Sonoma State senior Keala Peterson leads Capital One Academic All-America Division II Volleyball Team as Team Member of the Year

The 2011 Capital One Academic All-America® volleyball teams are being announced this week (Monday-Thursday, Dec. 12-15). This year, with the expansion of the Capital One program from two teams (University and College Divisions) to four teams (Division I, Division II, Division III and College Divisions), one divisional team per day will be announced.

2011 Capital One Academic All-America Division II Volleyball Team (PDF)

TOWSON, Md. – Senior outside hitter Keala Peterson of Sonoma State headlines the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America® Division II Volleyball Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

A double major in anthropology and psychology, she has a 3.96 G.P.A. Peterson has been chosen as the winner of the Capital One Division II Academic All-America® of the Year award for Division II volleyball.

The Capital One Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2011-12 Capital One D-II Academic All-America® teams program.

Peterson led Sonoma State to a 23-7 record as the Seawolves advanced to the NCAA Division II West Region final before being eliminated. She is one of six AVCA All-Americans on the Capital One Academic All-America team, earning honorable mention AVCA All-American honors. It marked the third time she had received AVCA accolades. She was a third team AVCA All-American in 2009 and an honorable mention selection last year.

As a senior, Peterson led the Seawolves and the California Collegiate Athletic Association with 380 kills, setting a school record with 3.62 kills per set. She added 249 digs and 51 blocks. In her three years with the Seawolves, she accumulated 1,089 kills, fifth on the Seahawks’ all-time list.

While earning All-CCAA honors for the second time, Peterson helped the Seahawks post the best record in school history with a 23-7 mark, good for second place in the league.

The six members of the Capital One Academic All-America® Division II Volleyball first team have an average G.P.A. of 3.98.

A nursing major with a 4.00 G.P.A., senior Mollie Lacy of Washburn is the only repeat selection on the Capital One Academic All-America® Division II Volleyball team. She was a second team selection last year.

A three-time All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association selection, Lacy led Washburn to its second straight conference championship. A native of Lincoln, Neb., Lacy finished her career as one of eight players in school history with 1,000 career kills and 300 career blocks. With 1,220 career kills, she finished 12th on Washburn’s all-time list. As a senior, she was fourth in the MAIAA with a .347 hitting percentage and was seventh in blocks. She led the Lady Blues to a 32-3 record as they lost in the South Central Regional final.

A psychology major with a 3.90 G.P.A., Abilene Christian senior Jennie Hutt earned honorable mention AVCA All-American honors for ACU in addition to claiming a spot on the Capital One Academic All-America® Division II Volleyball first team. An outside hitter, Hutt helped the Wildcats to a 21-11 record and earned first team All-Lone Star Conference honors. She was named all-conference for the third time after earning second team honors twice. Named as the 2011 Lone Star Conference Academic Player of the Year, she was also a first team AVCA All-Region choice. A native of Papillion, Neb., Hutt had 1,543 kills in her career, fourth on the Wildcats’ all-time list.

A trio of scholar-athletes who each has a 4.00 G.P.A. rounds out the Capital One Academic All-America® Division II Volleyball first team. Senior Anna Garrison of Montevallo joins juniors Jennifer Costello of Missouri Science & Tech and Wingate’s Grace Krauser to complete the first team.

A communication studies major with a 4.00 G.P.A., Garrison led Montevallo in assists (968) and digs (291). A veteran setter, she was a two-time All-Peach Belt Conference selection, earning first team honors in 2010. She was also recognized as the PBC Co-Setter of the Year last season. As a senior, the LaVernge, Tenn. native averaged 10.6 assists and 3.2 digs per set.

A junior setter at Missouri Science and Tech, Costello is a chemical engineering major with a 4.00 G.P.A. While averaging 11.12 assists per set, she earned first team All-Great Lakes Valley Conference honors. She helped the Miners post a 24-10 record and finish first in the GLVC’s Southern Division. She was second in the conference in assists and was fourth on her team in digs.

A sociology major with a 4.00 G.P.A., Krauser was named second team All-South Atlantic Conference as a middle blocker for the second year in a row. A member of the SAC Championship all-tournament team, she led the Bulldogs to their sixth consecutive conference title. While averaging 2.85 kills and 0.52 blocks per game, the Louisville, Ky. native helped Wingate post its first-ever undefeated regular season. She also helped the Bulldogs earn their seventh straight NCAA playoff berth. The winner of the NCAA Elite 88 award last year, she has helped Wingate post a 99-5 record during her career.

The Capital One Academic All-America Division® II Volleyball second team is led by senior setter Liz Willis of Wingate, a third team AVCA All-America selection. Wingate and Tampa are the only schools with more than one representative on the Capital One Academic All-America® Division II Volleyball teams. Tampa senior Camille Hanks is on the second team and senior Eva Dupay is on the third team. They led the Spartans to a 33-2 record and a berth in the NCAA Division II semi-finals.

The rest of the second team includes seniors Rhianon Brady (Clarion), Allison Fanta (Minnesota Duluth) and Lauren Huber (Florida Southern). Ashley Sarmiento of Tusculum is the lone sophomore on the second team.

Seniors Allie Huffman of Central Missouri, Sarah Kahrs of Saint Rose and senior Clara Leutheuser of Hillsdale join juniors Meghan Franz of California (Pa.) and Anne Sutton of Ferris State to complete the Capital One Academic All-America® Division II Volleyball third team.
