TOWSON, Md. – Senior gymnast Kayla Hoffman of NCAA champion Alabama and senior golfer Marianne Andersson of Florida Southern College headline the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America® Women’s At-Large Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and announced Thursday.

Hoffman and Andersson have been chosen as the winners of the Academic All-America® of the Year award in the University and College Divisions, respectively.

The Women’s At-Large program for Academic All-America® includes the sports of bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis and water polo.

A human development and family studies major with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A., Hoffman capped off her brilliant career by leading Alabama to its fifth NCAA gymnastics championship in April. A five-time All-American, Hoffman became the first student-athlete to be named as the Southeastern Conference Gymnast of the Year and the SEC Gymnastics Scholar-Athlete of the Year in the same season.

The winner of the 2011 Honda Award, presented to the national collegiate gymnast of the year, the Union, N.J. native led Alabama to the national title with a 9.95 score on vault, a 9.925 on bars and a 9.95 on floor exercise. She earned first team All-American honors in all three events. Named as the NCAA Central Region Gymnast of the Year, Hoffman won the vault, bars, floor and all-around titles at the NCAA Regional Meet. During the 2011 season, she won 29 event titles and scored 9.90 or better 30 times.

The recipient of both the NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship and the SEC post-graduate scholarship, Hoffman won 55 event titles in her career and posted 78 scores of 9.90 or better. In her four-year career, she helped Alabama reach the national championship meet four times. In addition to leading the Crimson Tide to the 2011 championship, she was also part of an Alabama team that finished second in her sophomore year and third place as a junior.

Hoffman added to her distinguished list of awards when she was announced as winner of the Paul W. Bryant Female Student-Athlete of the Year Award, presented to the most outstanding male and female student-athletes at the University of Alabama.

A repeat selection on the Capital One Academic All-America® Women’s At-Large College Division first team, Andersson is a finance major with a 4.00 G.P.A. Named as a first team NGCA All-American as a senior, she earned second team honors in 2010.

A native of Bjuv, Sweden, she had a 75.36 stroke average and finished 11th at the NCAA Division II Tournament in May. Andersson led the Moccasins to a third place finish at the NCAA Division II championship tournament, marking the 11th time in 13 years that Florida Southern finished among the top three at the NCAA championship.

A four-time All-Sunshine State Conference golfer, she earned the NCAA Elite 88 award at the Division II golf championship as the NCAA golf championship competitor with the highest overall GPA. As a senior, she won a tournament and earned eight top-ten finishes.

Andersson finished her career as one of the top golfers in school history with a 76.31 average. As a sophomore, she had one of the best rounds in school history when she carded a 69 score.


Capital One Academic All-America® At-Large Team - University Division

Of the 15 Scholar-Athletes on the Capital One Academic All-America® University Division Women’s At-Large first team, six of them have perfect 4.0 G.P.A.’s. Their average G.P.A. is an incredible 3.98.

Senior Vicki Bendus, an ice hockey standout at Mercyhurst, is the only repeat selection on the Capital One Academic All-America® Women’s At-Large University Division first team.
 
A pair of tennis players, seniors Christine Chiricosta of Bowling Green and Claire Clark of Louisiana Monroe, earned first team honors after being named to the second team last year. Senior skier Eva Huckova of Utah and senior gymnast Maddie Pearsall of Cornell were also members of the second team last year who earned spots on the first team this year.

Graduate student and golfer Katie Detlefsen of Central Florida, and junior swimmer Elina Eggers of Arizona State were third team selections last year who made the first team this season.

Seniors Alyssa DeLorenz of Bucknell (lacrosse), Kristina Frahm of Maryland Eastern Shore (bowling), Kaylee Jamison of Minnesota (swimming) and Therese Koelbaek of Nevada Las Vegas (golf) join juniors Amy Glen of Vermont (skiing), Brooke Pancake of Alabama (golf) and Wendy Trott of Georgia (swimming) to round out the Capital One Academic All-America® Women’s At-Large University Division first team.

With the selection of Hoffman and Pancake, Alabama was the only school with more than one selection on the Capital One Academic All-America® Women’s At-Large University Division first team.

A first team All-American selection, Bendus is a biology and pre-ded major with a 3.95 G.P.A. As a senior, she led Mercyhurst to a 29-6 record and a berth in the NCAA Division I Tournament. The Lakers’ assistant captain, Bendus scored 19 goals with 33 assists in 2011, third on the team. The winner of 2010 Patti Kazmaier Memorial Award as the top player in NCAA Division I women’s ice hockey, she finished her career with 69 goals and 121 assists. The recipient of the 2010 NCAA Elite 88 Award, the Wasaga Beach, Ontario, Canada native led the Lakers to four NCAA Tournament appearances and two trips to the Frozen Four. In 2010, she scored 28 goals with 37 assists to lead Mercyhurst to a 30-3-3 record and the Frozen Four.

An adolescent/young adult/secondary education major with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A., Chiricosta ended her tennis career as Bowling Green’s all-time leader with 178 victories. A two-time All-Mid-American first team pick, she won the MAC’s Sportsmanship Award in 2011. The two-time MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the Avon Lake, Ohio native compiled a 50-20 record as a senior while leading the Falcons to a 15-8 record.

A three-time All-Sun Belt Conference selection, Clark is a kinesiology major carrying a perfect 4.00 G.P.A. In her senior season, she led Louisiana-Monroe to an 18-2 record. As a senior, she compiled an 18-1 record as a singles player and posted a 19-1 mark in doubles play. A native of Bossier City, La., she was honored as the Louisiana Player of the Year in 2011. Clark finished her career with a 63-4 singles record.

A six-time All-American skier, Huckova is a finance major with a 3.99 G.P.A. The 2010 NCAA champion in the grand slalom, she led Utah to a national runner-up finish as a senior. Honored as a first team All-Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Skiing Association selection twice, Huckova earned four top-three finishes as a senior. A native of Banska Bystricka, Slovakia, she was named as the RMISA Scholar-Athlete of the Year twice.

An information science, systems and technology major with a 3.96 G.P.A., Pearsall led Cornell to its first-ever ECAC championship as a senior. The ECAC co-champion on the uneven bars, she is one of the top all-around performers in school history. A member of three Ivy League championship teams, the LaGrange, Ill. native was the ECAC Rookie of the Year as a freshman and earned Academic All-Ivy honors twice.

A graduate student who is working on her Master’s degree in mass communication, Detlefsen earned her Bachelor’s degree in advertising and public relations with a 4.00 G.P.A. One of the top golfers in Central Florida history, she won the LPGA’s Dinah Shore Trophy in 2010, an award given to the student-athlete who best combines academics, community service and golf acumen. A three-time member of the Conference-USA All-Academic team, Detlefsen earned her undergraduate degree in two years. A native of Eagan, Minn., she was named to the All-Conference-USA team in 2010.

The NCAA Division I runner-up on the women’s platform dive in 2011, Eggers is an economics major with a 3.96 G.P.A. A member of the Swedish Olympic team at the Beijing Olympics, she led Arizona State to 18th place at the NCAA Championships. A native of Stockholm, Sweden, she earned silver medals in three diving events at the 2011 Pacific-10 Conference Meet. Eggers was the Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year in 2010.

A second team All-Patriot League pick at goalkeeper, DeLorenz led all NCAA Division I lacrosse goalies with 12.8 saves per game. A four-year starter for Bucknell, she is an accounting major with a 3.98 G.P.A. DeLorenz, the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women’s lacrosse, had a .462 save percentage, second in the league. A first team All-Patriot League selection as a sophomore, the Garland, Tex. native is a member of the Delta Mu Delta international business honor society.

Frahm also is an accounting major, carrying a 3.95 G.P.A. who led Maryland Eastern Shore to the 2011 NCAA Division I women’s bowling championship. A first team All-American selection, she had a 208.67 average and was named as the Most Valuable Performer at the national championship tournament. Named as a first team All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference selection three times, Frahm was also the winner of the NCAA Elite 88 Award. A native of Oswego, Ill., she was awarded the Richard A. Bernstein Award, the highest academic honor given by the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

A five-time All-American swimmer at Minnesota, Jamison is a biochemistry major with a 3.92 G.P.A. The Gophers’ team captain, she led Minnesota to a best-ever ninth place finish at the NCAA championship meet. A two-time Big Ten Conference champion as a member of relay teams, she owns school records in the 100-butterfly and the 200-free. A native of St. Charles, Ill., Jamison is also part of the school record 200-medley relay team.

Honored as the Mountain West Conference Golfer of the Year, Koelbaek set a school record with a 72.00 average for the University of Nevada Las Vegas this season. A two-time All-American, Koelbaek is a marketing major with a 3.97 G.P.A. Ranked among the top 20 golfers in the nation, she was the medalist at the Mountain West Tournament while leading UNLV to a second place finish and a berth in the NCAA Regionals. A native of Holte, Denmark, Koelbaek won four tournaments in her career and earned All-MWC honors four times.

A biology major with a 4.00 G.P.A., Glen led Vermont to a sixth place finish at the NCAA Skiing championship meet. A second team All-American, the Anchorage, Alaska native was also named first team All-East as she helped the Catamounts win their 31st Eastern Intercollegiate Skiing Association championship. Glen finished among the top ten in all seven races in which she competed in her junior year.

Honored as the Southeastern Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year for golf, Pancake is an Honors marketing major with a 4.00 G.P.A. Ranked as high as sixth in the nation, she led Alabama to a second place finish at the SEC Championship Meet by finishing sixth. At the NCAA Championship Meet, the Chattanooga, Tenn. native tied for 19th place as she guided the Crimson Tide to an eighth place finish. The winner of the Elite 88 Award in 2010, she is a two-time All-SEC selection. In 2011, her 72.29 average was the second best mark in school history.

A three-time NCAA swim champion in the 1650-free, Trott is an international affairs major with a 3.96 G.P.A. Only the fifth swimmer to win three NCAA titles, she helped Georgia to a second place finish at the NCAA Championship Meet. A three-time Southeastern Conference champion in the 1650-free, she holds the school record in the 1650-free. Honored as an All-American and an All-SEC selection, the Capetown, South Africa native is a Presidential Scholar who was inducted into the UGA Student-Athlete Leadership Academy.


Capital One Academic All-America® At-Large Team - College Division

The 15 members of the Capital One Academic All-America® College Division first team have an average G.P.A. of 3.95. Seven of the 15 honorees have 4.00 G.P.A.’s.

Senior swimmer Nicole Moody of Wingate and senior tennis standout Melissa Oosterhouse of Calvin join Andersson as the only repeat selections on the Capital One Academic All-America® College Division Women’s At-Large first team.

Senior swimmers Molly Evans of Carnegie Mellon, Kendra Stern of Amherst and Tanya Sylvester of Truman State were second team honorees last year who were named to the first team this season. Junior swimmer Catie Baker of DePauw, a second team selection in 2010, also earned a spot of the first team this year.

Senior swimmer Laura Barito of Stevens Tech and junior field hockey standout Celena Dopart of Worcester Polytechnic Institute, a pair of third team selections last year, were also named to the Capital One Academic All-America® College Division Women’s At-Large first team.

Swimmers Anne Culpepper of Emory and Catherine Leix of Wayne State were also named to the Capital One Academic All-America® College Division Women’s At-Large first team as eight swimmers were named to the first team.

Senior golfers Katja Dammann of UNC-Pembroke and Emily Flanigan of Florida Southern were also named to the first team. Senior Kristen Brooks, a field hockey player at Shippensburg, and senior Sara Yungner, an ice hockey player at Gustavus Adolphus, round out the first team.

Florida Southern was the only school with more than one Scholar-Athlete named to the Capital One Academic All-America® College Division Women’s At-Large first team.

A psychology major with a minor in History and a 4.00 G.P.A., Moody graduated summa cum laude from Wingate. A four-year standout for the Bulldogs’ swimming and diving team, she earned one first team All-American honor and five honorable mention All-American awards. As a senior, she helped Wingate finish as runner-up at the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Meet. A native of Grovetown, Ga., she graduated with the school record in the 100-backstroke. Moody is also a member of four record-setting relay teams. The recipient of an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, Moody is a member of three national honoraries, Phi Eta Sigma, Alpha Kappa Delta and Phi Chi.

Oosterhouse led Calvin to a 19-4 record and the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association tennis championship in 2011. A biology major with minors in chemistry and Spanish, Oosterhouse has a 3.94 G.P.A. Honored as the MIAA Most Valuable Player as a junior and senior, she compiled an 19-2 record while playing number one singles this season. She reached the Round of 16 at the NCAA Division III championship. A native of Grand Rapids, Mich., she set a school record with 78 singles wins in his career. A four-time All-MIAA first team pick, Oosterhouse was the winner of the NCAA Elite 88 award last year.

The University Athletic Association champion in the 200 I.M., Evans is a biology major with a 4.00 G.P.A. As a senior, she led the Carnegie Mellon swim team to a third place finish at the UAA swimming championship meet. An honorable mention All-American, she broke eight school records as a senior. She graduated with nine individual school records. After earning third team Academic All-America® honors as a sophomore and second team notice as a junior, the Butler, Pa. native was named to the first team this year. A 23-time All-UAA swimmer, Evans won three UAA titles in her career.

Honored as the National Swimmer of the Year, Stern graduated from Amherst magna cum laude. An art history and Spanish major with a 3.75 G.P.A., she was a 10-time individual NCAA champion. Honored as the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Swimmer of the Year three times, she led Amherst to a second place finish at the NESCAC Championship. In her career, Stern won 12 individual NESCAC titles. An Olympic qualifier in three events, the Albuquerque, N.M. native graduated with three NCAA records, six NESCAC marks and ten school records.

A Biology major with a 4.00 G.P.A., Sylvester was a three-time All-American for Truman State as a senior. She finished 12th in NCAA Division II in the 200-butterfly and was part of two All-American relay teams. The recipient of an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, she led the Bulldogs to their 11th straight New South Intercollegiate Swimming Conference championship. A native of Rochester, Minn., Sylvester was a nine-time All-American at Truman State.

A two-time All-American in the 100-breaststroke and the 200-breaststroke for the DePauw swimming and diving team, Baker is a computer science and mathematics major with a 3.98 G.P.A. Selected as the Most Outstanding Swimmer at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Meet, she led the Tigers to a second place finish. At the SCAC Meet, she won the 200-breast for the third year in a row while capturing titles in the 100-breast and the 200 I.M. A native of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Baker has been named as the SCAC Swimmer of the Year twice and holds two school records.

The NCAA Division III national champion in the 50-free, Barito earned 18 All-American honors during her swimming and diving career at Stevens Tech. A mechanical engineering major with a 3.87 G.P.A., she was named as the Empire 8 Swimmer of the Year. A native of Arkadelphia, Ark., Barito graduated with three school records and is part of five record-setting relay teams. Barito, who also competed for the Stevens Tech track and field team, was honored as the school’s Athlete of the Year twice.

An aerospace engineering major with a minor in English and a 4.00 G.P.A., Dopart is a two-year starter for the Worcester Polytechnic Institute field hockey team. As a junior, she started 17 games and scored three goals with a team high seven assists. Named to the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference All-Academic team, the Washington, D.C. native is vice-president of the Society of Women Engineers.

A member of back-to-back NCAA Division III swimming and diving championship teams at Emory, Culpepper is an English and economics major with a 3.83 G.P.A. She has helped Emory win back-to-back national titles by winning the 200-backstroke twice. The owner of three school records, Culpepper has 11 All-American certificates in her career. A native of Warner Robins, Ga., she was a five-time All-American in 2011.

An 11-time All-American swimmer for Wayne State, Leix is a science education major with a minor in Biology and a 3.93 G.P.A. After missing her junior season with an injury, Leix came back to earn four All-American awards in 2011. The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) champion in the 500-free and 1650-free, the Flint, Mich. native finished fifth in the 500-free and the 1650-free at the NCAA Championship.

The 2011 Peach Belt Conference medalist for UNC Pembroke, Dammann is a business major with a 4.00 G.P.A. A two-time All-Peach Belt Conference first team selection, she led the Braves to the conference title in 2011 and a berth in the NCAA Division II regionals. A native of Schwerin, Germany, she was the Peach Belt Conference Golfer of the Week three times. She was honored as the Peach Belt Scholar-Athlete in 2011.

A teammate of Andersson’s on the Florida Southern golf team, Flanigan is a human movement and performance major with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A. Honored as a first team All-American by the NGCA in 2011, she helped the Moccasins to a third place finish at the NCAA Division II championship tournament, marking the 11th time in 13 years that Florida Southern finished among the top three at the NCAA championship. The Moccasins’ top golfer at the Sunshine State Conference Tournament and the NCAA national championship meet, Flanigan had a 75.23 stroke average, second on the team. A native of Celebration, Fla., she earned first team all-conference honors and carded a 69 score in the third round of the NCAA Tournament.

A management and marketing major with a 3.98 G.P.A., Brooks led the Shippensburg field hockey team to a 21-2 record and second place in the NCAA Division II Tournament. A two-time winner of the NCAA Elite 88 Award, Brooks led a defense that allowed only 20 goals in 23 games with nine shutouts. A native of Lancaster, Pa., she helped Shippensburg set a school record for wins in a season. Top-ranked in the nation for most of the year, the Raiders dropped a 1-0 decision to UMass-Lowell in the NCAA championship game.

A four-year starter for the Gustavus Adolphus College ice hockey team, Yungner was a biology major with a 3.96 G.P.A. who graduated summa cum laude. A starter in all 30 games as a senior, she led the Gusties to a 22-5-3 record and the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship. The winner of the NCAA Elite 88 Award at the NCAA Division III women’s ice hockey championship, the Maple Grove, Minn. native led the Gusties to a fourth place finish at the NCAA Tournament. In her career, she played in 103 consecutive games and led her team to a 91-16-9 record. A two-time All-MIAC selection, she will attend medical school at the University of Minnesota.

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
