This week, beginning on Monday, August 6 through Thursday, August 9, CoSIDA and Capital One will be announcing the four Capital One Academic All-America® of the Year award recipients - one each from the College Division, Division III, II and I. These four top scholar-athletes are chosen from all the divisional Team Members of the Year who have been honored throughout the academic year.

TOWSON, Md. – Senior Drew Golz of Wheaton (Ill.) College, who earned Capital One Academic All-America® honors in men’s soccer and baseball, has been named as the 2011-12 Capital One Division III Academic All-America® of the Year, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The Capital One Division III Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2011-12 Division III Academic All-America
® teams program.
A chemistry major with a 3.98 G.P.A., Golz became the first male scholar-athlete to earn the Academic All-America® of the Year award in two sports in the same year, earning the award in men’s soccer and baseball.
“This is an unbelievable honor, and I am extremely grateful to be this year's recipient,” said Golz. “It was a blessing to be able to attend Wheaton College and be a part of a school that values both academics and athletics. I want to thank all of my professors, teammates, and coaches, especially Coach (Michael) Giuliano [men’s soccer] and Coach (Lee) Driggers [baseball], for making this possible.”
During the fall, Golz made his second straight appearance on the Capital One Academic All-America® Division III men’s soccer first team. A native of River Forest, Illinois, he was named to the All-College Conference of Illinois Wisconsin first team after leading Wheaton with 26 points on 10 goals and six assists.
A three-time All-CCIW selection in soccer, he scored 29 goals with 14 assists in his career. As a senior, he led the Thunder to a 10-8-2 record. The recipient of an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, he also earned All-Central Region honors twice.
An All-American first team selection by the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings, Golz was an outstanding pitcher and outfielder for the Wheaton baseball team. As a senior, he earned Capital One Academic All-America® Division III baseball first team honors for the second time, becoming the first student-athlete from Wheaton to earn Capital One Academic All-America® honors four times.
While leading the Thunder baseball team to a 22-18 record as a senior, he batted a team high .404 and tied for the team lead with 45 runs scored. A two-time All-College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) selection, Golz had 12 doubles, three triples, four home runs and 27 RBI’s. Golz finished his career with a .356 batting average, fifth on Wheaton’s all-time list.
As a lefthanded pitcher, he tied the school record for victories in a single season by posting an 8-2 record. He threw eight complete games in 10 appearances and tossed three shutouts in 85-2/3 innings of work. His 2.52 E.R.A. was third on the team with 46 strikeouts and only 24 walks.
He was the winner of the Paul Wright Prize for Achievement in Physical Chemistry.
The Capital One Academic All-America® of the Year award winners in the other divisions will be announced this week.
On Wednesday, Aug. 8, the Capital One Division II Academic All-America® of the Year award winner will be announced. The Capital One Division I Academic All-America® of the Year award winner will be named on Thursday, Aug. 9. The
College Division winner - Lee University women's soccer standout Jamie Achten - was announced on August 6.
