TOWSON, Md. – Senior defender Kristi Andreassen of Northern Arizona University and senior goalkeeper Tara Carter of undefeated Otterbein University headline the 2010 ESPN Academic All-America® Women’s Soccer Teams as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Andreassen has been named as the Academic All-America® of the Year for the University Division while Carter has been chosen as the Academic All-America® of the Year for the College Division.
An exercise science major with a 4.00 grade point average (G.P.A.), Andreassen led Northern Arizona to a 12-4-3 record and a second place finish in the Big Sky Conference Tournament in 2010. A second team ESPN Academic All-America® selection last year, she was named first team All-Big Sky three years in a row. As a senior, Andreassen started all 19 games and led the Lumberjacks in scoring with six goals and three assists. A native of Tempe, Arizona, she was the Big Sky Defensive Most Valuable Player in 2010.
A three-time member of the Big Sky All-Academic team, she logged more than 110 hours of volunteer work in 2009, working in physical therapy clinics in Flagstaff and Phoenix.
An art major with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A., Carter has led third-ranked Otterbein to a 20-0-1 record and a berth in the NCAA Division III quarter-finals. Otterbein will face fourth-ranked Loras College in the NCAA quarter-finals this weekend after posting a 1-0 win over Calvin and a 2-0 victory over Washington-St. Louis in the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament.
Carter has been the defensive leader of a team that has allowed only three goals in 21 matches this season. The Cardinals have outscored their opponents by a 47-3 margin. With a 0.14 goals against average, Carter is ranked third in NCAA Division III. A first team All-Ohio Athletic Conference goalkeeper for the second year in a row, Carter leads NCAA Division III leader with 18 shutouts. She holds the school record and the OAC record with 46 career shutouts.
A native of Pickerington, Ohio, Carter has recorded 10 straight shutouts and led Otterbein to its fourth straight OAC title. A member of Phi Eta Sigma and Torch & Key honor societies, she recently completed a sculpture to honor recent Otterbein President C. Brent DeVore.
Carter was joined on the 2010 ESPN Academic All-America® first team by one of her teammates - Otterbein senior defender Jenny Knox.
ESPN Academic All-America® University Division honors
The 11 first team members of the ESPN Academic All-America® University Division team have an average G.P.A. of 3.87. Three honorees have perfect 4.0 G.P.A.’s
Senior defender Jessica Tsao of Portland was the only repeat selection on the ESPN Academic All-America® Women’s Soccer University Division first team. Along with Andreassen, Notre Dame senior defender Lauren Fowlkes moved up to the first team after earning second team honors in 2009.
Senior Dana Bergstrom of Hofstra rounded out the first team defense while Mollie Patton, a graduate student from South Carolina, was named as the goalkeeper on the first team. Seniors Jennifer Harvey of Virginia and Tiffany Yovino of Hofstra join junior Katy Frierson of Auburn to comprise the first team midfield.
At the forward positions, seniors Molly Kinsella of Vanderbilt and Christen Press of Stanford were honored, along with junior Krista Lopez of Oklahoma State.
The only repeat selection on the ESPN Academic All-America® University Division first team, Tsao was a four-year starter on defense for Portland. She is a biology major, holding a 3.97 G.P.A. Named as the West Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Year, Tsao led the Pilots to the number one seed in the NCAA West region. The Pilots, who won their fourth straight WCC championship, finished the season with an 18-1-2 record and were eliminated on penalty kicks by Washington in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Portland, Oregon native keyed a defense that allowed only 12 goals in 21 matches.
A second team ESPN Academic All-America® selection last year, Fowlkes has led Notre Dame to a 17-2-2 record and a berth in the NCAA College Cup quarter-finals. A second team All-BIG EAST selection as a senior, she was a third team NSCAA All-American last year. In a 4-0 NCAA College Cup win over Southern California, she scored a goal with two assists. In 2009, she was named as the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year. A native of Lee’s Summit, Mo., Fowlkes is a science-business major with a 3.66 G.P.A.
Hofstra (19-3-0), ranked No. 23 nationally, is the only school with more than one representative on the ESPN Academic All-America University Division first team. Bergstrom and Yovino earned first team notice after leading the Pride to the best record in school history. Hofstra advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
An exercise science major with a 4.00 G.P.A., Bergstrom scored one goal with 10 assists. A second team All-Colonial Athletic Association selection, she led Hofstra to a perfect 11-0 record in the CAA regular season. The Billerica, Massachusetts native was a key defensive performer for a team that allowed fewer than three shots per game.
The 2010 CAA Player of the Year, Yovino is a history/early childhood education major with a 3.74 G.P.A. A native of Holtsville, New York, Yovino tied for the team lead with 12 goals and two assists. A four-time All-CAA pick, she scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Connecticut in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. She finished her career with 21 goals and eight assists.
A graduate student pursuing a degree as Doctor of Pharmacy, Patton graduated from South Carolina with a degree in exercise science and a 3.80 G.P.A. In 2010, she allowed 0.74 goals per game and posted nine shutouts. A starter in all 25 games, Patton helped the Gamecocks to a 15-6-4 record and a berth in the second round of the NCAA College Cup. A native of Milford, Ohio, she set a school record and a Southeastern Conference record with 15 shutouts last year.
A chemistry major with a 3.96 G.P.A., Harvey led Virginia Tech to a 10-10-1 record and a berth in the NCAA College Cup. She tied for the team lead with six goals and finished her career with 19 goals and eight assists. A native of Roanoke, Virginia, she started every game in her four-year career.
A first team All-Southeastern Conference selection for the third year in a row, Frierson led Auburn to an 11-8-2 record and a berth in the NCAA College Cup. A political science major with a 3.91 G.P.A., the Homewood, Alabama native scored eight goals with 12 assists in 2010. She was the SEC leader in assists. Named as the SEC Freshman of the Year, Frierson has scored 22 goals in her career with 29 assists.
A first team NSCAA All-America forward, Press is the leading scorer for Stanford with 23 goals and seven assists. The all-time leading scorer in school history with 68 goals, she has led the Cardinal to a 20-0-2 record and a berth in the NCAA College Cup quarter-finals. A communications major with a 3.61 G.P.A., Press was the National Co-Player of the Year, as chosen by TopDrawerSoccer.com in 2009. She is a native of Palos Verdes Estates, California.
A molecular and cellular biology major with a 3.89 G.P.A., Kinsella led Vanderbilt to an 8-10-2 record as a senior. A second team All-Southeastern Conference pick, she was named as the SEC Scholar-Athlete for women’s soccer. A native of Memphis, Tennessee, she scored five goals with six assists in 2010.
A junior with a double major of management and accounting and a 4.00 G.P.A., Lopez is the top scorer for Oklahoma State, the Big 12 Conference champion. A first team All-Big 12 selection, she has 14 goals with four assists while leading the #6 Cowgirls to a 19-3-1 record and the quarter-final round of the College Cup. A native of Carrollton, Texas, she ranks among the top 20 scorers in the nation.
ESPN Academic All-America® College Division honors
The 12 members of the ESPN Academic All-America® College Division first team have an average G.P.A. of 3.91. Three first team selections have perfect 4.0 G.P.A.’s.
Led by Carter, the ESPN Academic All-America® College Division first team has four repeat selections. Carter and Knox were chosen to the first team for the second year in a row.
In addition, senior defenders Jessica Bennett of West Chester and Jennifer Paulucci of Johns Hopkins were also repeat selections to the first team.
A second team selection in 2009, senior forward Jess Babice of Rowan was named to the first team while senior defender Kelly Guerin of Saint Rose earned first team honors after making the third team last season.
There were two sets of teammates on the ESPN Academic All-America® College Division first team. In addition to Carter and Knox of Otterbein, junior midfield Christina Cuffari of Saint Rose joins Guerin on the first team. Senior Lauren Hernley of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, senior Elaine Schnabel of Calvin and junior Katy Wendt of Wartburg were also named as first team selections on the midfield.
Senior Jazmine Farrell of Centenary and Amy Kuykendall of Hardin-Simmons join Babice as forwards on the first team.
An allied heath major with a 4.00 G.P.A., Knox has been a four-year starter on defense for the Cardinals. A starter in 85 career games, she was a first team NSCAA All-American as a junior. Named All-OAC for the third straight season, she was honored as the OAC Defender of the Year for the second year in a row. A native of Gehanna, Ohio, Knox has scored 15 goals in her career with seven assists. A key performer on a defense that has allowed only three goals in 21 matches, she was the winner of the Sheila Murphy Book Award, presented to the member of the Alpha Lambda Delta honors society with the highest G.P.A.
A four-time All-Centennial Conference first team defender at Johns Hopkins, Paulucci is a biomedical engineering major with a 3.96 G.P.A. She has led Hopkins to an 18-3-1 record and a berth in the NCAA Division III quarter-finals. A native of Manalapan, N.J. she has been a key to a Blue Jay defense that has allowed 14 goals in 22 games with 12 shutouts. In her career, she has been part of 54 shutouts. In 2008, she was named as an NSCAA first team All-American.
A two-time selection as a first team All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference selection, Bennett is an elementary education major with a 4.00 G.P.A. As a senior, she has led fourth-ranked West Chester to an 18-1 record and a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament. A starter in all 21 games, Bennett has scored six goals and three assists. A native of Littlestown, Pennsylvania, Bennett has been a key to a defense that has posted 17 shutouts while allowing nine goals in 21 games.
A biology major with a 3.92 G.P.A., Guerin has led number one-ranked Saint Rose to a perfect 22-0 record and a berth in the NCAA Division II quarter-finals. A two-time All-Northeast Conference first team selection, she earned first team NSCAA All-America honors last season. While scoring one goal with two assists, the Sutton, Massachusetts native has been a key member of a defense that has allowed six goals in 22 matches and posted 16 shutouts.
The leading scorer for top-ranked Saint Rose, Cuffari has 10 goals and 14 assists. A second team All-Northeast-10 Conference selection, Cuffari is a business administration major with a 3.70 G.P.A. One of the leading scorers in the NE-10, she is the conference leader in assists. A native of Brick, N.J., she is a key to one of the top offensive teams in NCAA Division II.
A mechanical engineering major with a 3.76 G.P.A., Hernley led Massachusetts Institute of Technology to a 13-3-3 record as a senior. Honored as the NEWMAC Player of the Year for the second straight season, she scored 11 goals with three assists in 2010. A two-year captain, Hernley is also a member of MIT’s swimming and diving team. The Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania native is a member of Pi Tau Sigma, the international mechanical engineering honor society.
A three-year starter in the midfield at Calvin, Schnabel is an English major with a 3.94 G.P.A. A senior captain for the Knights, she helped them win three straight Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association championships. As a senior, she scored two goals with six assists, leading the nationally-ranked Knights to an NCAA Tournament berth. A native of Chesterton, Indiana, she finished her career with 17 goals and 14 assists.
The leading scorer in the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with 15 goals and nine assists, Wendt led Wartburg to a 14-6-2 record in 2010. A psychology major with a 3.99 G.P.A., she has minors in English and Spanish. A three-time All-IIAC first team selection, the Bettendorf, Iowa native has scored 29 goals with 19 assists in her college career.
Named as the New Jersey Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year in 2009 and 2010, Babice led Rowan to a 16-3-2 record while scoring 21 goals with 12 assists. A three-time first team All-NJAC selection, Babice has a double major of health and exercise science, along with special education. She also has a 3.74 G.P.A. The third-leading scorer in NCAA Division III, the Groveville, N.J. native owns the Rowan career scoring records with 57 goals and 138 points.
A mathematics major with a 3.97 G.P.A., Farrell was the leading scorer for Centenary College and led the Cyclones to their first-ever NCAA Division III Tournament. A native of Newton, N.J., she led the Colonial States Athletic Conference in scoring with 22 goals and nine assists. A first team All-CSAC selection, she was named as CSAC Player of the Week three times as a senior.
The leading scorer for undefeated Hardin-Simmons, Kuykendall has led the Cowgirls to a 20-0-0 record and a berth in the NCAA Division III quarter-finals. An accounting major with a 3.98 G.P.A., she ranks among the national leaders with 27 goals and seven assists. Named first team All-American Southwest Conference three times, she owns the Cowgirls’ career scoring records with 75 goals and 181 points. The Weatherford, Texas native also owns the ASC career scoring records.
CoSIDA's ESPN Academic All-America® program
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 15,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
The ESPN Academic All-America® program currently selects 12 teams at the University Division level and 12 teams at the College Division level. The program currently selects the following Academic All-America® teams: men's and women's soccer, volleyball, football, men's and women's basketball, baseball, softball, men's cross country and track, women's cross country and track, men's at-large and women's at-large.
