TOWSON, Md. – Seniors Kari Daugherty of No. 3 Ashland University and Marcus Ruh of Saint Leo University headline the 2012-13 Capital One Academic All-America® Division II basketball teams as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

A guard/forward for the Eagles, Daugherty has been selected as the 2012-13 Capital One Academic All-America® of the Year for Division II women’s basketball. Ruh has been named as the 2012-13 Capital One Academic All-America® of the Year for Division II men’s basketball

The Capital One Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2012-13 D-II Academic All-America teams program.

A native of Fresno, Ohio, Daugherty is a middle childhood education major with a 3.97 grade point average (G.P.A.). She has led Ashland to the number three ranking in NCAA Division II and a 25-1 record. Last year, she guided the Eagles to the Division II national championship game where they lost to Shaw University, 88-82.

Daugherty currently leads the nation in rebounding (15.0) and double-doubles (17) while ranking second in scoring at 22.5 points per game. She is shooting 52.0 percent from the floor (160 of 304), including 18 of 43 on three-pointers (41.9 pct.). She has made 78.8 percent from the free throw line. In addition, she averages 3.7 assists and 1.7 steals per contest. Daugherty owns the NCAA Division II record for consecutive double-doubles and has a current streak of 34 games.

As a junior, Daugherty was the winner of the 2011-12 Honda Sports Award as the NCAA Division II Female Athlete of the Year and was named as the NCAA Division II National Player of the Year after putting together the greatest season in school history. Named as the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year, she was also honored as the GLIAC Tournament's Most Outstanding Player, the Midwest Region Player of the Year, the NCAA Division II Midwest Region Tournament Most Outstanding Player and was named to the all-tournament team at the NCAA Elite Eight.

As a junior, in her first season at Ashland after transferring from the University of Dayton, she was named a first team WBCA and Daktronics All-American. She led Division II in rebounding and double doubles. Daugherty averaged a school-record 14.1 rebounds per game and had 27 double-doubles (27). She also averaged a school-record 21.3 points per game while setting school records for points in a season (744), rebounds (492), field goals (284) and field goal attempts (565).

While leading Ashland to the NCAA championship game, she set NCAA Tournament records for rebounds (95) and field goals (56) and was one point shy of the tournament record for points, scoring 148.

Ruh, who owns a perfect 4.0 student as a business administration major, is the Lions' leading scorer and has guided them to an 18-5 record and second place in the Sunshine State Conference. A first team All-SSC selection as a junior, he was named to the 2011-12 All-Newcomer team. He was also named to the SSC all-tournament team last season.

As a senior, the Green Bay, Wis. native has picked up where he left off, leading Saint Leo to a No. 16 ranking in the NABC Top-25 and has also eclipsed the 1,000-point plateau in two years. He is averaging 16.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game. Ruh is shooting 47.2 percent from the field and has knocked down 48.9 percent of his three-point attempts (45-of-92), a mark that leads the SSC.

As a junior, the 6-4 guard was the Saint Leo University Male Student-Athlete of the Year. He started all 30 games while averaging 13.4 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.

Capital One Academic All-America® Division II Women's Basketball Team

Daugherty is one two Ashland scholar-athletes on the 2012-13 Capital One Academic All-America® Division II Women’s Basketball first team. Fellow Ashland teammate and senior Daiva Gerbec was also named to the first team, a rare achievement in the Capital One Academic All-America® basketball program.

Senior Brittany Cox of Pfeiffer University has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America® Division II Women’s Basketball first team for the second year in a row. Senior Sarah Hoyt of Michigan Tech and junior Lauren Battista of No. 1 Bentley University complete the first team. They were both members of the second team last year.

The five members of the Capital One Academic All-America® Division II Women’s Basketball first team have an average G.P.A. of 3.95.

A biochemistry major with a 3.94 G.P.A., Gerbec averages 14.7 points and 9.2 rebounds per game for the Eagles. A 6-0 forward from Dublin, Ohio, Gerbec came back strong after sitting out the 2011-12 season with an injury. She is shooting 59.1 percent from the floor and 76.5 percent from the free throw line. Gerbec ranks second in the GLIAC and sixth in NCAA Division II in field goal percentage.

Two years ago, Gerbec earned first team All-GLIAC honors and honorable mention WBCA All-American recognition. She set school records for rebounds (311) in a season and rebounds per game (10.7) in 2010-11 while averaging 15.9 points per contest.

The only repeat selection on the first team, Cox is a sports management major with a 3.96 G.P.A. A 5’9” guard from Winston-Salem, NC, she has led Pfeiffer to a 19-4 record while averaging a team-leading 18.7 points per game, a mark that ranks third in the Carolinas Conference. In addition, she is second on the team with 6.5 rebounds per game while averaging 2.3 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game. She is shooting 42.6 percent from the floor and 83.3 percent from the line. She also ranks as one of the top three-point shooters in the country, hitting 38.3 percent.

As a junior, Cox was named first team all-conference and first team all-region while earning honorable mention Daktronics All-American honors. The top scorer in the Carolinas Conference last year, she averaged 20.8 points per game, a mark that was ninth in Division II. She is the fourth-leading scorer in Pfeiffer history with 1,548 points.

A mathematics major with a 3.94 G.P.A., Hoyt has led Michigan Tech to a 16-7 record. While averaging a team high 16.5 points per game, she is the second-leading free throw shooter in NCAA Division II with a .910 percentage. A two-time All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection, she is averaging 3.3 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game. An honorable mention WBCA All-American as a junior, she averaged 15.7 points per game last year. She is the ninth-leading scorer in

Battista rounds out the first team. A native of North Easton, Mass., she is a marketing/liberal studies major with a 3.94 G.P.A. A 6-0 forward, Battista has led No. 1 Bentley to a perfect 23-0 record. She is averaging 13.8 points and 6.6 rebounds per game, both second on the team. She is also averaging 2.8 assists and 1.6 steals per game while shooting 49.6 percent from the floor. In her three seasons, she has helped the Falcons post an 82-9 record.

Last year, Battista earned WBCA Division II All-America honors after averaging 16.8 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. She became only the second player in school history to earn All-American honors as well as Academic All-America® notice. Named as the 2012 Northeast-10 Player of the Year, she was also the Daktronics Division II East Region Player of the Year. Named as the Most Outstanding Player at the NCAA Division II East Regional, She was also the MVP of the Northeast-10 Tournament. She became just the second player to reach the 1,000-point plateau as a sophomore. She currently ranks 13th in career scoring with 1,343 points, and is tied for 18th in career rebounds (625).

Seniors Kristen Blye of Philadelphia, Ashley Dolberry (Palm Beach Atlantic), Laura Kinderknecht of Washburn and Megan Olsen of Saint Michael’s are joined on the six-person Capital One Academic All-America® Division II Women’s Basketball second team by junior Jen Papich (Gannon) and sophomore Hannah Heeter (Clarion).

Leading the Capital One Academic All-America® third team are seniors Kristen Celsor of Harding, Alex Easterbrook of Fort Lewis and Kelsey Sigl of Colorado Mesa, while sophomore Shanteona Keys (Georgia College) completes the third team.

Capital One Academic All-America® Division II Men's Basketball Team

Junior Michael Dentlinger of Nebraska-Kearney, a second team selection last year, joins Ruh as part of the Capital One One Academic All-America® Division II Men’s Basketball first team this year. Senior Andrew Davis of Texas A&M-Commerce is also part of the first team after picking up third team notice last season. Seniors Luis Leao of Mercyhurst and Alex Novak of Minnesota State-Moorhead round out the Capital One Academic All-America® Division II Men’s Basketball first team.

The five members of the Capital One Academic All-America® Division II Men’s Basketball first team have an average G.P.A. of 3.938.

The only junior on the first team, Dentlinger is a business administration major with a 3.97 G.P.A. A 6-6 forward from Omaha, Neb., he has been named to the All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference first team twice. Honored as the RMAC Freshman of the Year in 2010-11, he is averaging 12.5 points and 4.9 rebounds per game this season. A Division II Bulletin All-American last year, he averaged 14.9 points per game as a sophomore. Closing in on the 1,000-point milestone, he averaged 14.5 points per contest as a freshman for the Lopers.

A finance major with a perfect 4.0 G.P.A., Davis was named as the Lone Star Conference Men’s Basketball Academic Player of the Year in 2011-12. A 6-9 forward from Richardson, Texas, Davis is averaging 8.9 points per game for the Lions. The fourth-leading rebounder in the conference, he is averaging 7.0 rebounds per game with a .568 field goal percentage. He is second in the LSC in field goal percentage. A starter in 20 of 24 games this season, Davis has helped Texas A&M-Commerce post a 14-10 record.

A biology major with a 3.87 G.P.A., Leao ranks among the NCAA Division II leaders with a 19.0 scoring average. A native of Brusque, Brazil, Leao has led the Lakers to a 15-10 record this season. The team’s leading scorer, he also leads Mercyhurst in rebounding with a 6.8 average. With an .829 free throw percentage, he is the team’s top free throw shooter. Honored as the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2011-12, he was also named first team All-PSAC West. In January, he became the 16th player in school history to score 1,000 points.

A biochemistry major with a 3.85 G.P.A., Novak led Minnesota State-Moorhead to a 21-10 record and berth in the NCAA Division II playoffs last season. A native of Oxford, Iowa, Novak has earned second team All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference honors twice. The NSIC rebounding leader with a 9.1 average, he is also the 19th-leading scorer in the conference with a 13.0 average and ranks fourth in field goal percentage (.581). Only the second player in school history with 1,000 career rebounds, Novak has led the Dragons to a 16-10 record this season. The school record holder with 215 career blocked shots, he is a two-time member of the NSIC All-Academic team.

Seniors Cameron McCaffrey of Augustana (SD), Andrew Morris of Coker and Jonathan Morse (Metro State) are joined by juniors Mike Kromka of Clarion and Dominykas Milka (Saint Rose) on the Capital One Academic All-America® Division II Men’s Basketball second team.

The Capital One Academic All-America® Division II Men’s Basketball third team includes seniors Alex Bazzell of Lindenwood, Liam Gibcus (Alaska Anchorage) and Jeff Hart of Colorado Mesa as well as junior David Downs (Seattle Pacific) and sophomore C.J. Hester of West Liberty.
