TOWSON, Md. – Senior Alix Klineman of number two-ranked Stanford University and senior Brittany Donelan of Heidelberg University headline the 2010 ESPN Academic All-America® Volleyball Teams as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Klineman, an outside hitter, has been named as the Academic All-America® of the Year for the
University Division while Donelan, a libero, has been chosen as the Academic All-America® of the Year for the College Division.
An art major with a minor in political science and a 3.53 grade point average (GPA),
Klineman has been named as an All-American by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) three times. The senior outside hitter has played in all 27 matches for fourth-ranked Stanford while leading the Pacific-10 Conference co-champions to a 24-3 record. Stanford is seeded third in the NCAA Tournament which starts on Thursday, December 2.
Named as a 2009 ESPN Academic All-America® second team pick, Klineman is second in NCAA Division I with 5.47 kills per set. She also ranks among the national leaders with 6.2 points per set. With a team high .364 hitting percentage, she averages 0.66 blocks and 2.87 digs per set. A native of Manhattan Beach, Cal., Klineman led Stanford to back-to-back NCAA Final Four appearances in 2007 and 2008 when the Cardinal finished as national runner-up each time. She was also named to the all-tournament team at the Final Four twice.
Named as the AVCA National Player of the Week twice, she is a three-time All-Pacific 10 Conference pick and the eighth player in school history with 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in her career.
Honored as a third team All-American selection by the AVCA as a junior and senior,
Donelan has a
double major in accounting and business administration with a 3.96 GPA. Named as the Ohio Athletic Conference Libero of the Year for the third straight season, she averaged 5.60 digs per set. A first team All-OAC selection in 2010, she was a second team All-OAC pick as a sophomore and junior.
A four-year starter for “The ‘Berg,” Donelan led Heidelberg to four consecutive NCAA Division III regional appearances. As a senior, the North Olmstead, Ohio native led Heidelberg to the best season in school history.
In 2010, Heidelberg finished the season with a 33-6 record, setting a school record for victories in a season. “The ‘Berg” also won the OAC regular season and tournament championships. The top seed at the NCAA Great Lakes regional, Heidelberg was upset by eventual national champion Calvin in the second round of the tournament.
Donelan finished her career with 2,687 digs, setting Heidelberg and OAC records. Named to the OAC All-Academic team, she helped Heidelberg earn a final number 15 national ranking in 2010. During her career, she led “The ‘Berg” to a 118-33 record, including a 32-4 mark in OAC play.
University Division Academic All-America® Team
The six members of the 2010 ESPN Academic All-America® University Division first team have an average GPA of 3.78.
Klineman is one of two Stanford players named to the 2010 ESPN Academic All-America® Volleyball University Division first team.
Cardinal senior setter Cassidy Lichtman is also part of the first team.
Senior Cailtin Saxton of Rutgers, a 2009 third team ESPN Academic All-America® University Division selection, has also been chosen to the first team along with
seniors Johannah Bangert of Illinois, Allyson Doyle of Western Michigan and Nikki Fowler of Tennessee.
Four members of the 2010 ESPN Academic All-America® Volleyball University Division first team will play in the NCAA Division I Tournament which starts this weekend.
A political science major with a 3.63 GPA,
Lichtman has been a standout at setter for Stanford. First team AVCA All-American as a junior, she is averaging 8.29 assists per set. A native of Poway, Cal., Lichtman has 42 “double doubles” in her career as well as 11 “triple doubles.” As a senior, she is third on the team with 0.62 blocks per set and averages 2.44 digs per set. A first team All-Pac-10 pick last year, Litchtman will finish her career ranked among Stanford’s career leaders in assists.
A three-year standout at Rutgers,
Saxton is a journalism and media studies major with a minor in sociology who carries a perfect 4.0 GPA. The team leader in kills for the last three seasons, she averaged 3.0 kills per set as a senior. A starter in all 28 matches, Saxton helped the Scarlet Knights post an 11-17 record. Saxton, who was a team captain as a junior and senior, was second on the team in digs (2.47 per game) and service aces (36) in 2010. Named to the BIG EAST All-Academic team twice, she is a native of Encinitas, Cal. who transferred to Rutgers after one year at California Santa Barbara.
The career leader in blocks for Illinois,
Bangert has led the #10 Fighting Illini to a 22-8 record and second place in the Big Ten Conference. A mathematics major with a 3.72 GPA, she has a .367 hitting percentage with 1.79 kills per set. The two-time NCAA leader in blocks, Bangert is averaging 1.23 blocks per set this year to rank among the NCAA leaders. An honorable mention All-American in 2009, she was named to the 2010 Pre-Season All-Big Ten team. The Washington, Mo. native has 744 career blocks. Eighth-seeded Illinois opens play in the NCAA Tournament this weekend.
A speech pathology major with a perfect 4.00 GPA,
Doyle was a second team All-Mid-American Conference choice after leading Western Michigan to a 22-10 record and third place in the MAC. A four-year starter at outside hitter, she was a first team All-MAC pick in 2009. Averaging 2.38 kills per set in 2010, Doyle is the 15th Bronco with more than 1,000 career kills (1,188). As a senior, she had a .279 hitting percentage and was second on the team with 3.83 digs per set. A Battle Creek, Mich. native, Doyle was a member of the Broncos’ NCAA Tournament team in 2008.
A three-time All-Southeastern Conference pick,
Fowler is a marketing major with a minor in international business who has a 3.80 GPA. One of the top players in Tennessee history, she led the 21st-ranked Lady Vols to a 24-6 regular season record and a NCAA Tournament berth. A native of Dallas, Texas, Fowler is a two-time honorable mention All-American. As a senior, she leads the Lady Vols with 3.52 kills per set and a .301 hitting percentage. Honored as the 2010 SEC’s Co-Scholar-Athlete of the Year, she also averages 2.96 digs per game, one of the top marks on the team. Fowler will finish her career ranked among Tennessee’s all-time leaders in kills, attacks, blocks and digs. The 11th-seeded Lady Vols open play in the NCAA Tournament this weekend.
Senior Elizabeth Fleming of Marshall, a repeat selection on the ESPN Academic All-America® University Division second team, is one of six seniors on the 2010 second team. Fleming is joined by
Nina Camaioni of Loyola (Md.), JuliAnne Chisholm of Kansas State, Holly Evans of Morehead State, Amanda Graham of Robert Morris and JennaRae Jester of Wyoming on the second team.
Another scholar-athlete from fourth-ranked Stanford,
Cardinal junior Stephanie Browne, heads the third team. She is joined on the ESPN Academic All-America® University Division third team by
junior Suzy Boulavsky of Oklahoma, sophomore Katherine Fischer of Oregon, junior Kristin Hoffman of Northern Illinois and senior Kelly Williamson of New Mexico.
College Division Academic All-America® Team
Senior Jennifer Hefner of Wayne State (Neb.) is the only repeat selection on the ESPN Academic All-America® College Division Volleyball first team. Three of the six members of the ESPN Academic All-America® Volleyball College Division first team have perfect 4.00 GPA’s. The average GPA of the first team selections is 3.96.
Hefner is joined on the first team by
junior Tricia McCutchan of Case Western Reserve and senior Devon Woolard of Lynn, a pair of second team honorees in 2009.
Junior Maria Horning of Eastern and
senior Steph Strauss of Juniata round out the ESPN Academic All-America® College Division Volleyball first team.
Hefner, a first team Academic All-America® pick as a junior, majors in applied human and sport physiology with a 3.93 GPA. A three-time All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference first team selection, she was named as a second team All-American by the AVCA as a junior. In 2010, Hefner led fourth-ranked Wayne State (Neb.) to an NCAA Division II Tournament berth where the Wildcats were upset in the first round. A native of Archer, Neb., Hefner finished her career with 1,540 kills, ranked fourth in school history. Hefner, who averaged 3.38 kills and 1.13 blocks per set in 2010, led the Wildcats to a 102-34 in her career with four NCAA Tournament appearances.
One of two juniors on the ESPN Academic All-America® Volleyball College Division first team,
McCutchan was a second team selection last year. A biomedical engineering major with a 4.00 GPA., she earned second team All-University Athletic Association honors for the third year in a row. While leading the Spartans to a 24-10 record and the first NCAA Division III regional appearance in school history, McCutchan averaged 3.81 kills per set to lead the team. A native of Hamilton, Ohio, McCutchan had a .282 hitting percentage while leading the team with 0.98 blocks per set. Honored as the UAA Player of the Week four times, she already stands second on CWU’s all-time list of kill leaders.
A business administration major with a perfect 4.00 GPA,
Woolard was also a second team honoree on the ESPN Academic All-America® Volleyball College Division team in 2009. A four-year starter at setter for Lynn University, she earned All-South region notice this past year. The three-time All-Sunshine State Conference second team selection led the Fighting Knights to a 21-10 record and an NCAA Division II Tournament berth. As a senior, Woolard averaged 9.79 assists and 2.55 digs per set. A native of Delray Beach, Fla., Woolard became only the second player in school history with more than 1,000 assists and 1,000 digs. She set a school record with 4,564 career assists and her 1,174 career digs are fourth on the all-time list.
Honored as a first team NCAA Division III All-American setter,
Horning led eighth-ranked Eastern University to a 30-5 record. An economic development major with a perfect 4.00 GPA, she also minors in accounting and Spanish. Named as the Freedom Conference Player of the Year for the third consecutive season, Horning ranked fourth in the nation with 11.5 assists per set for the Eagles. A native of Denver, Pa., she also averaged 1.1 kills per set with a .322 hitting percentage and 3.0 digs per set. Chosen by the faculty as the winner of the University’s Social Science Award, Horning has led Eastern to a 97-12 record and three NCAA Tournament berths in her career.
A sport marketing and management major with a minor in communications who carries a 3.89 GPA,
Strauss led third-ranked Juniata College to a 34-6 record and berth in the NCAA Division III semi-finals this past season. Honored as a Division III second team All-American by the AVCA for the third straight year, Strauss averaged 9.94 assists per set for the Eagles. She also averaged 1.88 kills and 2.13 digs per set.
A two-time team captain, Strauss earned all-tournament honors at the NCAA Division III Championships in 2009 while leading the Eagles to a national runner-up finish. Named to the All-Landmark Conference team three times in her career, she helped Juniata post a 142-20 record with four NCAA Tournament appearances during her career. A native of Verona, Pa., Strauss is a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa leadership society.
Woolard is one of two members of Lynn to earn ESPN Academic All-America® Volleyball College Division honors.
Senior Kala Abdell of Lynn was named to the second team.
Junior Cara Carson of Southwest Minnesota State, senior Kendra Coulson of Texas Woman’s University, junior Mollie Lacy of Washburn, senior Sarah Stephens of Frostburg State and senior Lisa Shilling of Fresno Pacific were also named to the ESPN Academic All-America® Volleyball College Division second team.
Seniors Jessica Anderson of U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Madison Chylik of Thiel, Stormi Gale of Wingate, Jackie Hamilton of Redlands and Hilary Pavels of Adelphi are joined on the ESPN Academic All-America® Volleyball College Division third team by
junior Karie Altman of Madonna.
CoSIDA's ESPN Academic All-America® program
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 15,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
The ESPN Academic All-America® program currently selects 12 teams at the University Division level and 12 teams at the College Division level. The program currently selects the following Academic All-America® teams: men's and women's soccer, volleyball, football, men's and women's basketball, baseball, softball, men's cross country and track, women's cross country and track, men's at-large and women's at-large.
