TOWSON, Md. – Senior distance runners Andy Bayer of Indiana University and
Jordan Hasay of the University of Oregon lead the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® Division I men’s and women’s track and field/cross country teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Bayer and Hasay have been chosen as the winners of the Capital One Academ
ic All-America® of the Year award for the Division I Men’s and Women’s track and field and cross country programs, respectively.
Bayer (right) is a biology major who graduated this spring from Indiana University with a 3.60 G.P.A. A native of Leo, Ind., Bayer is the only Hoosiers’ male track and field student-athlete to earn Capital One Division I Academic All-America® honors. He was a second team Capital One Academic All-America® selection in 2011 and 2012.
The 2012 NCAA outdoor 1,500 meter champion, Bayer finished his career as an 11-time All-American including an eighth place finish in the 1,500 at the 2013 national meet. He was a two-time NCAA runner-up, and also earned indoor All-America honors in the distance medley relay and 3,000 meters.
Bayer was a six-time Big Ten champion and became the third runner in Big Ten history to win both the 1,500 and 5,000 meter titles at the 2013 Big Ten Outdoor Championships. He scored 26 points to lead Indiana to the 2012 Big Ten Indoor Track and Field championship. During his career, Bayer earned Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors and was also a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar.
Hasay, a senior middle distance runner with a 3.87 G.P.A. majoring in business administration, was also named as the Capital One Academic All-America® of the Year in 2011. In 2011, she became the first person in the history of the Academic All-America® program to win the national honor as a sophomore. A native of Arroyo Grande, Cal., she is the most decorated runner in school history with 18 combined All-America awards, two national titles and four Pac-12 championship
s.
As a senior, she led Oregon to NCAA championships in both cross country and indoor track, along with the Pac-12 outdoor title. The cross country championship was Oregon’s first national title since 1987. Individually, she placed third at the 2012 NCAA Cross Country championship meet. At the 2013 NCAA Indoor National Championships, she finished second in the 3,000 meters and fourth in the 5,000 meters to score 13 points. At the 2013 NCAA Outdoor championship, Hasay finished third in the 5,000.
As a senior, Hasay set school records in both the 3,000 (8:57.46) and 5,000 (15:40.30) during the indoor season, while setting the Oregon and Pac-12 outdoor records in the 10,000 (32:06.64).
A three-time Capital One Academic All-America® honoree, Hasay is a two-time NCAA champion, winning both the mile and the 3,000 meters at the 2011 NCAA Indoor National Championships. She was the 2011 United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Indoor Track Athlete of the Year and a semifinalist for the Bowerman Award, the highest accolade given to the year's best student-athlete in collegiate track and field. A three-time Pac-12 Athlete of the Year for the cross country program, she was also the 2012 Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year for cross country. She is also the first woman in Oregon history to win four cross country All-America awards from the USTFCCCA.
Capital One Division I Academic All-America® Men’s Track & Field/Cross Country First Team
Bjorn Barrefors of Nebraska and Matt Carey of Rice are the only repeat selections on the Capital One Academic All-America® Division I men’s track and field first team.
Elliot Krause of Wisconsin, Alexander Ziegler of Virginia Tech and Bayer were second team selections in 2012, while Nick Happe of Arizona State, Quentin Mege of Minnesota and Edgar Rivera-Morales of the Arizona were on the third team a year ago.
Barrefors is a four-time Academic All-America® honoree, He earned first team honors in 2011 and 2012, and third team notice in 2010. Bayer, Carey and Krause are three-time Academic All-America® picks.
Rounding out the Capital One Academic All-America® Division I men’s track and field first team are
Peter Callahan of Princeton, Ben DeJarnette of Oregon, Jeremy Drenckhahn of the U.S. Air Force Academy, Christopher Galvin of the U.S. Naval Academy, Stephen Mackell of Dayton, Jeremy Taiwo of Washington and
David Triassi of Florida.
The 15 members of the Capital One Academic All-America® men’s first team have an average G.P.A. of 3.796. The team is comprised of 11 seniors, three graduate students and one junior.
Barrefors, a native of Stockholm, Sweden, had a 3.75 G.P.A. majoring in computer science and a mathematics/physics minor. The NCAA Elite 88 Academic Award winner at the 2010 indoor track and field championships, he was a member of two Big Ten Conference championship teams. He is a six-time All-American and a two-time conference champion in the decathlon (2012) and heptathlon (2011). Barrefors, who was selected as Nebraska’s 2012-13 Male Student-Athlete of the Year, broke the Cornhuskers’ records in both the heptathlon and decathlon during his career. He received the 2012-13 Big Ten’s Medal of Honor, was a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and Big Ten all-academic selection.
An M.B.A. graduate student with a 3.94 G.P.A.,
Carey graduated from Rice with a 4.24 G.P.A. in economics. A native of San Antonio, Texas, Carey was the 2011 Conference USA Scholar Athlete of the Year. He placed 11th in the 10,000 meters at the conference outdoor track and field meet, 31st at the C-USA cross country championships and 35th at the NCAA South Central cross country regional in 2012. Carey was a four-time recipient of the C-USA Academic Medal.
An All-American in both cross country and track for Wisconsin,
Krause has a 3.72 G.P.A. with a double major in mathematics and philosophy. The Appleton, Wis., native helped the Badgers win four Big Ten Conference cross country championships as well as four NCAA Great Lakes Regional titles. A three-time first team All-Big Ten honoree, he earned first team All-Great Lakes Region honors twice. As a senior, he led the Badgers to their fifth national title with an All-America effort at the NCAA Cross Country championship. On the track, Krause contributed to UW's title at the 2012 Big Ten Outdoor Meet with a runner-up finish in the 10,000 meters. He earned All-America honors on the track with his sixth place finish in the 10,000 at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Meet. Krause earned the Big Ten Medal of Honor in 2013 and was a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and seven-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.
Ziegler is an M.B.A. graduate student with a 3.60 G.P.A., after graduating from Virginia Tech with a 3.53 G.P.A. in management. The Dischingen, Germany native competed in only the indoor season and won both the 2013 NCAA and Atlantic Coast Conference weight throw championships. A seven-time NCAA All-American, he claimed back-to-back NCAA hammer throw titles in 2011 and 2012. Ziegler is one of three hammer throwers in the last 25 years to finish in the top three at the national meet in each year of their eligibility. He was the 2013 ACC Men’s Indoor Track and Field Scholar Athlete of the Year and a six-time ACC All-Academic team selection. Ziegler was the 2011 United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Outdoor Field Scholar Athlete of the Year.
The Pac-12 Scholar Athlete of the Year in both cross country and track,
Happe recorded a perfect 4.00 G.P.A. in accountancy and is a member of the Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State. The St. Charles, Mo. native won the Pac-12 outdoor title in the 5,000 meters and also scored in the 1,500. Happe, who earned NCAA All-American honors in the indoor 3,000 meters, was the first individual in school history to post top-five indoor marks in the mile, 3K and 5K. He was a second team All-Pac 12 and All-West Region cross country performer. Happe has been accepted into the prestigious M.B.A. program at the Notre Dame Mendoza College of Business.
A native of Chelles, France,
Mege is a graduate student at Minnesota with a 3.78 G.P.A. after graduating with a 3.92 G.P.A. in mechanical engineering. He was the Big Ten Conference hammer throw champion in 2011 and 2012, and was runner-up in the event in the 2013 outdoor season despite competing with a broken hand. Mege earned second team All-America honors for the Gophers in the hammer throw at the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He set the school record of 221-feet, 5-inches in March 2013. Mege was a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and academic all-conference selection.
A five-time NCAA All-American in the high jump for Arizona,
Rivera-Morales graduated with a degree in industrial engineering and a 3.58 G.P.A. The Agua Prieta, Mexico native holds the school indoor high jump record at 7-feet, 5-inches. An All-Pac-12 performer all four years for the Wildcats, Rivera-Morales claimed his first conference individual title at the 2013 Pac-12 meet. He earned first team NCAA All-America honors in both the indoor and outdoor high jump in 2013.
An NCAA national champion who anchored the Tigers’ distance medley relay team at the 2013 indoor championships,
Callahan graduated from Princeton with a degree in history and a 3.40 G.P.A. The native of Evanston, Ill. is a seven-time Ivy League champion and three-time Ivy League runner-up. Callahan placed sixth in the mile at the 2012 NCAA Indoor Meet. He holds the Princeton record in the 1,000 meters, and both the indoor and outdoor DMR marks. Callahan was named the 2013 Indoor Heps Most Outstanding Performer of the Meet and was named the HepsTrack.com Indoor Track Athlete of the Year.
A native of Mechanicsville, Va.,
DeJarnette maintains a perfect 4.00 G.P.A. with a major in journalism and minors in political science and economics. He received the NCAA’s Elite 89 Award at the 2012 NCAA Cross Country Championships. He earned second place in the Park Pier Invitational (17:53:00, 6,000 meters), before finishing third overall at the Dellinger Invitational, running the 8,000 meter race with a time of 23:49. During the spring, DeJarnette ran his top outdoor 10,000 meter time of 30:42.75 at the Oregon Relays. He earned first team all-Pac-12 academic honors.
The recipient of an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship,
Drenckhahn graduated with a 3.80 G.P.A. in biology from the U.S. Air Force Academy and will be attending medical school at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md. The Plymouth, Minn., native ran second in the 10,000-meter run at the Mountain West Conference Outdoor Meet, posting the fifth-fastest time in Academy history at that distance (29:28.81). In addition to his all-conference selection in the 10K, Drenckhahn also earned all-league honors with a 10th-place finish at the MWC Cross Country Championships.
Anoher recipient of an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship,
Galvin graduated with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A. in mechanical engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy and was the class valedictorian. The Austin, Texas, native became the first Midshipman and fourth league athlete to sweep the Patriot League Scholar Athlete of the Year awards for cross country, indoor track and outdoor track in one academic year in 2012-13. He won the 10,000 meter run at the Patriot League Outdoor Championships with a meet record time of 29:57.26. He has been named to the Superintendent's List and the Commandant's List in all eight of his semesters at the Academy, and ranked first in Overall Order of Merit in the Class of 2013.
Mackell, a native of Findlay, Ohio, maintained a 3.99 G.P.A. with a double major in economics and philosophy at Dayton with a minor in entrepreneurship. A UD Presidential Scholar Athlete, he had his best cross country race of the season at the NCAA pre-nationals, covering the course in a time of 25:39. Mackell was the Flyers’ fourth runner to cross the finish line at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional.
One of the top decathletes in the United States,
Taiwo graduated from Washington with a 3.54 G.P.A. in international studies. The Renton, Wash. native finished third in the decathlon with 7,925 points at the USA Track & Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. He will compete for Team USA in the 2013 IAAF World Track & Field Championships in Moscow on Aug. 10-18. Taiwo posted a PR of 8,239 points to finish second in the decathlon at the 2013 NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. His last NCAA decathlon was in 2011, when he competed despite a torn elbow tendon, then redshirted 2012. Taiwo was edged out by three points to finish second in the decathlon at the 2013 Pac-12 Championships.
Triassi, a native of Jacksonville, graduated cum laude from Florida last spring with a 3.88 G.P.A. in finance and is pursuing a master’s degree in entrepreneurship with a 3.83 G.P.A. He was the 2013 Southeastern Conference indoor champion in the weight throw (70-feet, 10-inches) and earned first team NCAA All-America honors in the event at the national indoor meet. Triassi ranks second all-time at UF in the weight throw and third in the hammer throw outdoors (201-feet, 11-inches).

Oregon teammate Anne Kesselring, Rebecca Addison of Michigan, Christine Babcock of Washington, Jacy Bennett of Oklahoma, Heather Bergmann of Kansas, Juliet Bottorff of Duke, Bethany Buell and Alexa Duling of South Dakota, Brigid Byrne of the U.S. Naval Academy, Sarah Callister of Weber State, Laura Carleton of Louisiana State, Abbey D’Agostino of Dartmouth, Rhiannon Johns of UAB, and
Nicole Look of Colorado.
Hasay and Kesselring are repeat first team selections on the Capital One Academic All-America® Division I women’s team. Bergmann and Johns were second team picks in 2012, while Addison, Bennett, Byrne and Callister were third team honorees last year. Oregon and South Dakota were the only schools with two first team representatives.
The 15 members of the first team have an average G.P.A. of 3.89, with seven honorees boasting perfect 4.00 G.P.A.s. The first team is comprised of 11 seniors, two juniors and two graduate students.
A senior with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A. as a business administration major,
Kesselring is a 12-time All-American. She helped Oregon win its fifth straight Pac-12 championship by running third in the 800 meters and fourth in the 1,500 meters at the 2013 meet. A 2013 NCAA outdoor qualifier in the 1,500 meters, the Nurnberg, Germany, native was part of the eighth-place distance medley relay team as Oregon won the 2013 NCAA Indoor National Championship. The 2011 NCAA and Pac-10 champion in the 800 meters, Kesselring holds school records in the indoor mile (4:32.61) and DMR. She has scored points on all of Oregon's four straight NCAA Indoor championship teams.
Bergmann, a senior chemistry major with a 3.91 G.P.A., is a three-time first team All-American in the javelin throw. She finished sixth in the javelin at the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Championships and third at the 2013 Big 12 Outdoor Championships. A native of Concordia, Kan., Bergmann holds the Kansas school record in the javelin with a career-best mark of 172-9. A three-time member of the Academic All-Big 12 first team, Bergmann notched two victories this season, one at the Kansas Relays and the other at the Emporia Spring Open.
A graduate student with a 4.00 G.P.A. in mathematics,
Johns finished 12th in the 10,000 meters at the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Championships for her second USTFCCCA All-America honor. She also earned All-American honors in the 5,000 meters in 2011. The Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada, native has been selected to the Conference USA All-Academic Team three times. A two-time C-USA champion in the 10,000 meters, Johns is a four-time recipient of the C-USA Academic Medal. The UAB school record holder in the 10,000 meters, Johns is a three-time USTFCCCA All-Academic selection and was awarded Presidential Honors with 4.0 G.P.A. as an undergraduate.
A native of Spring Lake, Mich.,
Addison is a senior with a 3.51 G.P.A. in movement science. She was an honorable mention All-American after finishing 23rd in the 1,500 meters at the 2013 NCAA Outdoor National Championships. She was also a member of the NCAA and Big Ten champion distance medley relay team that set the Michigan school record at the 2013 NCAA Indoor National Championships. A five-time indoor All-American and seven-time Big Ten champion, she was named All-Great Lakes Region in cross country four times.
Bennett, a native of Mesa, Ariz., has a perfect 4.00 G.P.A. with a major in supply chain management. A senior at Oklahoma, she is a three-time Academic All-Big 12 first team honoree and was named to the 2012 USTFCCAA All-Academic team. Bennett scored at the 2012 Big 12 Indoor Championship in the pole vault. She is an eight-time Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll and Sooner Scholar and an eight-time member of the President's Honor Roll.
The 2012-13 Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for Cross Country and Outdoor Track,
Byrne graduated from Navy with a major in English and a 3.83 G.P.A. The Patriot League Outdoor Champion in both the 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters, she holds the Navy 10K record (34:51). The Vienna, Va., native was the Patriot League runner-up in cross country and indoors in the 5,000 meters. Byrne was named to the Patriot League All-Academic Team nine times and to the Superintendent's and Commandant's List eight times in her career.
A nursing major with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A.,
Callister earned All-Big Sky honors three times during her senior season and was also named All-Mountain Region in cross country. She placed second overall and led Weber State to its second straight Big Sky Conference cross country title. Callister also led her team to its first-ever cross country regional title to advance to the NCAA Championship. At the NCAA Championship Meet, she earned the prestigious NCAA Elite 89 Award. A nine-time Big Sky champion, the Ogden, Utah, native is the first female athlete and second athlete ever from Weber State to be a three-time Academic All-America® honoree.
Babcock, a senior with a double major in early childhood and family studies, has a 3.93 G.P.A. A five-time All-American (two in cross country, three in track) at Washington, she finished 11th in the 5,000 meters at the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Championships. She also placed 13th in the mile run at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Championships. A native of Irvine, Cal., Babcock anchored the distance medley relay team to the MPSF title in 2013. The 2011 Pac-12 Cross Country Scholar Athlete of the Year, she has earned six Pac-12 All-Academic first team honors. In cross country, Babcock was named All-Pac-12 three times and was a four-time All-West Region honoree.
A junior with a major in neuroscience,
Bottorff has a 3.71 G.P.A. at Duke. A five-time All-American in cross country and track, she was the 2013 Atlantic Coast Conference champion indoors in the 5,000 meters. The Newark, Del., native was the 2011 NCAA champion outdoors in the 10,000 meters and the ACC record-holder indoors in the 5,000 meters (15:49.45). Bottorff is a three-time All-ACC selection in cross country and was the 2012 ACC Cross Country Scholar Athlete of the Year. She is a three-time member of the Cross Country All-ACC Academic team and an ACC Academic Honor Roll selection. Bottorff will pursue a master's degree in management studies at Duke next year.
Buell, a junior majoring in psychology with a 3.97 G.P.A, was the pole vault champion at the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a championship record-tying vault of 14-7.25. She also earned first team All-America honors for South Dakota after placing fifth in the pole vault at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Championships. The 2013 South Dakota Female Athlete of the Year, she is a three-time All-American outdoors (2011, 2012, 2013) and a five-time conference champion in the pole vault. The St. Louis, Mo., native was named Academic All-Summit League for indoor track.
A graduate student in business administration with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A.,
Carleton was the 2013 SEC Indoor 5,000 meter champion for Louisiana State. A native of Lake Charles, La., she scored 10 points for LSU at the 2013 Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships with fourth-place finishes in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters. She finished 21st in the 5,000 meters at the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Championships and set three LSU school records in 2013, including the 5,000 meters indoors (16:11.98) and outdoors (15:44.41), and 10,000 meters (34:01.65).
D’Agostino, a junior psychology major at Dartmouth with a 3.67 G.P.A., was the 2013 NCAA outdoor champion in the 5,000 meters, her third title of 2013 and the fourth of her collegiate career. She also won the title in both the 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Championship, becoming the first American woman ever to win both in a career. A native of Topsfield, Mass., D’Agostino was the 2013 USTFCCCA National Indoor Female Track Athlete of the Year and Northeast Regional Female Track Athlete of the Year. She was also the 2012 USTFCCCA Division I Cross Country Female Scholar Athlete of the Year, the Northeast Region Women’s Athlete of the Year and the 2012 NCAA women's cross country runner-up.
A graduate student in business administration with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A.,
Duling is the 2013 Walter Byers Scholarship recipient, awarded annually to one male and female student-athlete in recognition of academic achievement and potential for future success. She will receive a renewable $24,000 scholarship while attending medical school at the Arizona College of Medicine. The Gregory, S.D., native earned All-America honors in the 400 meter hurdles and was the 2013 Summit League champion in the event for South Dakota. Duling was also an Olympic Trials qualifier last year.
A senior majoring in applied mathematics with a 4.0 G.P.A.,
Look is a 2013 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipient. An eight-time member of the Dean's List and 4.0 Club, she was named to the MPSF All-Academic for indoor track in 2012 and 2013, and was named Pac-12 All-Academic first team for outdoor track and cross country in 2012 and 2013. A two-time University of Colorado Scholar Athlete of the Year, the Castle Rock, Col., native recorded personal records of 2:20.70 (800M) and 4:38.82 (1500M) in 2012 and raced just twice in 2013.
