TOWSON, Md. – Senior forward Marc Herschberger of Metropolitan State and senior midfielder Megan Woodworth of Colorado School of Mines lead the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Soccer Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Herschberger has been chosen as the recipient of the Academic All-America® of the Year award for Division II men’s soccer while Woodworth won the award for women’s soccer.
The Capital One Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2011-12 D-III Academic All-America® teams program.
A management and marketing major with a 3.91 Grade Point Average (G.P.A.),
Herschberger is making his first appearance on the Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA Division II first team. He led Metro State to a 12-7-1 record and a third place finish in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
A two-time Daktronics second team All-South Central Region selection, Herschberger finished the year with 12 goals, four assists and 28 points. The Westminster, Col. native was named to the Capital One Academic All-America® third team as a junior. He was also a second team selection by the National Soccer Coaches Association (NSCAA) on its All-Region team in 2011. He finished his career with 24 goals and 20 assists and was honored as the RMAC Academic Player of the Year twice.
Woodworth, a native of Centennial, Col., is a repeat selection on the Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA Division II first team. A chemical engineering major w
ith a 3.88 G.P.A., she was chosen as a third team Capital One Academic All-America® selection as a sophomore.
Woodworth led the No. 15 Orediggers to an 18-4-2 record and a berth in the South Central Regional, where they defeated Metro State before losing in a shootout to UC San Diego in the quarterfinals. She scored 11 goals with 13 assists, the fourth-highest total in Division II. While playing in all 24 matches, she had 35 points. She holds the school record with 44 career assists. She is also the second-leading scorer in program history with 38 career goals and 120 career points.
Woodworth was also recognized as a 2011 first team NSCAA All-American and a Daktronics All-American. She is also a three-time NSCAA All-Central Region pick. In addition, she was a three-time All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference honoree. A three-time selection as the RMAC Academic Player of the Year, she was also named as the 2011 Colorado Sportswoman of the Year.

senior forward Bryce Shaffer of Bloomsburg is the only two-time first team selection.

Senior Zach Myers (Saginaw Valley State) joins Herschberger and Shaffer as forwards on the first team.
Seven members of the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA II men’s soccer first team have at least a 3.90 G.P.A. while two of them have a perfect 4.00 G.P.A. The 11 first team honorees have an average G.P.A. of 3.86.
A political science and economics major with a 3.98 G.P.A.,
Jorgensen was the East Coast Conference Goalkeeper of the Year in 2012. A native of Copenhagen, Denmark, Jorgensen led LIU Post to an 18-2 overall record, an ECC championship and the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Division II East Region. He also earned Daktronics All-East Region first team honors after posting a 0.99 Goals Against Average that included four shutouts and an .806 save percentage.
A Capital One Academic All-America® third team defender for Indianapolis in 2011,
Barnett owns a 4.00 G.P.A. as an exercise science major. The Plainfield, Ind. native was a Daktronics All-Midwest Region selection as a junior. A two-year starter, he scored five goals in his career and led the Greyhounds to a 7-8-3 record as a senior.
The Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Year,
Duffy was named all-conference three times. The Knaresborough, England native is an economics major with a 3.90 G.P.A. and was the second-leading scorer for the Tritons, helping Eckerd reach the conference championship game.
A native of Knaresborough, England, he was named first team Daktronics All-South Region twice.
A chemical and biochemical engineering major with a 3.67 G.P.A.,
Page-Belknap led Colorado School of Mines to a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament championship and the second seed in the South Central Region. The Evergreen, Col. native anchored a defense that posted a 1.07 Goals Against Average and recorded seven shutouts. A third team all-conference defender, he scored five goals and had three assists for a team that finished with a 14-5-2 record.
Named as the Northeast-10 Conference Defensive Player of the Year,
Zeiner led Bentley to a 10-5-2 record. An accountancy major with a 3.84 G.P.A., Zeiner earned Daktronics All-Region honors twice. A native of North Granby, Conn., Zeiner was named to the All-NE-10 team three times in his career. Last year, he was named to the Capital One Academic All-America® Division II men’s soccer second team.
Catlett is a business administration major with a 3.96 G.P.A. at Ohio Dominican who was honored as an All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference midfielder. The Hilliard, Ohio native finished his two-year career with 13 goals and seven assists. He led the team to a 12-6-1 record, including a 9-4 mark in GLIAC play in 2012. He was also a first team Daktronics all-Midwest Region selection in 2011.
Guevara, a Santa Rosa, Cal. native, is a psychology major with a 3.56 G.P.A. He is a three-time All-Pacific West Conference selection at Dominican, he was also named Daktronics All-West Region first team in 2012. He was third in the conference with 12 goals and 27 points while leading Dominican to a 9-7-2 record, the program’s best record since joining the NCAA.
A sports management major with a 4.00 G.P.A. in graduate school,
Martin led St. Edward’s to a 12-3-3 record and a Heartland Conference championship. A native of Heywards Heath, England, he scored four goals and had five assists while earning second team all-conference honors. In 2011, he was a first team all-conference pick and second team all-NSCAA South Central Region selection.
Named as the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year,
Myers has led No. 12 Saginaw Valley State (17-2-4) to the NCAA Division II semi-finals this weekend. A management major with a 3.65 G.P.A., the Grand Rapids, Mich. native has scored 16 goals with two assists. He scored the game-winning overtime goal for Saginaw Valley in the Cardinals’ win over Northeastern State to send them to the national semi-finals. A two-time Daktronics all-region performer, he was named as the GLIAC Defensive Player of the Year.
A two-time All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference selection forward,
Shaffer is a business management with a 3.97 G.P.A. A native of Gettysburg, Pa., Shaffer scored seven goals with two assists as a senior at Bloomsburg. He finished his career with 29 goals, the fourth-highest total in Bloomsburg history. He led the Huskies to a 9-8-1 record in 2012 and was named all-region by Daktronics in 2011.
Capital One Academic All-America® Division II Women's Soccer Team
The 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA II women’s soccer first team has two repeat selections, including Woodworth.
Susan Ellsperman, a senior from the University of Southern Indiana, was a first team selection in 2011.
Six of 11 members of the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA Division II women’s soccer first team have perfect 4.00 G.P.A.’s. The 11 members of the first team have an average G.P.A. of 3.89. Along with Woodworth, all three members of the Division II women’s soccer first team midfield have perfect 4.00 G.P.A.’s.
Junior Rachel Murray of St. Edward’s University, senior Mary Reilly of No. 7 Gannon and
senior Kayla Brown of Columbus State earned third team honors last year and moved up to first team this year.
Senior goalkeeper Chelsea Parise of Grand Valley State was named to the Capital One Academic All-America® Division II women’s soccer first team, along with
defenders Melanie Hoffman of Michigan Tech and
Jennifer Larsen of Montana State, Billings.
Senior Kayla Shain (Central Missouri) and junior Victoria Meinhardt (Minnesota State, Mankato) were named as the midfielders on the first team while j
unior forward Karenee Demery of Cal State Stanislaus rounds out the first team.
A biology (pre-medical program) major with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A.,
Ellsperman helped Southern Indiana post a 10-7-1 record this season. She earned second team All-Great Lakes Valley Conference accolades for the third straight year after scoring eight goals and five assists for 21 points. She is only the fourth USI player to earn all-conference honors three times. Ellsperman concluded her career ranking third in career points (68), fourth in goals (23), and fourth in assists (22).
Murray is also a biology major with a 4.00 G.P.A. at St. Edward’s. A junior from Katy, Texas, she led the Hilltoppers to an 18-3-0 record as they reached the South Central Regional before losing to Metro State. She was the team’s second-leading scorer with 33 points on 13 goals and seven assists. Murray earned first team All-Heartland Conference honors for the second straight year. She was also a 2011 NSCAA and Daktronics first team all-region pick and was third team choice in 2010. Murray was the 2010 Heartland Conference Freshman of the Year.
A senior defender for No. 7 Gannon University,
Reilly is a physician assistant major with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A. A native of Akron, Ohio, Reilly helped Gannon post the best season in school history with a 13-4-2 final record. Named to the Capital One Academic All-America® third team last year, Reilly was part of a solid defense that recorded 12 shutouts and had an impressive 0.54 GAA. She added two assists.
A communications major with a 3.93 G.P.A.,
Brown earned first team All-Peach Belt Conference honors for Columbus State this season. A member of the Capital One Academic All-America® third team last year, she led the No. 19 Cougars to an 18-3-2 record. Columbus State reached the second round of the NCAA Division II Tournament where the Cougars were eliminated on penalty kicks. Brown spearheaded a defense that allowed just 13 goals while posting 13 shutouts and finished with a 0.55 GAA. She also led the Cougars with eight assists and scored one goal. Brown earned was an NSCAA All-Region honors three times.
A criminal justice major with a 3.39 G.P.A.,
Parise has led Grand Valley State to a 20-1-3 record and a berth in the NCAA Division II semi-finals with her stellar performance at goalkeeper. Parise was a 2011 NSCAA first team All-American after earning second team honors in 2010, and was a second team Daktronics All-American in 2011. A native of Sterling Heights, Mich., she leads Division II with a 0.34 goals against average. Parise has posted 15 shutouts this season and has 70 saves. The Lakers, who were national runners-up last season, defeated Minnesota State Mankato in the quarterfinals, 2-2 on penalty kicks. A four-time All-Great Lakes Valley Conference selection, Parise was named as the GLIAC Defensive Player of the Year as a senior. She already holds the NCAA Division II career record with 59 shutouts and has 85 career wins, the top figure all-time in the GLVC.
An exercise science major with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A., Michigan Tech's
Hoffman led the Huskies to a 14-3-2 record. While setting a school record for wins, the Huskies shared the conference regular season title. Twelve of those wins were shutouts. Hoffman was an honorable mention All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection. She is a three-sport standout at Michigan Tech who also competes for the track team and Nordic skiing squad.
An HHP teaching option K-12 major with a 3.92 G.P.A.,
Larsen is the fourth defender on the Capital One Academic All-America® Division II women’s soccer first team. A first team All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference selection, she led Montana State University Billings to a 13-6-1 record. A native of Mesa, Ariz., she helped Montana State Billings reach the inaugural GNAC Tournament championship match. Larsen finished the season with three goals and an assist on offense. She also led a defense that allowed just 17 goals and recorded 10 shutouts.
A junior communication disorders major with a 4.00 G.P.A.,
Meinhardt helped No. 17 Minnesota State Mankato reach the NCAA Division II quarterfinals. The Mavericks were eliminated by penalty kicks in a shootout against Grand Valley State, ending the season with a 17-1-5 record. A native of Maple Grove, Minn., she finished the season with five goals and 10 assists for 20 points. Meinhardt was a second team All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference selection this season after earning third team honors in 2010.
Shain is a senior speech pathology major with a 4.00 G.P.A. and was named as the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Player of the Year. A native of Olathe, Kansas, she led the Jennies to a berth in the NCAA Division II Central Region finals. Central Missouri was eliminated in a shootout to Minnesota State Mankato, finishing the year with a 16-2-5 record. Central Missouri reached the NCAA Round of 16 for the second time in school history while winning its fifth MIAA regular season title. Shain finished the season with four goals and seven assists for 15 points and was named as the 2012 MIAA Player of the Year. A three-time All-MIAA selection, she holds school records with 25 career assists and 10 assists in a season.
Honored as the California Collegiate Athletic Association Most Valuable Offensive Player of the Year in 2011 and 2012,
Demery rounds out the first team. A business major with a 3.72 G.P.A., Demery helped the Cal State Stanislaus to a 15-4-0 record by scoring 19 goals with three assists. Honored as the CCAA Freshman of the Year in 2010, she already owns the school records for goals (54) in a career and points (128) in a career. A Daktronics second team All-American selection, she was also honored as the West Region Player of the Year. A native of Merced, Cal., Demery scored nine game-winning goals this season.
