TOWSON, Md. – Senior goalkeeper Scott Goodwin of the University of North Carolina and senior forward Dana Larsen of Baylor University lead the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Men’s and Women’s Soccer Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Goodwin and Larsen have been chosen as the winners of the Capital One Academi
c All-America® of the Year award for the Division I Men’s and Women’s soccer teams, respectively.
A biology major with a 3.95 G.P.A.,
Goodwin was named as the Capital One Academic All-America® of the Year in Division I men’s soccer. He has led the No. 5 Tar Heels (16-3-3) into the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Cup quarterfinals against Indiana taking place Friday, Nov. 30.
A native of Raleigh, N.C., Goodwin leads the nation in goals against average (0.26) and ranks second in save percentage (.878). He has allowed just six goals, the fewest in the country, and has posted 17 shutouts, setting the UNC single season mark. His 17 shutouts are tied for the fifth-most in any season in NCAA history. Goodwin is UNC's career leader with 41 shutouts, the seventh most in NCAA history.
A Capital One Academic All-America® men’s soccer second team selection in 2011, Goodwin has earned Dean's List honors every semester and is set to graduate in three-and-a-half years. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society.
A biochemistry major with a 4.00 G.P.A.,
Larsen led Baylor to an 19-1-5 record, the Big 12 Conference championship and a berth in the NCAA Championship’s third round. Baylor’s season came to an end when the Bears were eliminated on penalty kicks by North Carolina. A second team Capital One Academic All-America® selection last year, she led the Bears with 11 goals, nine assists and 31 points. A native of Mequon, Wis., Larsen earned All-Big 12 second team honors this season.
Larsen, who started in 83 of 85 matches during her career, is fifth on Baylor’s all-time scoring list with 29 goals. She was a three-time Big 12 All-Academic selection and a regular on the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Men's Soccer Team
Five members of the Capital One Academic All-America® Men’s Soccer Division I first team earned Capital One Academic All-America® honors last season. Senior defender
Chad Barson of Akron is the only repeat first team selection. Goodwin and
senior midfielder Scott Caldwell of Akron were named to the second team last year. Meanwhile,
junior defender Nick Alers of Yale and
junior forward Tyler Riggs of Kentucky were named to the third team last year.
The Capital One Academic All-America® Men’s Soccer Division I first team defense includes senior
Liam Paddock of Maryland Baltimore County and junior Joe Sofia of UCLA.
Caldwell was joined by
Will Betts of Mercer and
Shawn Sloan of High Point as midfielders on the Capital One Academic All-America® Men’s Soccer Division I first team while
junior Reinaldo Brenes of Akron and
senior Reece Wilson of Central Connecticut round out the first team as forwards.
The Capital One Academic All-America® Men’s Soccer Division I first team had an average G.P.A. of 3.94, highlighted by Sloan’s 4.0 G.P.A.
Akron led all schools with three student-athletes named to the Capital One Academic All-America® Men’s Soccer Division I first team. While Barson, Caldwell and Brenes were named first team selections,
senior goalkeeper David Meves was named to the Capital One Academic All-America® Men’s Soccer Division I second team. Barson and Meves are the first three-time Academic All-America® selections in Akron men’s soccer history.
A three-time All-Mid American Conference first team selection,
Barson scored two goals as a senior. Seeded fifth in the NCAA Tournament, the Zips finished the season with an 18-1-3 record and was eliminated on penalty kicks by Creighton in the NCAA quarter-finals. A biology major with a 3.99 G.P.A., Barson earned Capital One Academic All-America® second team honors as a sophomore and first team notice as a junior. The Lewis Center, Ohio native was an NSCAA second team All-American selection.
An accounting major with a 3.94 G.P.A.,
Caldwell is a Hermann Trophy candidate and one of 10 finalists for the Senior CLASS award. A Capital One Academic All-American® second team selection last year, the Braintree, Mass. native scored a career-high nine goals, including three game-winners, and had 10 assists for 28 points this season for Akron. He ranks eighth nationally in assists (10), 23rd in assists per game (0.45), and 29th in total points (28). Named as the Mid-America Conference Player of the Year, he is a two-year team captain and was a NSCAA All-America first team selection last season.
An international business major with a 3.90 G.P.A.,
Brenes led Akron with 11 goals and ranked 29th nationally this season, including four game-winners. He is 22nd in the nation in goals per game (0.65) and 34th in points per game (1.41). The San Jose, Costa Rica native recorded his first career hat trick against Buffalo on Sept. 29. He also earned first team All-MAC honors this season for Akron, which was ranked number one in the nation for a while.
Alers, an economics and political science major with a 3.98 G.P.A., has started all 41 games in which he has appeared in his three seasons at Yale. A native of San Juan, Costa Rica, he was a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Northeast Region third team selection last year. In 2011, he was also named first team All-Ivy and was the recipient of the Walter J. McNerney Award as the team’s most valuable player. In 2012, he earned honorable mention All-Ivy notice for the Bulldogs.
A mechanical engineering major with a 3.91 G.P.A.,
Riggs was a third team All-Conference-USA selection this season. A native of Louisville, Ky., he led Kentucky in goals (7) and points (28). He has scored 23 goals and 55 points in his career, tied for sixth in program history in both categories. Riggs helped the Wildcats earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament in 2012.
A senior with a 3.92 G.P.A. as a psychology and sociology major,
Paddock was the 2012 ECAC Division I Scholar-Athlete of the Year. A team captain at UMBC, he was named as the 2012 America East Defender of the Year and was a repeat selection to the America East all-conference first team. The Worcestershire, England native scored three goals this season while leading the Retrievers to the America East championship and an 11-4-7 record.
A second team All-Pacific-12 selection at UCLA,
Sofia started all 19 games for the Bruins and tallied two goals with four assists. A communications major with a 3.95 G.P.A., Sofia led the team with 1,789 minutes this season. A native of Dove Canyon, Calif., the junior earned first team Pac-12 All-Academic honors in 2011. Sofia led UCLA to the sixth seed in the NCAA Tournament and a 13-3-3 record.
A senior finance major with a 3.98 G.P.A.,
Betts has appeared in 77 games in his career at Mercer, making 74 starts. He was Mercer’s fourth-leading scorer with four goals and three assists while helping Mercer reach the Atlantic-Sun Conference championship game. A native of Brenham, Texas, Betts was the Atlantic-Sun Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2011 and 2012.
A senior chemistry major with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A.,
Sloan was the 2011 Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year at High Point. He finished the season with six goals, 10 assists and 22 points en route to earning first team All-Big South honors. He is third in the nation in assists per game (0.67) and eighth in assists. The Geneva, Ill. native is a three-time Big South Presidential Honor Roll member.
An accounting major with a 3.84 G.P.A.,
Wilson was the 2012 Northeast Conference Player of the Year. He ranks in the top 100 nationally in points per game (1.33, 48th), total points (24, 51st), goals per game (0.5, 55th), total goals (9, 50th), assists per game (0.33, 88th) and total assists (6, 79th). The London, England native was a two-time NEC Player of the Week this season.
Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Women's Soccer Team
The 11 members of the Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Women’s Soccer first team combined for an average G.P.A. of 3.941. There are 10 seniors and one junior on the first team.
Senior forward Abi Cottam of Rider University is the lone repeat selection on the Capital One Academic All-America® Women’s Soccer Division I first team. The native of Leominster, England, carries a 3.99 G.P.A. majoring in psychology and was a candidate for the 2012 Lowe’s Senior CLASS award.
Cottam led Rider to a 10-4-3 record this season, the most wins for the program since 2004. She led the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in assists and was fifth in points per game. Cottam scored four goals with seven assists for 15 points. A first team All-MAAC selection as a junior and senior, the Leominster, England finished her career as Rider’s all-time leader with 26 assists. She also scored 26 goals in her career, the third-highest total in school history.
Senior Nichole Schiro of Loyola University (Md.) joins Cottam and Larsen as the forwards on the Capital One Academic All-America® Division I first team.
Senior Amber Brooks of North Carolina, senior Paige Goeglein of Middle Tennessee State and junior Elizabeth Tucker of Notre Dame were named as the midfielders on the first team.
LaSalle senior goalkeeper Gabrielle Pakhtigian joins senior defenders
Skylar Chew of Ball State, Ally Miller (Marquette), Natalie Norris (Utah State) and Ali Stahlke of Western Kentucky to complete the Capital One Academic All-America® Women’s Soccer Division I first team.
Schiro, who has a double major in biology and pre-medicine with a 3.88 G.P.A., was named as the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year for a conference record third straight season. The native of Okemos, Mich., scored the game-winning goal in the 2012 MAAC championship match as Loyola claimed the program’s 10th title. Schiro, who was a candidate for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, scored 15 goals with four assists for 34 points as a senior. A three-time All-MAAC first team pick, she led the conference in scoring. Schiro is Loyola’s career leader with 51 goals and 117 points. She led Loyola to a 12-6-4 record and an NCAA Tournament appearance.
Named to the Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Women’s Soccer second team last season,
Brooks has led No. 2 North Carolina to a 13-5-3 record and a berth in the NCAA College Cup semi-finals. A communication studies major with a 3.81 G.P.A., Brooks is a four-year starter at midfield for the Tar Heels. A native of New Hope, Pa., Brooks was named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference first team for the second year in a row. She earned second team All-ACC honors as a sophomore. As a senior, she has scored seven goals with six assists for 20 points. One of the 2012 Top Drawer Soccer Top-Ranked Upperclassmen, she led UNC to the 2009 NCAA championship.
Brooks has started 75 of 87 career games for North Carolina and has 16 goals and 19 assists.
An economics major with a 3.93 G.P.A.,
Goeglein scored 14 goals for Middle Tennessee State. A native of Fort Wayne, Ind., Goeglein was named as the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Year after leading the Blue Raiders to a 14-5-1 record. The leading scorer in the Sun Belt Conference with 32 points, she is second in the nation with eight game-winning goals. The 19th-leading scorer in NCAA Division I, she was honored as the Sun Belt Player of the Week twice.
An accountancy major with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A., Tucker captained No. 20 Notre Dame to a 16-6-2 record and the quarter-final round of the NCAA College Cup. A native of Jacksonville, Fla., she scored five goals and three assists for the Fighting Irish, helping ND win a share of the BIG EAST National Division title. A third team All-BIG EAST selection in 2010, she played a key role for Notre Dame’s national championship team as a freshman. She also earned BIG EAST all-tournament team notice.
A nursing major with a 3.94 G.P.A.,
Pakhtigian earned All-Atlantic-10 Conference first team honors as the goalkeeper at LaSalle. A native of North Wales, Pa., she led the Explorers to their second straight A-10 title and an NCAA tournament appearance. She also helped the Explorers post a 17-5-1 record while allowing only 21 goals for a 0.73 Goals Against Average. She made 73 saves and posted 10 shutouts.
A psychology major with minors in counseling and Spanish and a perfect 4.00 G.P.A.,
Chew played every minute on defense for Ball State in 2012. A native of Mason, Ohio, Chew is a three-year starter who led the Cardinals to an 8-7-5 record this season. She scored a pair of goals and added an assist for a Cardinals defense that allowed only 4.8 shots on goal per game. A starter in all 60 games over her last three years, she earned Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Named as the 2012 BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year,
Miller led Marquette to an 18-2-3 record and its first-ever BIG EAST championship. An advertising major with a 3.86 G.P.A., Miller helped the Golden Eagles reach the round of 16 in the NCAA College Cup. A native of Mequon, Wis., she scored seven goals with one assist as a senior and she was named to the All-Big EAST first team. She was a third team pick last year. Miller anchored a defense that posted 17 shutouts and allowed 0.58 goals per game. An All-Region pick as a junior, she was a BIG EAST Academic All-Star three times.
Norris, who has a double major in nutrition, dietetics & food science and exercise science with a 3.95 G.P.A., was named as the Western Athletic Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player after leading Utah State to its second straight WAC championship. A native of Sandy, Utah, Norris earned the WAC Defensive Player of the Year award for the third consecutive season and led the Aggies to a 13-3-6 record. A three-time All-WAC first team selection, Norris was the mainstay of a Utah State defense that allowed 13 goals. She earned NSCAA All-West Region second team honors in 2011.
An elementary education major with a perfect 4.0 G.P.A.,
Stahlke was the 2012 Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year after leading Western Kentucky to a 12-5-3 record. Stahlke was an important part of a WKU defense that only allowed multiple goals twice over the last 30 games. Western Kentucky gave up 0.82 goals per game and posted nine shutouts. She earned all-conference first team honors twice during her career and was named to the NSCAA All-South Region second team last year.
