TOWSON, Md. – Graduate student Monte Larsen and senior Breanna Mathes of Morningside College lead the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® College Division men’s and women’s cross country/track and field teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The Capital One College Division Academic All-America® men’s and women’s cross country/track and field teams are comprised of student-athletes from NAIA, Canadian and two-year institutions.
Morningside is the first school ever to sweep both the top men’s and women’s honor in the program.
Larsen, right, was selected as the College Division Academic All-America® of the Year for men’s cross country/track and field while Mathes was named as the Academic All-America® of the Year for women’s cross country/track and field. For Larsen, it marks the second year in a row that he was named as the Academic All-America® of the Year.
Seeking a masters of arts degree in teaching, Larsen owns a 4.00 G.P.A. The Neola, Iowa, native is a six-time Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete. He is the 2013 NAIA indoor national champion in the 800 meters and anchored the Mustangs’ 4x800-relay team as it collected the national titles at the 2012 and 2013 NAIA indoor national meets and the 2013 NAIA outdoor national championships.
He was named as the Most Outstanding Performer at the Great Plains Athletic Conference Meet this season after winning the 400-hurdles. A 12-time NAIA All-American, Larsen
holds five school records and is a part of five school-record relay teams.
A mathematics teaching major with a 3.99 G.P.A.,
Mathes, right, is a repeat Capital One Academic All-America® first-team selection. The Cherokee, Iowa, native is a four-time NAIA Indoor Track and Field and a three-time NAIA Outdoor Track and Field All-American.
She anchored Morningside to the NAIA Indoor 3,200 relay national title in 2013 and to a third-place finish in the same event at the outdoor championship. Mathes, who holds the 1,000 indoor record at Morningside, ran fifth in the 800 run at the indoor championship and was eighth at the outdoor meet.

University, Luke Keogh of St. Gregory’s University, Vincent Krejci of Doane College, Kyle Marshall of Arizona Christian University, Andy Reidsma of Trinity Christian College and Phil Rizzo of University of St. Francis (Ill.).
Larsen is one of five student-athletes who is a repeat selection on the first team. Coy, Fischer, Harris and Johnson were also named to the first team for the second time. Baker, Higgins and Krejci made second team last year while Basterrechea was a third team honoree.
A senior biology major with a 3.95 G.P.A.,
Baker led Oklahoma Baptist to the 2013 NAIA Indoor Track & Field national championship and a runner-up team finish at the 2013 NAIA outdoor meet. The Sapulpa, Okla., native earned NAIA All-American honors in outdoor track with a seventh-place finish in the 5000-meter run with a time of 14:33.69. Baker also captured NAIA All-American honors this year in indoor with the third-place finish in the 5000, finishing with a time of 14:28.89.
A junior biology major with a 3.77 G.P.A.,
Basterrechea is a two-time conference all-academic team member and a 2013 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete. The Gooding, Idaho, native won the 2013 Cascade Collegiate Conference decathlon title and placed second at the NAIA Outdoor National Championships, setting a College of Idaho record for points with 6,991. Basterrechea also holds the school records in long jump, high jump and pole vault.
A senior biology major with a 3.97 G.P.A.,
Coy is a six-time NAIA All-American and qualified for both the NAIA indoor and outdoor national championship meets for the fourth consecutive year. The Hill City, S.D., native was the national runner-up in the 1000-meter run at the 2012 NAIA indoor meet. A three-time all-conference selection in cross country, Coy was selected as Dakota State’s MVP for the second year in a row.
A graduate student seeking a masters in organizational leadership with a 3.86 G.P.A.,
Darmody is the most decorated student-athlete in Saint Ambrose history. The Everett, Wash., native is a seven-time NAIA All-American. Darmody is a seven-time Midwest Collegiate Conference Athlete of the Year and a two-time MCC cross country champion and Harrier of the Year. He holds 11 school records, won 24 individual MCC track titles and is all-conference in 27 total events.
A graduate student seeking a masters in business administration with a 3.75 G.P.A.,
Fischer won the 2013 conference NAIA javelin titles. The Kalispell, Mont., native’s NAIA throw of 219’-06” was six feet better than his conference championship throw. A two-sport athlete as an undergraduate (also played soccer), Fischer was named the Northwest Male Athlete of the Year in 2012.
A senior engineering physics and mathematics double major with a 4.00 G.P.A.,
Harris is a four-time Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete. The Holstein, Iowa, native is a three-time NAIA All-American in the 3200-relay. Harris ran the third leg on the 2012 and 2013 NAIA indoor and 2013 NAIA outdoor 3200-meter relay national championship teams.
A senior math and physics major with a 3.67 G.P.A.,
Higgins is a 2013 NAIA national qualifier in the decathlon, placing ninth with 6,259 points. The Norfolk, Neb., native earned All-American honors in the 2012 in the decathlon. Higgins was a four-time GPAC Scholar-Athlete and a four-time all-conference team member.
A junior secondary education major with emphasis in history and ESL with a 3.91 G.P.A.,
Hinckfoot earned NAIA All-American honors this year in three events – the 110 and 400 hurdles and as a member of the 4x400 relay team. The Colorado Springs, Colo., native won the 110 hurdles at the GPAC championships with a time of 14.52 and placed second in the 400 hurdles at 54.82. Hinckfoot owns Concordia’s (Neb.) school record for the 400 hurdles.
A senior exercise and sports science major with a 3.82 G.P.A.,
Johnson is a three-time NAIA All-American. The Toledo, Ore., native ranked third nationally in the hammer in 2013 with a season-best throw of 193 feet, five inches. Johnson twice won the CCC championship in hammer and once won the conference title in the discus. He helped Concordia (Ore.) to three CCC championships.
Hailing from Dublin, Ireland,
Keogh is a senior criminal justice major with a 3.97 G.P.A. He recorded a season-best time of 17:35.59 in the 5000-meter run at the UTA Bobby Lane Invitational. At the OBU Bison Invitational, Keogh ran the 800 in 2:24.39 and the 1500 in 4:47.33. He was also a captain in the St. Gregory’s men’s soccer team.
A senior biochemistry major with a 3.70 G.P.A.,
Krejci collected NAIA All-American honors in the discus with a throw of 173 feet, four inches. The Crete, Neb., native also recorded shot put distances of 50 feet, 11.25 inches (outdoor) and 49 feet, 11.75 inches (indoor). Krejci earned All-GPAC honors all four years and was a NAIA national qualifier in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

Marshall is a junior secondary education major with an emphasis in social studies and carries a 4.00 G.P.A. He earned all-conference honors in cross country in 2012 as he placed 12th in the league meet. He holds the Arizona Christian record in the 1500 with a time of 4:12.05. Marshall set the school record in the marathon has he placed 10th at the NAIA national championships with a time of 2:33:17.50.
A junior business management and marketing major with a 3.90 G.P.A.,
Reidsma is a two-time NAIA national qualifier in cross country and earned All-American honors in 2012. The Wyoming, Mich., is Trinity Christian’s first-ever All-American in cross country. Reidsma was a 2013 NAIA indoor national qualifier in the mile and an outdoor qualifier in the 1500, 5000 and marathon. He was named the CCAC Track Performer of the Year.
A native of Evergreen Park, Ill.,
Rizzo is a senior history and political science major with a 3.88 G.P.A. He has earned NAIA All-American honors in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track. At NAIA cross country nationals, Rizzo placed eighth with a time of 24:44 as St. Francis captured the national championship. He finished second at the NAIA indoor nationals in the 5000 with a time of 14:22.52.

University, Hannah Helker and Evan Shimanek of Oklahoma Baptist University, Erin Helmuth of Goshen, Stephanie Hescock of Northwest Christian University, Hillary Holt of College of Idaho, Sarah Kortze of Concordia (Neb.) University, Jillian Ourada of Doane, Katie Thurbon of Baker University, and Briana Vander Woude of Dordt College.
Eight of the 15 members on the first team are repeat selections from the 2012 team. Dixson, Helmuth, Hescock and Mathes were named to the first team a year ago, while Beethe, Goring, Shimanek and Vander Woude were on the second team.
Beethe is a senior sport management and exercise science major with a 3.89 G.P.A. The Tecumseh, Neb., was named as a Heart of America Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete in cross country. Beethe was named a Newman Civic Fellow and was Phil Beta Lambda national winner in two events.
A junior cell and molecular biology major with a 3.70 G.P.A.,
Carr has been the three-time Crossroads League champion in the pole vault. The Carmel, Ind., native holds the college record at Bethel in the pole vault and finished as the runner-up at the NAIA outdoor meet in 2013. She has been named an All-American by the NAIA or the NCCAA six times in her career.
Dixson is a senior psychology major with a 3.49 G.P.A. The Battle Ground, Wash., native has been named to the NAIA All-America team 14 times during her career at Concordia (Ore.). She won the shot put and the discus titles at this year’s NAIA Championship, her third and fourth national titles. Dixson has qualified for the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the discus throw.
A senior human factors psychology/systems major with a 3.67 G.P.A.,
Goring is a two-time NAIA All-American. The Ocala, Fla., native was a member of the fastest indoor 1,600 relay and outdoor 400 relay teams in Embry-Riddle history. The three-time all-academic conference performer qualified for the NAIA National Championship in the 100 hurdles. Goring was named to the All-The Sun Conference team 13 times in her career.
Helker is a sophomore with a 3.93 G.P.A. and hasn’t declared a major. The Edmond, Okla., native earned NAIA All-America honors in cross country during in 2012. She was the NAIA national champion in the 800 in 2013 and was a member of the 3,200 relay that earned All-America notice. She helped Oklahoma Baptist win the indoor national title and finish runner up at the outdoor meet.
A senior secondary education and math major with a 3.98 G.P.A.,
Helmuth has been a five-time NAIA qualifier during her career for both the indoor and outdoor race walk competition. The Elkhart, Ind., is a three-time NAIA All-American in race walk. Helmuth also runs cross country for Goshen.
Hescock is a graduate student pursuing a master’s degree in business administration with a 3.90 G.P.A. The Drain, Ore., native was named as the Cascade Conference’s 2013 Scholar of the Year. Hescock won her third CCC Championship in the 10,000 this season and finished runner-up in the event at the NAIA National Championship to earn the third NAIA All-America honor of her career.
Holt is a junior political economy major with a 3.54 G.P.A. Holt was named the Cascade Women’s Athlete of the Year as well as the league’s Women’s Track Athlete of the Year in 2013. The 11-time NAIA All-American qualified for the finals in the 1,500 at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships last week. Holt won NAIA national titles in cross country (2012), outdoor 1,500 (2012 and 2013), and the indoor mile and 3,000 (2013) events.
A senior biology and physical science major with a 3.94 G.P.A.,
Kortze was named as the 2013 State College Female Athlete of the Year in the state of Nebraska by the Lincoln Journal Star. The Rockford, Ill., native is a two-time cross country NAIA All-American who added another All-America honor with her fifth-place finish in the 10,000 meter run at the 2013 Outdoor Championship. She was named as Runner of the Year after winning the 2012 Great Plains Athletic Conference Cross Country Championship.
Michels is pursuing her master’s degree in business administration with a 3.70 G.P.A. The Salem, Ore., native earned her fifth and sixth NAIA All-America honors this year as she finished in third place in the 1,500 and a fifth-place time in the 800.
A senior biochemistry major with a 3.73 G.P.A.,
Ourada was named Doane’s Female Athlete of the Year for the second time in 2013. After missing the 2012 season due to an injury, the Omaha, Neb., native was the national runner-up in the pentathlon at the 2013 NAIA indoor meet and earned NAIA All-America honors in that event at the outdoor meet. Ourada was named to the All-GPAC team 20 times in her career.
Shimanek is a senior pre-physical therapy major with a 3.97 G.P.A. The Hennessey, Okla., native was an NAIA All-American in four events , the indoor and outdoor pole vault; and outdoor 400 and 1,600 relays. She helped the Bison win the NAIA indoor national meet and finish as runner up at the NAIA outdoor championship.
A junior international studies major with a 3.94 G.P.A.,
Thurbon earned her second NAIA All-American honor in 2013 when she finished as national runner-up for a second consecutive season in the pole vault with a mark of 3.55 meters. The Topeka, Kan., native captured her second consecutive Heart of America Athletic Conference title this spring in the pole vault.
Vander Woude is a senior elementary education major with a 3.57 G.P.A. The Clara City, Minn., native was the NAIA national champion this season in both the indoor (3,751 points) and outdoor (5,098) pentathlon events. She also placed fourth at the outdoor meet in the high jump.
