TOWSON, Md. – Junior guard Brad Karp of Saint Xavier University and
junior guard Hollie German of Lee University headline the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® College Division Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Karp and German have been chosen as the winners of the Capital One Academic All-America® of the Year award for the men’s and women’s basketball teams, respectively.
A biology major from Valparaiso, Ind.,
Karp carries a 3.61 grade point average. He leads the Cougars in scoring and rebounding this season, averaging 22.1 points and 9.0 rebounds per game. He ranks fourth in NAIA Division II in total scoring with 619 points, and he is quickly closing in on his 2,000th-career point. In addition, Karp has been named the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week six times out of 13 weeks this season. Karp has led the seventh-ranked Cougars to a 25-4 record this season.
A member of the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® second team, Karp earned NAIA All-American second team honors as a sophomore. He averaged 23.6 points and 8.5 rebounds per contest during his sophomore year. A two-time All-CCAC first team honoree, Karp was the CCAC Freshman of the Year in 2010-11 when he averaged 19.5 points per game.
German, a mathematics and secondary education major from Benton, Tenn., owns a 3.98 GPA. The sixth-leading scorer in NAIA Division I with a 20.04 average, German has led the seventh-ranked Flames to a 24-2 record.
German, who is fourth in the NAIA with 75 three-point field goals, is ranked among the NAIA leaders free throw percentage (.800), assists (106), three-point field goal percentage (.387) and assists per game (4.1).
A second-team NAIA All-American in 2012, she was also named as the Southern States Athletic Conference’s Divisional Player of the Year and earned a spot on the all-conference team in 2012 when she helped the Lady Flames to a 30-4 record.
Capital One Academic All-America® College Division Men's Basketball Team
Joining Karp on the men’s first team are
senior guards Casey Coons of Taylor University and
senior Coleson Rakestraw of John Brown University. Coons was the Capital One Academic All-America® College Division Team Member of the Year in 2012. Coons and Rakestraw are repeat selections on the Capital One Academic All-America® College Division first team.
Junior forward Michael Greene of Northwest University was named to the first team this year after earning second team notice last year.
Senior fTrevor Wolterstorff of Dordt College completes the 2012-13 Capital One Academic All-America® College Division first team.
The five members of the Capital One Academic All-America® College Division Men’s Basketball first team have an average of G.P.A of 3.80.
A health and physical education major from Indianapolis, Ind.,
Coons has a 3.76 G.P.A. One of the top four scorers in Trojan program history, Coons recently eclipsed the 2,000-point mark for his career. An honorable mention NAIA All-American selection as a junior, he has led the No. 24 Trojans to a 19-9 record this season. A two-time All-Mid-Central College Conference honoree, he is Taylor’s leading scorer with a 16.1 scoring average. He also ranks fourth in the NAIA with 95 three-pointers made.
Rakestraw, an electrical and computer engineering major from Siloam Springs, Ark., boasts a 3.92 G.P.A. Rakestraw paces the Golden Eagles’ offense with 11.6 points per game. He has helped John Brown University post a 24-4 record and a 13-1 conference mark while leading the Golden Eagles to its first-ever Sooner Athletic Conference regular season championship.. A career 40-percent, three-point shooter, he is 14th in NAIA Division I this season with a 44.2 shooting percentage from three-point range.
An accounting and finance major from Bellingham, Wash.,
Greene carries a 3.91 G.P.A. Greene leads Northwest in several categories including scoring (18.1 points per game), rebounding (8.7 rebounds per game), assists (2.62 per game) and steals (1.45 per game). Ranked second in NAIA Division II in field-goal percentage at 66.6 percent, Greene helped Northwest make back-to-back national tournament appearances in 2011 and 2012.
Wolterstorff, a psychology major from Sioux Center, Iowa, carries a 3.82 G.P.A. Averaging 14.3 points per game, Wolterstorff leads Dordt College in rebounding with a 6.7 average. A three-time NAIA All-American, he earned All-American notice in men’s basketball twice and once in track & field. Wolterstorff is the second-leading in school history with 1,883 career points and a three-time All-Great Plains Athletic Conference pick. Last year, he led the Defenders to a 30-5 record and a berth in the NAIA quarter-finals.

Joining German on the Capital One Academic All-America® College Division Women’s Basketball first team are
senior center Kelsey Canavan of Lubbock Christian University, senior guard Laura Carroll of Asbury University, sophomore forward Katie Gonnering of St. Francis (Ill.) and
senior forward/center Esther Timmermans of Vanguard University.
The five members of the Capital One Academic All-America® College Division Women’s Basketball first team have a 3.97 average G.P.A.
Canavan, an accounting and finance major from El Paso, Texas, has a perfect 4.0 G.P.A. She leads the Sooner Athletic Conference with a .532 field goal percentage and ranks 13th in the NAIA. The third-leading scorer for the No. 3 Lady Chaparrals, she averages 12.6 points per game. She is second on the team with a 6.6 rebounding average while leading Lubbock Christian to a 23-3 record. As a junior, Canavan averaged 16.5 and 8.2 rebounds per game while earning second-team NAIA All-American honors.
An elementary education major from Paintsville, Ky.,
Carroll owns a 3.99 G.P.A. The all-time leading scorer in school history with 1,589 points, she is ranked No. 1 in NAIA Division II free throw percentage (.942). A three-time All-Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honoree, Carroll is also ranks 34th in the nation in scoring with a 16.4 average. Carroll, who ranks second on Asbury’s all-time assists list with 403, helped the Eagles win their first KIAC title in 2012. She has helped Asbury to a 20-8 record this year.
Gonnering, a nursing major from Seymour, Wis., carries a perfect 4.00 G.P.A. An honorable mention NAIA Division II All-American as a freshman, she also earned All-Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference first team notice. A four-time CCAC Player of the Week, Gonnering is the fifth-leading scorer in the NAIA with a 20.5 average. She also ranks 12th in field goal percentage (.526) and 16th in rebounding (9.3). As a freshman, she averaged 16.6 points and 6.4 rebounds per game last year.
A psychology major from Melbourne, Australia,
Timmermans has a 3.88 G.P.A. She has led No. 7 Vanguard to a 19-2 record. She is 45th in the nation in scoring with a 15.6 average. The tenth-leading rebounder in the nation with a 10.3 average, Timmermans ranks 21st in field goal percentage (.511). Last year, she was an honorable mention NAIA All-American and earned All-Golden State Athletic Conference honors.
