The 2011 Capital One Academic All-America men's and women's soccer teams are being announced this week (Monday-Thursday,, Nov. 28-Dec. 1). This year, with the expansion of the Capital One program from two teams (University and College Divisions) to four teams (Division I, Division II, Division III and College Divisions), one divisional team per day will be announced.

TOWSON, Md. – Men's soccer standout and junior forward Liam Barrett of Illinois Institute of Technology and women's soccer star and senior forward Jamie Achten of Lee University lead the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America® Col
lege Division Men’s and Women’s Soccer Teams as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The College Division Academic All-America® soccer teams are comprised of student-athletes from NAIA, Canadian and two-year institutions.
Barrett and Achten have been chosen as the winners of the Academic All-America® of the Year award for the men’s and women’s soccer teams, respectively.
Barrett, a junior from Felixstowe, England, helped lead Illinois Tech to a 10-8-1 overall record. The Scarlet Hawks finished sixth in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference with a 6-4 league mark before their season ended in the opening round of the conference tournament. Barrett paced Illinois Tech with a team-high 13 goals to go with his four assists. He was second on the team in points (30).
A first team all-conference selection, Barrett ranks 48th in the NAIA in total goals. The busi
ness major with a 4.00 grade point average (GPA) has scored 44 career goals with 104 career points.
Achten, a senior from Franklin, Tenn., is attempting to lead the third-seeded Flames to their fourth consecutive NAIA national title when they compete in the NAIA National Championship this week (Nov. 28-Dec. 3) in Decatur, Ala. The 2010 NAIA Player of the Year, Achten became the NAIA’s all-time career assist leader. She now has 86 in her career.
A two-time NAIA All-American and the two-time Southern States Athletic Conference Player of the Year, she has helped Lee to a No. 2 national ranking in 2011 and she is ranked No. 1 in the NAIA in assists (21), sixth in points (63) and 11th in goals (21). A communications/marketing major with a 3.97 Grade Point Average, she has scored 82 goals in her career and has 250 points.
Men's Soccer College Division Academic All-America® Team
On the men’s team, there are two first team members that are playing in the postseason, both participating in the NAIA National Championship.
Joining Barrett up front are Tyler Beachler of Taylor University and Jan Dohnal of Goshen College. Beachler led the Mid-Central College Conference in goals (17), assists (11) and points (45) while earning Player of the Year and first team all-conference honors. A senior finance major from Elgin, Ill., he has a 3.41 G.P.A. as a team captain for the Trojans. He led Taylor to a 19-2-1 season that resulted in MCC regular season and tournament championships for the first time since 1997. Taylor qualified for its first NAIA National Championship in school history.
A three-time all-conference first team member, Beachler has 57 career goals with 130 career points. Dohnal, a senior international law major from Hluk, Czech Republic, also landed on the All-Mid-Central College Conference First Team. A two-year member for the Maple Leafs, he scored seven goals and had 16 points while leading them to a 10-8 overall record. The two-time first team all-conference selection carries a 3.79 GPA.
Andrew Bussell from the Master’s College is the goalkeeper representative. A junior from Bakersfield, Cal., Bussell posted a 10-6-3 record in net for the Mustangs to go along with his 1.02 goals-against average, 58 saves and five shutouts. The biological science major owns a 3.85 GPA.
Goshen’s Greg Theissen, Hope International University’s Matthew Howard and Judson College’s Corey Burke compose the first team’s midfield.
Theissen, a senior from Austin, Texas, led Goshen with seven assists as he netted three goals for 15 points. The physics and biology double major has a 3.89 G.P.A. and has tallied 10 career goals and 15 assists during his four seasons with the Maple Leafs. Howard, a junior from Temecula, Calif., led Hope International with 11 goals as he finished with 27 points. An All-Golden State Athletic Conference first team member, Howard is a business management major and carries a 3.95 G.P.A. He has scored 25 goals and has 65 points in three seasons with the Royals.
Burke, a senior from West Chicago, Ill., recorded two goals and three assists for Judson this season. The biology (pre-med) major carries a 3.90 G.P.A. In three seasons with the Eagles, Burke scored 13 goals with eight assists for 34 career points.
Making up the first team’s defense are College of Idaho’s James Collet, Our Lady of the Lake University’s Gary Hamilton, Embry-Riddle (Fla.) Aeronautical University’s Matthias Klatt and McPherson College’s Tyler Tank.
A senior from Pocatello, Idaho, Collet registered one goal and one assist for College of Idaho in helping the Coyotes to a 7-9-2 overall record. The physics major has a 3.92 G.P.A. and has scored two career goals with five career points. Hamilton, a senior from Middlesborough, England, scored one goal this season, the only goal of his four-year career at Our Lady of the Lake. He helped the Saints to 12-6-2 overall record and to the semifinal round of the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament. An All-RRAC First Team member, the biology major has a 3.86 G.P.A.
Klatt, a senior from Berlin, Germany, tallied two goals with an assist while helping Embry-Riddle to an 11-4-2 overall record and The Sun Conference Tournament championship. The Eagles also advanced to the NAIA National Championship Tournament. An aviation business administration major with a 3.71 G.P.A. Klatt was named first team all-conference. He has 11 career goals and 25 career points.
Tank, senior from Austin, Texas, scored one goal while helping McPherson post an 11-7-1 overall record and a Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal appearance. An All-KCAC second team honoree, Tank scored six goals and 14 points in his four-year career with the Bulldogs. The accounting and finance double major has a 3.94 G.P.A.
Women's Soccer College Division Academic All-America® Team
Achten is one of nine players on the first team that are playing in the postseason. Seven of them are playing in the NAIA National Championship while two more players are competing in the NCCAA National Championship in Kissimmee, Fla.
Joining Achten up front are Elizabeth Heuss from Grace College and Maggie Kukuk of Morningside College.
Heuss has scored 12 goals with three assists for 27 points for the Crusaders, who will compete at the NCCAA tournament. Her 30 career goals are fifth-best in school history. A two-time All-Mid-Central College Conference performer, she is a mathematics education/Spanish major with a 3.99 G.P.A. Kukuk holds the career scoring record at Morningside with 170 points. A four-time All-Great Plains Athletic Conference performer, she is also the school’s all-time assist leader with 44. Her 63 career goals rank second on the all-time list. A graduate student, she has a 3.96 G.P.A. in teaching.
Junior Bekah Garvin of Concordia (Ca.) University is the squad’s goalkeeper. A business management major with a 4.00 G.P.A., she helped Concordia advance to the opening round of the NAIA tournament. She is ranked No. 18 in the NAIA with a 0.79 goals against average with 42 saves and seven shutouts.
Ottawa University’s Amanda Just, Oklahoma City University’s Lauren Haymans and Concordia (Ore.) University’s Jackie Hendrickson compose the first team’s midfield.
Just scored nine goals and assisted on eight others for 26 points as Ottawa advanced to the NAIA opening round. The four-time All-Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference performer is a senior biology major with a 3.95 G.P.A. Haymans has helped the Stars to a 16-2-2 record and advance to the final rounds of the NAIA tournament as she has scored a goal and assisted on three others. She is a biomedical sciences major with a 3.97 G.P.A.
Hendrickson has scored six goals and assisted on six others for 18 points as Concordia, which has won 12 Cascade Collegiate Conference titles, has advanced to the final rounds of the NAIA tournament with a 16-4-1 record. The two-time All-CCC performer is a senior with a 3.92 G.P.A. as a business major.
Grace’s Victoria Casey, Faulkner University’s Jessica Monarch, Concordia (Ore.)’s Brittany Orr and Point Loma Nazarene University’s Madi White are the first team defenders.
Casey has registered two assists while helping Grace register seven shutouts and advance to the NCCAA tournament. Casey, who was named the Capital One Academic All-America® College Division third team in 2010, has been named to the All-MCC three times. A senior counseling major with a minor in Spanish, she has a 3.97 G.P.A. Monarch led Faulkner with nine goals and 19 points and was named the SSAC’s Defensive Player of the Year as well as being named to the all-conference team. The senior is a business major with a 3.65 G.P.A.
Orr has helped Concordia to 12 shutouts this season, which is 12th-best in the NAIA. The two-time CCC Defensive Player of the Year has led Concordia to 79 wins in her career and has only allowed the opposition to score more than one goal six times in her stay in Portland. The senior is an international business and Hispanic studies (international studies minor) major with a 3.75 G.P.A.
