TOWSON, Md. – Senior shortstop
Bailey Vrazel of Texas Woman’s University headlines the 2014 Capital One Academic All-America® Division II Softball Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The Capital One Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2013-14 Division II Academic All-America teams program.
Vrazel, a native of Danbury, Texas, has been named as the Capital One Academic All-America® of the Year for Division II. A kinesiology major with a 4.00 G.P.A., she leads the first team and is a three-time Academic All-America® honoree (second team in 2012; first team in 2013 and 2014).
Vrazel finished her career at Texas Woman’s as a four-time Lone Star all-conference honoree after starting all 53 games during the 2014 season. She led the Lone Star conference for the fourth year in a row with 44 stolen bases and finished her career four stolen bases shy of tying the NCAA career stolen base mark (246).
She led the Pioneers in runs scored (54), hits (73) and assists (107), while maintaining a .376 batting average at the plate and .945 fielding percentage at shortstop. Texas Woman’s finished the season with a 34-19 record after advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the third season in a row.
Vrazel is one of three members of the Capital One Academic All-America® first team who earned Academic All-America® honors in the past.
Four of the 11 members of the Capital One Academic All-America® Division II softball first team have a perfect 4.00 GPA, while the first team combined to post an average G.P.A. of 3.89.
Pitcher
Kayla Cox of fifth-ranked University of Tampa earned her second appearance on the Capital One Academic All-America® team following a third-team selection in 2013. The communications major with a 3.48 G.P.A., was recently named the Daktronics Division II South Region Pitcher of the Year for the second season in a row. During the 2014 campaign, she posted an 18-3 record with a 0.84 ERA and 16 complete games. She struck out 210 batters and walked 38 in 159.0 innings of work.
For her career, Cox compiled a 59-11 record with a 0.67 ERA and 756 strikeouts during 492.0 career innings of work in the circle. The Riverview, Florida, native is Tampa’s all-time program record holder in career ERA, strikeouts per seven innings pitched (10.76), while ranking second in shutouts (39) and total strikeouts.
West Texas A&M University shortstop
Alyssa Lemos is making her second appearance on the Capital One Academic All-America® team after a second-team selection, last year. Lemos is part of a No. 1 ranked West Texas A&M squad that has posted a 56-7 record and will play in the NCAA Division II Softball Championship in Salem, Virginia, May 22-26.
The pre-med major with a 3.90 G.P.A. has been one of the top Division II shortstops in the country this season and was recently selected to the NFCA All-South Central Region squad. Having starting all 63 games this season, she is batting .335 with 71 runs scored, 62 hits, 13 doubles, 12 home runs, 44 RBI and a .632 slugging percentage. The Grapevine, Texas, native is the all-time Division II career leader in walks, entering the College World Series with 177 while starting all 242 games of her career. She was a first-team All-Lone Star Conference selection while being named to the league's Golden Glove team for the second-straight season.
Senior
Haley Kolmerten of Urbana University is the second pitcher on the Capital One Academic All-America® Division II first team. The senior from West Lafayette, Ohio, finished her career with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A. with a dual degree in management and entrepreneurship, graduating from the university’s honors program.
Kolmerten is the first Urbana student-athlete to earn Athlete and Student-Athlete of the Year honors in Blue Knights’ athletics department history. A four-time all-conference honoree, Kolmerten was recently named to the Daktronics Atlantic Region second team. She capped of her stellar career for the Blue Knights with a single-season program record with 17 wins in 2014, while also setting new program standards in appearances (34), starts (26), complete games (19), shutouts (6), innings pitched (183.1) and strikeouts (184). Her 543 career strikeouts are more than double the next player on Urbana’s all-time career strikeout list.
The catching representative on the Capital One Academic All-America® Division II first team is
Natalie Wideman from California University of Pennsylvania. The senior 3.92 G.P.A. sport management major from Mississauga, Ontario, helped her No. 12-ranked Vulcans to a 37-7 record in 2014 and a trip to the NCAA Tournament after winning the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships for the first time since 2000.
As a senior, Wideman set career highs and led the PSAC with a .454 average, 49 runs scored and a .535 on-base percentage. She also ranked fourth in the league with 22 stolen bases and a .692 slugging percentage, while catching every inning this season. Wideman, who became the 11
th player in school history with 200 hits, finished her career among the top 10 in program history in batting average, runs scored and stolen bases.
Nicole Hagenah of No. 20-ranked LIU Post is the next infield representative on the Capital One Academic All-America® Division II first team. The 3.73 G.P.A. criminal justice major is the second member of the first-team to have her squad headed to the NCAA Division II Softball Championship in Salem, Va., with a 50-9 overall record.
The shortstop from Commack, New York, recently was selected to the NFCA All Region first-team squad and was a Daktronics All-Region second-team selection. Hagenah has etched her name in the Pioneer record books this year, setting a new single-season high for runs scored (67), to go along with career marks for runs scored (206), walks (109), total bases (482), on-base percentage (.491) and slugging percentage (.687). In addition, she has the opportunity to break the career records for hits (294), doubles (56), RBI (216) and home runs (48).
The final infield representative on the Capital One Academic All-America® Division II first team is
Kendra Sancet of Texas Woman’s University. The first baseman and teammate of 2014 Capital One Academic All-America of the Year award winner Vrazel was recently named to the NFCA All Region first-team for the second year in a row and to the Daktronics All-South Central Region team.
The native of Magnolia, Texas, led the Lone Star Conference with 21 home runs in 2014 and was the Pioneers’ team leader with a .432 batting average, 65 RBI, .897 slugging percentage and a .528 on-base percentage. The junior with a 3.95 G.P.A. in mathematics, was also a Lone Star Conference first-team all-conference honoree.
Edinboro University’s
Brenna Cosgrove is the first of three outfield selections on this year’s Capital One Academic All-America® Division II first team, earning her place on the team with a 3.97 G.P.A. as a health and physical education major.
Cosgrove earned multiple accolades during her senior season at Edinboro, including selections to the NFCA All-Region first team, All-PSAC West first team and the Daktronics All-Region second team. She helped the Fighting Scots to the first berth in the PSAC Championship since 2010 as she led her squad with a .407 batting average, 55 hits, 19 multiple-hit games and a program-record 24 stolen bases. The Fairview, Pennsylvania, native was named the 2014 Edinboro Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was the recipient of the Outstanding Future Professional Award, awarded by the Pennsylvania State Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
University of Central Missouri’s
Alex Groeger is the second member of the outfield for this year’s Capital One Academic All-America® Division II first team. The marketing major from Fort Collins, Colorado, finisher her four-year career with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A.
Groeger was one of two Central Missouri players to play in all 48 games for the Jennies this season, registering a career-high .354 average. She became the newest member of the Jennies' 100-hit club during the regular season. Her 28 RBI were third most on the team, while she ranked second on the squad with 37 runs scored.
Rounding out the Capital One Academic All-America® Division II first team outfield is Young Harris College’s
Sydnee Weaver. The junior, who hails from Sylvania, Georgia, is maintaining a perfect 4.00 G.P.A. as a biology major.
Weaver led the Mountain Lions in 2014 with a .396 batting average, 63 hits, 42 runs scored and 21 stolen bases. The All-Peach Belt Conference honoree was third on the team with a .455 on-base percentage and .447 slugging percentage. She added six doubles and a triple, as she drove in nine runs as a leadoff hitter. Weaver, who led the Mountain Lions with 21 multi-hit games in 2014, ranked third in the Peach Belt in hits, fourth in stolen bases and batting average, fifth in runs scored and on-base percentage, seventh in walks (15) and 18th in total bases (71).
The final member of the Capital One Academic All-America® Division II first team is designated player Kayla Saliga from Wingate University, who finished her playing career with a 3.83 G.P.A. as a chemistry major.
The native of Asheboro, North Carolina, earns NFCA All-Region accolades for the second time in her career this season, as well as being named to the Daktronics All-Region second team. The first team All-SAC selection hit a team-best .372 in 2014 with 13 doubles, seven homers, 30 RBI and 26 runs scored. She had a .421 on-base percentage and .570 slugging percentage. Saliga finished 10th in the SAC in doubles, ranking 11th in batting average and homers.
