TOWSON, Md. – Senior swimmer Curtis Ramsey of Kenyon College and
senior ice hockey standout Teal Gove of Plattsburgh State headline the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® Division III At-Large Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Ramsey and Gove have been selected as the NCAA Division III Academic All-America® of the Year award winners for the men’s and women’s at-large programs, respectively.
The Capital One Division II and III Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2012-13 DII and DIII Academic All-America® teams program.
An economics major with a 3.84 G.P.A.,
Ramsey (pictured, below) graduated from Kenyon as a five-time NCAA Relay Champion and a 15-time NCAA All-American.
He is a recent recipient of an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. A native of Wilmington, Del., Ramsey also helped the Lords to a pair of NCAA Championships and two runner-up finishes during his career.
Ramsey is one of four repeat Capital One Academic All-American® honorees on the Division III Men’s At-Large First Team. Of the four repeat Capital One Academic All-America® honorees, Ramsey is the only one that earned first team honors the last two years.
Of Ramsey’s five national titles, three came in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 2011, 2012 and 2013, and two came in the 400 free relay in 2012 and 2013. Individually, Ramsey finished his career with three NCAA top-five finishes and twice placed third in the nation in the 50-freestyle (2013) and 100-freestyle (2012). The North Coast Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Year in 2013, Ramsey earned a career best six NCAA All-American honors with three in relays and three in individual events.
One of 11 first time selections on the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Women’s At-Large First Team,
Gove (pictured, right) was a third team selection in 2012. A biology major with a 3.83 G.P.A., Gove was the 2013 D3Hockey.com National Player of the Year. A native of Berwick, Ontario, Gove led the nation with 1.67 points per game and was second in the nation with 29 goals scored. Gove played in 115 games and scored 76 goals with 63 assists and 119 points with just four penalties in her career.
2013 Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Men’s At-Large Teams
The three repeat selections that join Ramsey on the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Men’s At-Large first team are all seniors. Overall, the team consists of 10 seniors, four juniors and one sophomore.
The 15 members of the Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Men’s At-Large first team maintain an average G.P.A. of 3.86. Three of the members boast a perfect 4.0 G.P.A.
NCAA tennis singles champion
Adam Putterman of Washington University and two-time volleyball All-American
Matt Hohenberger of Massachusetts Institute of Technology were each named to the second team last season. Kyle Greco of the Plymouth State ice hockey team was a third-team selection in 2012.
An economics & strategy and organizational behavior double-major with a 3.75 G.P.A.,
Putterman won the 2013 NCAA singles championship and was named as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Senior of the Year. A native of Houston, Texas, Putterman finished his storied career with a combined record of 164-70. Named as the 2013 University Athletic Association Most Valuable Player, Putterman was a four-time ITA All-American with two selections each for singles and doubles.
A mechanical engineering major with a 3.80 G.P.A.,
Hohenberger earned American Volleyball Coaches Association All-America honors the last two seasons. A native of St. Louis, Mo., Hohenberger ranked third in the nation this season with 4.10 kills per set and 17th with 0.45 aces per set. Hohenberger finished his career as MIT’s all-time leader with 238 aces and ranks second with 1,495 kills. Off the court, Hohenberger has a provisional patent for the design of a cart that will transport kegs down flights of stairs into basements of bars.
A business administration major with 3.91 G.P.A.,
Greco served as team captain during his senior season for the Plymouth State ice hockey team. He finished his career as a two-time All-Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference first team pick. A native of Hillside, Ill., Greco led the Panthers with 14 goals to help them win to a second-consecutive MASCAC regular season championship. A three-time selection to the MASCAC All-Academic Team, Greco was twice a finalist for the Concannon Award of Greater Boston, given to the top American-born Division II/III player in New England.
Along with Ramsey, four swimmers and one diver were named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Men’s At-Large first team, including his teammate,
Kenyon junior Andrew Chevalier. The other four selections are three seniors in
Miller Douglas of Emory, Christopher Hall of RPI and
Eric Klontz of Carleton, as well as
sophomore Will Guedes of Kalamazoo.
A chemistry major with a 3.94 G.P.A.,
Chevalier posted three top-12 performances at this year’s NCAA Championship Meet. A native of Golden, Colo., Chevalier placed fifth nationally in the 400-yard I.M., sixth in the 500-freestyle and 12th in the 1,650-free. For his career, Chevalier was a nine-time NCAA All-American.
A neuroscience and behavioral biology double-major with a 3.60 G.P.A.,
Douglas won an NCAA Championship in the 200-yard butterfly at Emory. A native of Atlanta, Douglas posted a combined six All-American finishes this season with three each in individual events and relays. An NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipient, Douglas earned 10 All-American certificates in two seasons at Emory.
An electrical engineering major with a 3.99 G.P.A.,
Hall was awarded with RPI’s Ballesian Prize, presented to the senior student-athlete with the highest cumulative G.P.A. A native of Villanova, Pa., Hall turned in three top-10 finishes at the New York State Meet and four top 10 showings in the Liberty League Meet. He also received RPI’s Trevett Award for “outstanding scholarship in electrical and systems engineering.”
A chemistry major with a 3.83 G.P.A.,
Klontz was a two-time NCAA All-American this season at Carleton and the national runner-up in the 50-yard freestyle. A native of Bethesda, Md., Klontz was named the 2013 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Year. He finished his career with three MIAC individual titles. A Capital One Academic All-District pick a season ago, Klontz won the 50-yard freestyle at the MIAC Championship with the third-fastest time (19.66 seconds) in NCAA Division III history.
A business and computer science double-major with a 3.60 G.P.A.,
Guedes capped off his sophomore campaign by earning NCAA Division III Diver of the Year honors for Kalamazoo. A native of Brasilia, Brazil, Guedes won the NCAA Championship in the one-meter dive and placed third on the three-meter board. Guedes also won on both boards at the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championship and was named Most Valuable Diver.

junior Andrew Gear of St. Mary’s (Md.).
Two wrestlers are on the first team as
senior Adam Sheley of Wisconsin-La Crosse and
junior Josh Etzel of Washington & Jefferson were honored.
Volleyball standout Ryan Kramer of Sage Colleges and
fencer Joseph Rafidi of MIT complete the first team.
A biology and classics double-major with a 3.98 G.P.A.,
Chow is a two-time NCAA Elite 89 Award winner for the 2013 NCAA Champion Ephs. A native of Browns Valley, Cal., Chow finished his tennis career with a combined record of 140-50. Chow also has an ITA National Small College Division III doubles crown on his resume.
A triple-major in English, political science and public policy with a perfect 4.0 G.P.A.,
Gear is St. Mary’s all-time leader with a combined 101 victories. A native of Westminster, Md., Gear was named as the 2013 St. Mary’s Male Athlete of the Year as well as the Capital Athletic Conference Co-Player of the Year. Gear is also a three-time CAC All-Academic selection.
A broad field social studies education major with a 3.84 G.P.A.,
Sheley won a wrestling national title at 141 pounds this season. A native of Geneseo, Ill., Sheley finished his career with a 97-15 overall record and was a three-time NCAA All-American. The 2013 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Co-Wrestler of the Year, Sheley was fifth in the nation at 133 pounds in 2011 and finished sixth in 2012. He was also the 2013 WIAC Wrestling Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
A biochemistry major with a 3.81 G.P.A.,
Etzel became W&J’s first wrestling All-American since 2002 with a sixth-place finish at 157 pounds this year. A native of Elizabeth, Pa., Etzel is a two-time national qualifier and a two-time Presidents’ Athletic Conference champion. The school single-season record holder with 37 wins in 2012-13, Etzel has twice received academic recognition from the National Wrestling Coaches Association.
A physical education major with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A.,
Kramer was the first recipient of Sages’ Dean Sharon Robinson Senior Scholar-Athlete Award. A native of Delmar, N.Y., Kramer finished his volleyball career in Sage’s top 10 for both kills and blocks in just two seasons. Kramer was also a two-time Skyline Conference All-Academic pick.
An electrical engineering and computer science double-major with a 4.00 G.P.A.,
Rafidi was the only Division III epee qualifier at the 2013 NCAA Championship. A native of Los Angeles, Cal., Rafidi posted a 57-10 record and earned All-America Honorable Mention honors as MIT’s best epee performer since 1995. Rafidi was also named to the Northeast Fencing Conference All-Star first team.
2013 Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Women’s At-Large Teams
Seniors Molly McShane of MIT, Julie Pinter of Baldwin Wallace and
Breanna Stillo of Carnegie Mellon are the three repeat selections on this year’s Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Women’s At-Large first team.
Three of the 15 members of the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Women’s At-Large Team maintain a 4.00 G.P.A., and the team has a whole carries an average G.P.A. of 3.888.
A mechanical engineering major with a 3.90 G.P.A.,
McShane is a field hockey standout who is a three-time Capital One Academic All-America® At-Large honors that includes first-team status in 2012. A native of Lake Bluff, Ill., she is a four-time All-American and was the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) New England Player of the Year twice. The New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Athlete of the Year and a four-time All-NEWMAC first team selection, McShane was eighth in the nation in assists per game (0.85) as a senior.
A communications disorders major with a 3.83 G.P.A.,
Pinter is a now a two-time Capital One Academic All-America ® first team pick. A native of Broadview Heights, Ohio, Pinter is a six-time NCAA All-American diver. She was the 2012 BW Outstanding Senior Female Athlete, the 2013 Ohio Athletic Conference Clyde Lamb Award recipient and a six-time OAC champion. Pinter is the school record-holder in all four diving events and her top national finish came via a runner-up performance at the 2012 NCAA Championship.
A biomedical and chemical engineering major with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A.,
Stillo is a two-time Capital One Academic All-America® At-Large first team honoree. A native of West Caldwell, N.J., Stillo won the 2013 University Athletic Association Championship as part of the 200-yard medley relay. Stillo set three school records this season in the 50-freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke and with the 400 medley relay. Stillo is also a recipient of a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Researcher Award.
Senior tennis player Kristin Lim of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps is making her first appearance on the Capital One Academic All-America® At-Large Women’s first yeam after being selected to the second team in 2012. An economics and accounting double major with a 3.73 G.P.A., Lim is a two-time NCAA Division III singles champion and was named as the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year three times. A native of Honolulu, Hawaii, Lim led the Athenas to a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championship and finished second in the singles and doubles portion of the championship.
Seniors Brooke Hamilton of Baldwin Wallace and
Lindsey Hjelm of Gustavus Adolphus are also making their first appearance on the Capital One Academic All-America® At-Large Women’s first team. They were named to the third team last year.
An English major with a 3.93 G.P.A.,
Hamilton is the lone golfer on the first team. A two-time National Golf Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete and a 2012 NCAA Elite 89 finalist, she is a native of Cleveland, Ohio. Hamilton turned in her best season in 2012-13 with an 82.71average per round..
A biology major with a 3.79 G.P.A.,
Hjelm joins Gove as ice hockey representatives on the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® At-Large Women’s first team. A native of North Oaks, Minn., Hjelm was named as the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year and D3hockey.com West Region Player of the Year. She was named as a first-team All-American by both the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) and D3hockey.com. A four-time All-MIAC selection and the MIAC’s Shelia Brown Award winner, Hjelm holds school records for games played (120) with total of 110 career points on 48 goals and 62 assists.
Along with Pinter and Stillo, three other swimmers were named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Women’s At-Large first team.
Seniors Anna Dobben and
Ann Wolber of Emory join
junior Alex Ladd of Johns Hopkins as swimmers on the first team.
An English major with a 3.77 G.P.A.,
Dobben led Emory to the 2013 NCAA Division III championship with six All-American performances. She was also part of two national championship relay teams. A native of Flossmoor, Ill., Dobben finished her Emory career with four NCAA Championships and 12 All-America certificates.
A biology major with a 3.69 G.P.A.,
Wolber was also a member of two NCAA Champion relay teams for the Eagles, She was part of the 200-free relay team that set the Division III record. A native of Sterling, Ill., Wolber finished her career with six NCAA championships, the second-most in the program's history. She was a seven-time All-Americans. Wolber was also awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
A molecular and cellular biology double-major with a 3.97 G.P.A.,
Ladd was a member of the 2013 NCAA champion 800-yard freestyle relay team at Johns Hopkins. A native of North Palm Beach, Fla., Ladd is a five-time NCAA All-American, a five-time UAA Champion and the recipient of an NCAA Elite 89 Award. Ladd is also a member of the TriBeta National Biological Honor Society.
Junior Katie Cecil of Carnegie Mellon joined Lim as the other tennis player on the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Women’s At-Large first team.
A neuroscience major with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A.,
Cecil is the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Arthur Ashe Jr. Award winner for Leadership and Sportsmanship in Division III. A native of Huntington Beach, Cal., Cecil won the NCAA Elite 89 Award during 2013 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis championship. Cecil has won 37 singles matches and 36 doubles matches during her two-year career with the Tartans after transferring from Tulane University.
McShane joins two other field hockey players who were selected to 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Women’s At-Large first team,
seniors Shelby Hall of Rochester and Shelly Milks of Lynchburg.
A molecular genetics major with a 3.93 G.P.A.,
Hall was a unanimous first-team All-Liberty League selection and earned National Field Hockey Coaches Association second-team all-region honors. A native of Hamburg, N.Y., Hall scored 17 goals and added nine assists as a senior. Hall finished her career with 93 points, the fourth-highest total in school history.
An exercise physiology major with a 3.97 G.P.A.,
Milks was the three-time Old Dominion Athletic Conference Player of the Year and won the ODAC Scholar Athlete of the Year award twice. She was also a three-time NFHCA All-American. A native of Gloucester, Va., Milks earned an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship and was named as a 2012 NFHCA Gladiator SGI/NFHCA Division III Scholar of Distinction. Milks scored 11 goals with 11 assists for 33 points in her senior season.
Senior Shawna Ferris of Wooster is the only lacrosse player on the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Women’s At-Large first team. A communication studies major with a 3.98 G.P.A., Ferris was a two-time first-team and an overall four-time All-North Coast Athletic Conference selection at goalkeeper. A native of Boxborough, Mass., Ferris led the Fighting Scots to the NCAC championship and ranked 11th in Division III with a .525 save percentage. Ferris is the treasurer of the school's communications club, a writing center tutor and a member of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee.
Junior Courtney Benson of Hamline is the only gymnast on the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Women’s At-Large first team. An accounting and economics double-major with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A., Benson is a three-time All-American in the floor exercise, vault and all-around events. A native of Winona, Minn., Benson is an All-MIAC selection.
