Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Men's & Women's Soccer Teams

TOWSON, Md. – Senior forwards Elaine Gerry of Edgewood College and Nate Bascom of Ohio Northern University lead the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Men’s and Women’s Soccer Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Gerry and Bascom have been chosen as the Capital One Division III Academic All-America® of the Year award winners for women’s and men’s soccer, respectively.
The Capital One Division III Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2011-12 D-III Academic All-America® teams program.
Gerry, a two-time Capital One Academic All-America® first team selection, was the Eagles’ top scorer and ranks sixth in the nation with 25 goals and 58 total points. She led Edgewood to a 15-4-1 record.
An accounting major with a 3.95 G.P.A., Gerry became only the 17th Division III player to reach 100 career goals. A native of Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin, Gerry is a two-time Northern Athletic Conference Player of the Year and a four-time first-team All-NAC selection.
Bascom, a two-time Capital One Academic All-America® honoree, has led the Polar Bears to the NCAA Division III semi-finals with 50 points on 17 goals and 16 assists. A native of Maderia, Ohio, Bascom is the ONU career record holder in points and assists.
A biology major with a 3.71 G.P.A., Bascom was a second team Capital One Academic All-American® last season and has been named to the NSCAA All-America second team twice. Bascom is also a two-time Ohio Athletic Conference Forward of the Year.
Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Women's Soccer Team
Joining Gerry on the women’s first team are repeat Capital One Academic All-Americans® are
junior goalkeeper Andrea Karl of Denison, junior defender Caitlin Cramer of Hardin-Simmons, senior midfielder Carlin Bunting of Wisconsin-River Falls and
senior Kellyn Arnold of Buena Vista.
Eight of the 11 members of the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Women’s Soccer first team maintain a 4.00 G.P.A. The team has an average G.P.A. of 3.975.
A biochemistry major with a 4.00 G.P.A.,
Karl led the Big Red to the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament championship. A native of Powell, Ohio, Karl is a two-time All-NCAC selection and was a Capital One Academic All-America® third team honoree in 2011. In 2012, she posted five shutouts and had a 1.05 goals against average.
Cramer, an exercise science major with a 4.00 G.P.A., anchored a Cowgirls defense that allowed just eight goals and advanced to the third round of NCAA Division III tournament third round. She helped Hardin-Simmons post an 18-1-2 record. A native of Abilene, Texas, Cramer was a Capital One Academic All-America® third team honoree in 2011.
A business administration and political science double major with a 4.00 G.P.A.,
Bunting was selected as first team All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and the 2012 WIAC Soccer Scholar-Athlete this season. A native of Cottage Grove, Minn., Bunting was a Capital One Academic All-America® second team honoree in 2011.
A mathematics major with a 3.96 G.P.A.,
Arnold led the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a school-record 20 goals. A native of Minnetonka, Minn., Arnold was a Capital One Academic All-America® third team honoree in 2011 and is now Buena Vista’s first women’s soccer two-time Academic All-America® performer.
Seniors Ashley Barwick of Dubuque, Emily Bates (Otterbein) and
Kate Hermann (Milwaukee-Engineering) represent the first team defense.
Juniors Alicia Frey of Messiah and
Devon Howard (Hardin-Simmons) join Bunting in the midfield, while
junior Adria Graham of Frostburg State completes the front line.
An accounting and business double major with a 4.00 G.P.A.,
Barwick helped the Spartan defense set a school record by playing 524 minutes without allowing a goal. A native of Appleton, Wisc., Barwick scored five career goals and added two assists and anchored a defense that tallied 27 shutouts.
A mathematics major with a 4.00 G.P.A.,
Bates anchored a Cardinal defense that allowed 14 goals en route to capturing the Ohio Athletic Conference regular season title and a 13-6 record. A native of New Concord, Ohio, Bates is a three-time Academic All-OAC selection.
A biomedical engineering major with a 4.00 G.P.A.,
Hermann recorded a career high 10 assists and helped the Raiders reach the Northern Athletics Conference Tournament semi-finals. A native of Sycamore, Illinois, Hermann recorded six goals with 14 assists in her career.
Frey, a mathematics and secondary education double major with a 3.82 G.P.A., led Messiah to its ninth-straight NCAA Division III semi-final appearance. While scoring 28 points on 12 goals and four assists, she has led Messiah to a 22-2-1 record. A native of Dillsburg, Pa., Frey is a two-time All-Commonwealth Conference selection, earning first team honors in 2012.
An accounting and economics double major with a 4.00 G.P.A.,
Howard joins Cramer as Hardin-Simmons teammates on the Capital One Division III Academic All-America® first team. She scored 10 goals and added 16 assists this season as she helped the Cowgirls advance to the third round of the NCAA Division III Tournament and an 18-1-2 record. A native of Abilene, Tex., Howard was a first-team All-American Southwest Conference selection.
Graham is an athletic training major who holds a 4.00 G.P.A. and led the Capital Athletic Conference with 23 goals and 54 points as Frostburg won the CAC Tournament title with a 14-4-2 record. A native of Grantsville, Md., she has been named as the CAC Player of the Year twice. In her career, she has 51 goals with 12 assists.
Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Men's Soccer Team
The 11 members of the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Men’s Soccer Team carry an average G.P.A. of 3.916, while two of the student-athletes maintain a perfect 4.00 G.P.A.
Bascom is one of three repeat selections on the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Men’s Soccer first team.
Senior defender Kevin Burke of Rutgers-Camden and
senior midfielder Ryan Greenhill of Hiram were also honored.
An accounting major with a 3.88 G.P.A.,
Burke led a defense that guided the Raptors to the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. A native of Sewell, N.J., Burke earned honorable-mention All-New Jersey Athletic Conference status this season and was a Capital One Academic All-America® third team honoree in 2011.
A management and accounting double major with a 3.98 G.P.A.,
Greenhill was named the North Coast Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year with 19 points on five goals and nine assists. A native of Solon, Ohio, Greenhill was a second-team Capital One Academic All-America® pick last season. A four-time All-NCAC and two-time NSCAA All-Great Lakes Region honoree for Hiram, Greenhill is the only Terrier in program history to be named an NCAC Player of the Year.
The eight other members of the Capital One Academic All-America® Division III men’s soccer first team are first-time honorees.
Junior Peter Maxted of Swarthmore is the first team goalkeeper while
senior Tyler Iosue of Rensselaer Polytechnic, senior Danny Kenny of Illinois Wesleyan and
junior Kevin Parma (Western New England) round out the backfield.
Senior Bill McGuiness (Scranton) and
junior Matt Sarett of Carnegie Mellon join Greenhill in the midfield.
Juniors Simon Ginet (Carleton) and
Mahir Mameledjiza (Lake Forest) complete the front line.
An economics major with a 3.92 G.P.A.,
Maxted led the Garnet to a 16-3-2 record and the third round of the NCAA Division III Tourney. He made 62 saves with five shutouts and an 0.54 Goals Against Average. A Port Washington, N.Y. native, he was a first team All-Centennial Conference pick and led the league in GAA.
A mechanical engineering major with a 3.95 G.P.A.,
Iosue was a top defender for the Engineers, who reached the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament with a 10-6-6 record. A native of Spofford, N.H., Iosue is a three-time Liberty League All-Academic honoree.
An environmental & hispanic studies double major with a 4.00 G.P.A.,
Kenny set an Illinois Wesleyan record with eight assists in 2012. A native of Wildwood, Mo., Kenny earned second-team All-College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin honors and ended his career with 14 assists, second in program history.
An accounting and finance double major with a 3.93 G.P.A.,
Parma was named first-team All-Commonwealth Coast Conference in 2012. A native of Peconic, N.Y., Parma had three goals and three assists from the backline.
McGuiness is a finance major with a 3.93 G.P.A. and helped Scranton reach the NCAA Division III Tournament quarter-finals for the time in 29 years. A native of Forty Fort, Pennsylvania, McGuiness helped the Royals win the conference championship as they finished with a 17-2-2 record. He scored 12 goals with seven assists and was named as the Landmark Conference Offensive Player of the Year.
An electronics and computer engineering/biomedical engineering double major with a 4.00 G.P.A.,
Sarett led Carnegie Mellon to NCAA Division III Tournament and a 14-6-1 record. A native of Huntersville, N.C., he was named first team All-University Athletic Association, scoring three goals with two assists.
Ginet, a sociology and anthropology double major holding a 3.96 G.P.A., was the top scorer for the Knights, who reached the NCAA Division III Tournament. A native of Arlington, Mass., Ginet had 34 points on 12 goals and 10 assists en route to earning first-team All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors.
A Spanish and chemistry double major with a 3.82 G.P.A.,
Mameledzija was honored as the Midwest Conference Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year. A native of Visoko, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Mameledzija is a two-time MWC Offensive Player of the Year and led the nation during the regular season with 27 goals, 1.35 goals per game and 2.95 points per game.
