TOWSON, Md. –  Senior outfielder Brendan Toughey of Baldwin Wallace University leads the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Baseball Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Toughey has been chosen as the Capital One Academic All-America® of the Year award winner for Division III baseball.

The Capital One Division II and III Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2012-13 DII and DIII Academic All-America® teams program.

Enrolled in BW’s Masters of Business Administration in accounting program, Toughey has a 3.93 G.P.A. as a two-time Capital One Academic All-America® selection. He earned second team honors in 2012. A native of East Amherst, N.Y., Toughey batted .411 this season with a school single-season record 66 runs scored, four homeruns and 20 stolen bases in 22 attempts.

A two-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference pick, Toughey finished his career as the Yellow Jackets’ all-time leader with 153 runs to go along with a .356 batting average, 65 RBI and 54 stolen bases. Toughey earned Academic All-OAC honors twice and was recently tabbed to the D3Baseball.com All-Mideast Region First Team.

Toughey is joined on the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Baseball first team by one graduate student, seven seniors and two juniors.


The 11 members of the Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Baseball first team maintain an average G.P.A. of 3.79. 

Of the group, senior outfielder Tyler Heck of Union (N.Y.) is the only other repeat Capital One Academic All-America® selection.

A mechanical engineering major with a 3.93 G.P.A., Heck was named as the Liberty League Player of the Year with a .394 average, three home runs, 26 RBI’s and 38 stolen bases. A native of Clinton, N.Y., Heck ranked among the nation’s leaders in stolen bases and was named ABCA/Rawlings All-New York Region.

Completing the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Baseball first team outfield is junior Nick Fisher of number one-ranked Linfield.

A mathematics major with a 3.83 G.P.A., Fisher has played a crucial role in the Wildcats’ run to the NCAA Division III national championship. He also led top-ranked Linfield to the NCAA Austin regional championship. A native of Lake Oswego, Ore., Fisher earned a spot on the All-Northwest Conference first team and finished the season with six home runs, 47 runs batted in, 15 doubles, four triples and 254 stolen bases. The team’s fourth-leading hitter, he was second on the team with 49 runs scored. He helped Linfield set a school record with a 42 victories.

The 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® Division III baseball first team infield is composed of seniors Nicholas Boggan of California Lutheran, Eric Jensen of Wheaton (Mass.) and Scott Staniewicz of Tufts along with junior Travis Mason of St. Norbert.

A business major with a 3.56 G.P.A., Boggan helped the No. 5-ranked Kingsmen reach the NCAA Condordia (Texas) Regional and finish the season with a 35-9-1 record. A native of Pacific Grove, Cal., Boggan was a two-time selection to the All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference first team. As a senior, Boggan batted .412 with 13 home runs and 67 RBI’s.

A mathematics and economics double-major with a 3.85 G.P.A., Jensen earned Capital One Academic All-District honors for the third time this year. A native of Gorham, N.H., he led Wheaton to its ninth straight 30-win season and a berth to the NCAA New England Regional. Wheaton finished the season with a 32-12 record. The 2013 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Player of the Year, Jensen batted .373 with 31 RBI’s and 18 stolen bases.

An electrical engineering and mathematics double-major with a 3.86 G.P.A., Staniewicz was named to the 2013 New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) All-New England Division III third team. A native of Boca Raton, Fla., Staniewicz batted .357 with 22 RBI’s and 11 stolen bases while helping Tufts post a 22-12 record.

A business administration major and the only member of the Capital One Academic All-America® Division III baseball first team with a perfect 4.0 G.P.A., Mason was named to the D3Baseball.com All-Central Region Team for the second straight season while helping his team to a 27-17 record. A native of De Pere, Wis., Mason batted .327 with four home runs, 36 RBI’s and 12 stolen bases.

Senior Ryan Zakszeski of Johns Hopkins is the catcher on the first team. A materials science and engineering double-major with a 3.58 G.P.A., Zakszeski helped the Blue Jays to a berth to the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional and a 37-10 record. A native of Gilbertsville, Pa., Zakszeski was named to the All-Centennial Conference first team and the D3Baseball.com All-Mid-Atlantic Region first team. Zakszeski batted .358 with seven home runs and 22 RBI’s.

Completing the Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Baseball first team are senior pitchers Ben Heaton of Augustana (Ill.) and Bryce Murphy of Manchester along with graduate student designated hitter Adam Cordova of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

An accounting and finance double major with a 3.84 G.P.A., Heaton helped the Vikings to a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin championship and a 34-11 record. A native of Heyworth, Ill., Heaton posted a 5-2 record with a 2.59 E.R.A. while leading Augustana to a berth in the NCAA Division III regionals.

An accounting major with a 3.55 G.P.A., Murphy has been a key piece during the Spartans’ run to a 39-5-1 record and the NCAA Mideast regional championship. A native of Ossian, Ind., Murphy had a 5-2 record on the mound with a 1.52 E.R.A. and 13 saves. A D3Baseball.com All-Mideast Region selection, Murphy also led Manchester with a .392 batting average and 43 RBI’s.

An exercise & sport science major with a 3.84 G.P.A., Cordova was recently named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Max Sparger Baseball Scholar-Athlete Award winner. A native of Merrill, Wis., Cordova was a two-year captain and a two-time All-WIAC honoree. He batted .321 and led UWL with five home runs and 44 runs batted in. Cordova helped the Eagles post a 21-21 record and reach the WIAC championship game.
