 at Mandalay Bay and $195 at Delano.

“I can’t think of a more exciting place for our 2022 Convention than Las Vegas and the Mandalay Bay Resort,” said 2021-22 CoSIDA President Cindy Potter of Columbia College (Mo.). “The chance to see everyone again in person will be an unforgettable experience and Mandalay Bay is the perfect place to make this happen.

“As the weeks seem to be flying by, my excitement is growing to once again be together. It’s been a long three years away and the Executive Board of Directors and CoSIDA staff has been working tirelessly to prepare the best family reunion we’ve ever had! I hope you will join us for this historic convention!”

With the move of the CoSIDA Hall of Fame ceremony to an evening, the annual Academic All-America Hall of Fame (link to:TBD if available in time for publication or just to academicallamerica.com) will move to a luncheon on Tuesday, June 28.

"We're excited to host the 2022 Academic All-America Hall of Fame in person when we get together in Las Vegas for the first time since 2019. This ceremony is a marquee event that highlights many of outstanding Academic All-Americans over the years as well as our Dick Enberg Award winner,” said Mark Fleming, chair of the Academic All-America Hall of Fame Committee and Director of Athletic Communications at Moravian University. “We're looking forward to having the event as a luncheon as we hope more of our members can enjoy the ceremony and in turn nominate deserving former Academic All-Americans from their institutions in the future."

CoSIDA’s other award winners will be honored at the CoSIDA Special Awards Luncheon on Wednesday, June 29.

Educational programming will kick off on Sunday, June 26, at noon. Topics planned include:

  • AD/Commissioners Roundtable
  • Writing For 2022 and Beyond: Cut Through The Clutter

“We’re very excited about our convention programming for Las Vegas. We’ve scaled back the number of sessions this year and our focus is to have sessions that will be pertinent for large groups and sessions that will be tailored for more specific audiences,” said John Paquette, CoSIDA 3rd Vice President and co-chair of the Continuing Education Committee. “The educational lounges, our small, intensive learning labs for small groups, will continue. We have some expert speakers and panelists on the schedule. Our goal is always to promote personal and professional growth.”

The always-popular Divisional Day will be held on Tuesday, June 28, with dedicated programming for NCAA Division I, Division II, Division III, NAIA, CANSIDA, two-year and community colleges, and conference offices.

Additional programming details will be added as they become available on the convention schedule.

5K Fun Run / 2-Mile Walk & Community Service Project

After two years in a virtual-only format, the CoSIDA 5k Fun Run / 2-Mile Walk will be held in-person on Monday, June 27, at 7 am PDT on the pool path at Mandalay Bay. A virtual option is also available for entrants to run between June 19-30. Details and cost options are available here.

The Goodwill & Wellness Committee’s annual community service project will also return, with attendees encouraged to volunteer to pack hygiene kits for homeless people in southern Nevada on Sunday afternoon, June 26, in support of of Three Square Food Bank.

“We are excited to welcome people back to the convention in Las Vegas this summer. We encourage people to sign up for our in-person charity 5K or you can also sign up and participate virtually. We are supporting a great cause in Three Square Food Bank and will also have an onsite community service project,” said Jeremy Rosenthal, chair of the committee and assistant director of strategic communications at Indiana University. “The CoSIDA membership has made a big difference raising over $30,000 the last 10 years and we have been able to make a positive impact on the lives of countless people because of that generosity and support.”
