AUSTIN, Texas – Senior forward Haley Hatcher of Ouachita Baptist University and
senior goalkeeper Johannes Sterobo of Northwood (Mich.) University headline the 2015 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division II Men’s and Women’s soccer teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Hatcher has been selected as the recipient of the Academic All-America® of the Year award for Division II women’s soccer, while Sterobo won the award for men’s soccer.
The CoSIDA Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2015-16 Division II Academic All-America® teams program.
A mass communications major with a 4.00 G.P.A.,
Hatcher is a three-time Great American Conference Offensive Player of the Year. A forward, she led the Tigers to an 11-7 record as a senior, finishing with 19 goals and two assists for 40 points while starting all 18 matches.
The native of Maumelle, Arkansas, is a three-time first team All-GAC selection and was named the GAC Offensive Player of the Week seven times in her career. Her 55 goals in 56 games are a GAC record and she ranks third among active Division II players in goals per game and fourth in points per game. She finished with 118 career points.
Hatcher has been named Ouachita Baptist’s Female Student Athlete of the Year and Scholar Athlete of the Year twice. In addition, she was a 2014 Daktronics/Division II Conference Commissioners Association third team All-American and was selected to the 2014 NSCAA Scholar All-South Region Team. She was a 2013 NSCAA All-Central Region second team pick.
Sterobo is a senior from Odense, Denmark. He has a 3.99 G.P.A. and is an international business major. He is now a two-time 2015 CoSIDA Academic All-America® after earning third team honors in 2014. He was recently named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Goalkeeper of the Year. He earned second team All-GLIAC accolades a year ago.
He led ninth-ranked Northwood to its first GLIAC championship. That was followed by a 3-1 win over Saginaw Valley State University in the second round of the NCAA Tournament second round to reach the third round, where they will face Rockhurst University.
Northwood owns a 17-1-1 record, with Sterobo seeing all but 57 minutes in goal. In addition to the 17-1-1 record, he has a 0.48 goals-against average with 12 shutouts and a .864 save percentage. He ranks first in the GLIAC and second in Division II in shutouts, and first in the conference and sixth nationally in save percentage. He also paces the GLIAC in goals against average and wins. He has allowed just nine goals all season.
For his career, Sterobo ranks second among active Division II players with 29 shutouts. He holds eight Northwood goalkeeping records, including career wins (45), shutouts, and save percentage.
Academic All-America® Women’s Soccer Division II Team
Twenty-two of the 33 members of the 2015 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division II women’s soccer teams have at least a 3.90 G.P.A., with 11 student-athletes maintaining a perfect 4.00 G.P.A. The 11 members of the first team have an average G.P.A. of 3.91.
Gannon University’s Mani Brueckner is now a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-America® selection. The senior midfielder was a third team choice a year ago after earning second team honors in 2013. She moved up to the first team this year. She has a 3.70 G.P.A. as an engineering major and is a native of Valencia, Pennsylvania. She was named to the first team All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference team for the fourth consecutive season and was selected the PSAC Athlete of the Year for the third straight year in 2015. She led the Lady Knights in goals (18), assists (8), and points (44). Gannon was ranked number one in the country for several weeks and ended the year with an 18-3-0 record, reaching the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The four-year starter holds the Gannon career record for points (137) and assists (45) while ranking second in career goals (46). She has been named the Daktronics Atlantic Region Player of the Year twice.
Shayla Page of Seattle Pacific University earned first team CoSIDA Academic All-America® honors for the second straight year. She is a communications major with a 3.95 G.P.A. A native of Redmond, Washington, the senior defender anchored a defense that posted nine shutouts and allowed just 17 goals. The Falcons finished with a 14-5-2 record and were eliminated in the NCAA West Region semifinals. She scored one goal this season and was a four-time All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference selection, including earning first team honors in 2015.
Junior midfielder Marti Corby of Grand Valley State University moved up from the second team to earn a spot on the 2015 CoSIDA Academic All-America® team. She has a 3.60 G.P.A. as a pre-med major. The Lakers are currently 20-1-0 and have advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
The 2014 NSCAA Division II Player of the Year and a two-time Daktronics first team All-American, Corby currently ranks first in Division II in assists (16), second in total points (62), and third in goals (23). She is a three-time All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference first team selection, and was named the 2015 GLIAC Offensive Player of the Year.
The CoSIDA Academic All-America® second team features five repeat honorees. Lenoir-Rhyne University senior Brianna Belsky was a first team selection a year ago. She is a chemistry major with 3.94 G.P.A. A native of Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, she earned All-South Atlantic first team accolades for the third time while leading a Bears’ defense that had 10 shutouts and allowed just 15 goals while going 12-4-2.
Adelphi University’s Taylor Groth, Audrey Adkison of Harding University, and Minnesota State University Mankato’s Kory Kronforst earned second team CoSIDA Academic All-America® honors for the second straight year. Groth is a senior defender from Setauket, New York. A psychology major, she has a 3.94 G.P.A. She has helped the Panthers to an 18-2-2 record and a berth in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. She became the first Adelphi player to be named the Northeast-10 Conference Defensive Player of the Year.
Adkison is a health & kinesiology major with a 4.00 G.P.A. The senior midfielder is from Gorham, Maine and helped Harding to a 15-4-2 record and a berth in the NCAA Central Region field. She became a three-time All- Great American Conference honoree after earning a spot on the first team. She finished with three goals and nine assists for 15 points.
Kronforst is a senior forward from Cary, Illinois. She maintains a 3.80 G.P.A. as a special education major. She scored both goals in a 2-0 win over Augustana (S.D.) University to lead the Mavericks to the NCAA Tournament third round with an 18-1-2 record. The 2013 and 2015 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Offensive Player of the Year and a three-time All-NSIC first team selection, she leads the Mavericks with 48 points on 19 goals and 10 assists. She is the NSIC career record-holder in points.
Cedarville University’s Jacoby Ziegler is a senior forward from Wellington, Ohio, with a 3.72 G.P.A. as a nursing major. Ziegler, who was a CoSIDA Academic All-America® first team honoree in 2013, is ranked seventh in NCAA Division II in goals (19) and points (46) while leading Cedarville to the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Championshp and the league’s first-ever NCAA automatic berth in 2015. Ziegler is Cedarville’s all-time leader in goals (59) and second in points (139).
The rest of the CoSIDA Academic All-America® first team includes Columbus State University’s Maylyn Parsons, Shelby Rolling and Nicole Corcione, Grand Valley State University’s Clare Carlson, Breanne Hatfield of Minot State University, Maria Marti Bartis of Clayton State University, and Embry-Riddle University’s Andrea Froshaug.
The CoSIDA Academic All-America® second team includes Olivia Lynch of Embry-Riddle, American International College’s Romina Bell, Chrissy Hollan of Bloomsburg University, Ally Barys of Georgia College, Bella Mitrevski of Roberts Wesleyan College, and University of North Alabama’s Chloe Richards.
The CoSIDA Academic All-America® third team features Upper Iowa University’s Kaitlyn Emanuel, Edinboro University’s Reilee DuPratt, Courtney Kozak of Ohio Dominican University, Grand Valley State’s Shannon Quinn, Tusculum College Carlie Thornber, Wingate University’s Kaitlyn Brunworth, Ashely Burton of Quincy University, Anna Hoffman of Trevecca Nazarene University, Barry University’s Lavinia Nkomo, Bemidji State University’s Sarah Stram, and LIU Post’s Susanne Vistnes.
Academic All-America® Men’s Soccer Division II Team
Fourteen of the 33 members of the 2015 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division II men’s soccer teams have at least a 3.90 G.P.A., with four student-athletes maintaining a perfect 4.00 G.P.A. The 11 members of the first team have an average G.P.A. of 3.90.
University of Charleston (W.Va.)’s Conor Branson is one of the three repeat performers from last year’s CoSIDA Academic All-America® team. A graduate student from Pontefract, England, Branson is an MBA major with a 3.98 G.P.A. He has helped the Golden Eagles advance to the third round thanks to a 4-2 win over Notre Dame (Ohio) College in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The defender was recently named the 2015 Mountain East Conference Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season while leading Charleston to a second consecutive league title. He has contributed four goals and four assists on offense while helping the Golden Eagles post a league-best 11 shutouts while holding opponents to 11 goals. He was 2014 first team All-American and was the NCAA’s “Elite 89” recipient a year ago.
Ryan Lawhead of Missouri University of Science & Technology was also a first team CoSIDA Academic All-American® in 2014. A defender, he has a 3.93 G.P.A. as a petroleum engineering major. He helped the Miners finish with a 10-8-2 record in 2015.
A senior from O’Fallon, Illinois, Lawhead broke the single-season assist record with nine and moved into a tie for sixth place in career assists with 15. He ended his career with a pair of goals. He also was a key component of a defense back line that allowed just 21 goals and recorded seven shutouts. He was a second team All-Great Lakes Valley Conference selection.
The final 2014 first-team repeat selection is midfielder Jonathan Lupinelli of the Southern New Hampshire University. Lupinelli is a graduate student who is a marketing major with a 3.95 G.P.A. As an undergrad, the native of Mont de Marsan, France was an international business major with a 3.84 G.P.A.
The third-ranked Penmen, now 19-1-0, are another third round-bound team following a 3-0 victory over Merrimack in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. They are making their eighth straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Southern New Hampshire previously won its fourth straight Northeast-10 Conference championship.
Lupinelli was a first team All-Northeast-10 selection, marking his third time as an all-conference pick. He has a eight assists, which ranks third in the conference, and has helped the Penmen register seven shutouts and allow just 10 goals.
Lupinelli is one of two repeat selections players from Southern New Hampshire.
Sebastian Stezewski was picked to the second team after earning third team accolades in 2014. A senior from New Britain, Connecticut, he has a 3.60 GPA while majoring in information technology as a graduate student and justice studies as an undergraduate.
Stezewski earned a spot on the All-Northeast 10 second team, his second time as an all-conference honoree. He ranks second on the team in goals (11) and points (25). He has 21 career goals and 18 career assists for 60 career points.
The first team CoSIDA Academic All-America® team also includes Richard Garvey of Colorado School of Mines, who was named to the third team a year ago. The senior midfielder is a native of Portmore, Jamaica and has a 3.92 G.P.A. as an electrical engineering major.
The Orediggers are yet another team that has reached the NCAA’s Round of 16. They have a 17-0-3 and recently won the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championship for the second straight year. He was named to the 2015 All-RMAC first team and was a 2014 NSCAA All-region third team selection. Garvey leads the team in goals with 12 and is second in points with 25.
The final repeat selection from the 2014 CoSIDA Academic All-America® team is St. Edward’s University Kevin Leib. A senior goalkeeper, he is an accounting major with a 3.75 G.P.A. In 2014, he was a first team selection, and is now a two-time honoree after being named to the second team.
Leib helped the Hilltoppers to a 15-3-2 record, with their season coming to an end with a loss to Colorado School of Mines in the NCAA Tournament second round. A native of Dallas, Texas, he was a first team All-Heartland Conference pick after leading the Hilltoppers to the conference title. He leads Division II in goals against average at 0.43, and is third in the country in save percentage (.873). He finished with 13-3-2 record with 10 shutouts, allowing just eight goals.
The rest of the 2015 CoSIDA Academic All-America® first team includes Cameron Burrows of Wingate, Josh Smith of Bloomsburg University, Florida Tech’s Trey Collins, Northwest Nazarene University’s Erik Anderson, Corey Brown of Queens (N.C.) University, and LIU Post’s Per Forgaard.
The 11-member second team includes St. Edward’s Ryan Dendinger, Sam Glawe of Colorado State University-Pueblo, Seattle Pacific’s Davis Karaica and Jordan Kollars, Joe Woodley of Wilmington (Del.) University, Lewis Hilton of Young Harris College, Harding University’s Josiah Ireland, Cedarville University’s Connor Gilmour, and Gui Machado of Limestone College.
The third team is comprised of Nick Zucco of Southern New Hampshire, J.P. DiTommaso of the University of New Haven, Merrimack College’s Julio Leon Garcia, University of California San Diego’s Kuba Waligorski, University of Indianapolis’ Jacob Meyer and Brendon Widau, Northeastern State University’s Brenden Bombardier and Crosby Lee, Jermaine Metz of Palm Beach Atlantic University, Cedarville’s Jared Newman, and Jonathan Spicher of Tusculum College.
