CoSIDA Announces 2022-23 Scholarship and Grants Award Recipients
by Brian Laubscher – Washington and Lee University Sports Information Director
Chair of the CoSIDA Scholarship Committee
The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced its class of scholarship and grant winners for the 2022-23 academic year on June 1.
CoSIDA Scholarship Committee members chose a pair of $6,000 postgraduate scholarship recipients, two more $2,000 undergraduate scholarship winners, two renewable $1,000 scholarship winners among the children of CoSIDA members, and selected two schools to receive $15,000 graduate internship grants.
The CoSIDA Postgraduate Scholarships have been awarded since the program began in 1981. The Wylie Smith Scholarship and the Langston Rogers Scholarship are named in honor of outstanding professionals in the athletics communications industry.
This year’s recipient of the Langston Rogers Scholarship is Amanda Scott of Lander University, while Grant Cook of Grace College will receive the Wylie Smith Scholarship.
Scott is a 2015 graduate of William Paterson University with a bachelor of arts in communications and a 2018 graduate of Arkansas State University with a master of science in sport administration. She is currently working towards another master’s degree in business administration from Lander University, where she also serves as a graduate assistant in the sports information office. She currently works as the primary contact for women’s tennis, women’s golf, acrobatics and tumbling and women’s rugby. Her work experience also includes internships with the New Jersey Jackals baseball team and with the Ripkin Experience in Pigeon Forge, Tenn.
Cook graduated in May from Grace College with a bachelor of science in sport management. He intends to remain at Grace as a graduate assistant in the sports information office, pursuing a master’s degree in athletic administration. Cook began as a student assistant in the sports information office at Grace in 2018, honing the skills that allowed him to serve as the primary contact for the women’s basketball team during his senior year. Since 2020, he has also been a statistician with The Scorer’s Table, helping provide statistical services for a number of colleges. Cook is active in the community, volunteering with youth groups and his local YMCA.
The CoSIDA Undergraduate Scholarships have been presented every year since 1999 and two of the scholarships are also named for outstanding professionals in the field, Fred Neusch and Dave Wohlhueter.
The 2022-23 recipients of the CoSIDA Undergraduate Scholarships are Maddie Peterson of the University of Nebraska and Anna Fox of the North Central College.
Peterson expects to graduate from the University of Nebraska in December 2022 with a degree in sports media and communication, advertising and public relations. She served as a sports reporter with the Daily Nebraskan during the 2019-20 school year and eventually began working in the athletic communications office in the spring of 2021. She is currently the communications contact for the Huskers’ swimming & diving and men’s golf teams.
Fox is a junior at North Central College, where she expects to graduate in May of 2023 with a degree in sports management. She is a member of the school’s varsity tennis team and she began working with the school’s sports information department in the spring of 2021. She is also a Youth Enrichment Instructor with the YMCA of Chicago, a camp counselor and kids’ zone leader for the Geneva Park District and a diet aide at Covenant Living at The Holmstad in Geneva, Ill.
To be eligible for either the Postgraduate or Undergraduate Scholarships, candidates must maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average and express an interest in pursuing a career in sports information.
The Phil Langan Graduate Internships were also introduced in 1999 as a way to assist understaffed offices and provide opportunity for those wishing to break into the field. It is a one-year grant of $15,000 to hire a graduate intern. The 2022-23 school year will see the University of Northern Iowa and Cornerstone University receive the $15,000 grant to assist the efforts of two talented professionals.
Michelle Van Dorn has served as the assistant athletic director for communications at the University of Northern Iowa since 2021. In this role, she supervises one full-time employee and a part-time graduate assistant in support of the school’s 17-sport Division I athletic program. She arrived at UNI in 2012 and has worked in a number of roles over that time, including new media coordinator and social media coordinator in the university relations office.
Jesse Campbell is in his third year as the assistant athletic director for communications and marketing at Cornerstone University. He is the lone full-time staff member in charge of supporting the communications efforts for the school’s 20-sport NAIA athletic program. Campbell is a 2016 graduate of Cornerstone and he is currently pursuing an MBA.
The CoSIDA Member-Child Scholarships constitute the organization’s newest scholarship program, assisting with educational funding for children of CoSIDA members. The program began in 2014 and is a $1,000 award that is renewable for up to four academic years given that the recipients meet the basic qualifications of the award.
This year’s recipients are Haylee Stancil and Shelby Kindhart.
Haylee Stancil is the daughter of Jay Stancil, the director of strategic sports communications at Union College (Ky.) and the 2022 CoSIDA Warren Berg Award recipient. Haylee will attend Lincoln Memorial University (Tenn.) where she intends on majoring in nursing. She graduated from Corbin High School where she was a member of the soccer and track teams. She was also president of the Health Occupations Students of America and a member of the National Honors Society and student council.
Shelby Kindhart is the daughter of Rick Kindhart, the assistant director of athletics for communications at Missouri State University. Shelby will attend Missouri State after graduating from Springfield Catholic High School. She was a member of the varsity softball team, serving as a team captain and earning all-conference honors. In the National Honors Society, she has been involved with a variety of clubs including Rotary, UNICEF, French Club, Multicultural Club, National Art Honor Society, and National English Honor Society.
The CoSIDA Scholarships and Grants program will award over $50,000 in scholarship and grant money to its members for the 2022-23 school year. Application deadlines are in April and the recipients are selected every May. For more information about the program and how you may benefit, please visit the Awards & Contests link on CoSIDA.com.
