AUSTIN, TEXAS – Senior outfielder Sydnee Weaver of Young Harris College headlines the 2015 Capital One Academic All-America® Division II Softball Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Weaver has been selected as the recipient of the Academic All-America® of the Year award for Division II softball.
The Capital One Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2014-15 Division II Academic All-America® teams program.
A biology major with minors in chemistry and psychology,
Weaver has a 4.00 G.P.A. and is now a two-time first team Capital One Academic All-America® selection. She also received the Peach Belt Conference Elite 15 Award. The award is modeled on the NCAA's Elite 89 and honors the student-athletes competing in the championship event with the highest cumulative GPA. Weaver is a two-time selection to the All-Peach Belt Academic Team and a two-time PBC Presidential Honor Roll Gold Scholar. Recognized as Young Harris' Luke Rushton '42 Scholar-Athlete Award, awarded to the senior student-athlete with the highest GPA, Weaver also recently received the college's Outstanding Biology Senior Academic Award and Senior Research Award.
A native of Sylvania, Georgia, Weaver led Young Harris to a 31-18 record, its most wins as an NCAA program. The Mountain Lions climbed from ninth in the Peach Belt Conference in 2014 to fifth this year. Weaver finished second on the team in batting average (.404), runs scored (39), hits (57) and total bases (77). She led the Mountain Lions, who finished the season ranked eighth in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Rankings, in on-base percentage (.475), doubles (12), triples (4) and stolen bases (29). She is currently 29th in NCAA Division II in stolen bases per game (0.66). She leads the PBC in stolen bases, second in triples, fourth in on-base percentage, sixth in batting average, and eighth in runs.
As a 2015 NFCA All-Southeast Region First Team selection, Weaver was one of three Mountain Lions named to the first team, marking the first time Young Harris has had a first team honoree. She also received second team Daktronics/Division II CCA All-Southeast Region honors. Weaver concluded her career with a .386 career batting average while playing in 195 games. That included 32 doubles and nine triples, along with 78 stolen bases in 92 attempts. She scored 139 runs and drove in 55 runs.
Fifteen of the 33 members of the 2015 Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA Division II softball teams have at least a 3.90 G.P.A., including nine student-athletes who maintain a perfect 4.00 G.P.A. The 11 members of the first team have an average G.P.A. of 3.90.
Weaver is one of six repeat performers on the 2015 Capital One Academic All-America® Division II Softball Team.
Caroline Sagrera of Spring Hill College and T
exas Woman's University's Kendra Sancet joined Weaver on the first team a year ago.
Sagrera, one of only two juniors on the 2015 Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA Division II softball first team, is a pre-health major with a 3.90 G.P.A. A native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, she led the Badgers to a 36-7 record in their debut season in NCAA Division II. That included a perfect 18-0 record in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Sagrera posted a 26-6 record with a 1.39 ERA. In 212 innings, allowing just 99 hits and 61 walks while striking out 350. She led Division II in strikeouts at the end of the regular season and currently ranks third, along with standing second in strikeouts per seven innings. The right-hander held opposing hitters to a .135 average.
Sagrera tossed two no-hitters in 2015. She is a two-time NAIA first team All-American and was named the 2013 Southern States Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year, striking out an NAIA-record 483 batters that year. In 128 career starts she has 118 complete games and 45 shutouts with seven no-hitters. Her career record is 104-28 with 1,267 career strikeouts in 895 innings.
Sancet was one of four infielders named to the first team. A senior from Magnolia, Texas, she has a 3.93 G.P.A. as a mathematics major. The first baseman was recently named to both the NFCA All-South Central Region and Daktronics/Division II CCA All-South Central Region first teams for the third straight year. Sancet was also named to the All-Lone Star Conference team for the fourth straight season this year including a first team nod for the second consecutive season. She earned Daktronics All-America first team and NFCA All-America second team honors last season.
She helped the Pioneers to a 28-22-2 finish while leading the Lone Star Conference with 22 doubles. She was the Pioneers' team leader with a .805 slugging percentage, .518 on-base percentage, 13 home runs and 55 RBI. Sancet ranked second on the team in batting average (.409). Sancet started all 224 games at first base during her four years at TWU and finished her career as the Pioneers' all-time career leader in home runs (55), RBI (223), grand slams (5), total bases (473), slugging percentage (.699) and tied for first in walks (87).
After earning third-team Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA Division II honors a year ago,
Alyssa Calderon of Caldwell University and
McKenzie Rynard of Pittsburg State University moved up to the first team in 2015.
A senior,
Calderon was the first-team catcher. She has a 3.68 G.P.A. as a psychology major. She recently earned Daktronics/Division II CCA All-American honors for the second team. She was an honorable mention selection in 2015 after earning second-team recognition in 2013. Calderon was a four-time All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference honoree at catcher, and also made the Daktronics and NFCA All-East Region teams three times in her career.
A native of Fontana, California, Calderon hit .405 this season with 14 doubles, seven homers and 38 RBI. She was ranked third in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference in average, home runs and doubles, fourth in hits and fifth in RBI. Calderon led the Cougars to the CACC Tournament championship with a pair of three-run home runs and was named the tournament's MVP. She also went 9-for-18 in five games at the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament. Caldwell ended the year with a 37-14-1 record and advanced to the East Region Tournament for the eighth straight year.
The 2013 CACC Player of the Year, Calderon holds the all-time records at Caldwell for RBIs (188), doubles (65) and total bases (406). She also ranks second at Caldwell in home runs (25), third in hits (248) and slugging percentage (.619), eighth in triples (nine) and ninth in batting average (.378).
Rynard hails from Raymore, Missouri and is a psychology major with a 3.84 G.P.A. She helped the Gorillas finish with a 36-19 record. She ranked second on the team with a .336 average, along with leading the team in slugging percentage (.664) and ranking third in home runs (9) and fourth in RBI (30). She added nine doubles.
A senior, Rynard was named to both the NFCA and Daktronics/Division II CCA All-Central Region first teams for the second straight year and was also a first team All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association selection for the second straight season. As a junior she became the first player in Pittsburg State history to earn All-America and Capital One Academic All-America® honors in the same season after leading the MIAA with a .436 batting average and driving in 56 runs.
Kaylee Brunson of the University of Central Oklahoma was named to the second team for the second straight year. The outfielder has a 3.90 G.P.A. as a kinesiology major. The senior was a first team All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association selection for the second straight year after earning second team accolades as a sophomore. She was also named to both the NFCA and Daktronics/Division II CCA All-Central Region second teams.
A native of Tuttle, Oklahoma. Brunson hit .379 with a single-season school-record 83 hits and also led the team in at bats (219), runs (68), triples (six) and stolen bases (34). She hit .377 for her career and set all-time UCO records for at bats (795), runs (223), hits (300) and steals (130). Brunson helped the Bronchos to a 41-20 record and a berth in the NCAA Division II Central Region for the fourth straight year in 2015.
Truman State University senior Andrea Klipsch earned second-team Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA Division II honors after being selected to the third team as a junior. A sociology/anthropology major with a 3.88 G.P.A., Klipsch was a second team All-Great Lakes valley Conference selection after earning first team honors in 2014 and was named honorable mention All-MIAA as a sophomore.
The second baseman from St. Louis, Missouri, helped the Bulldogs to a 33-16 finish and a berth in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional. She led Truman State with 17 home runs and 43 RBI, along with 39 runs. She ranked second on the team in doubles (10) and was fourth in batting average at .331. She was also outstanding in the field, committing just six errors for a .965 fielding percentage.
The rest of the 2015 Capital One Academic All-America® first team includes
pitcher Katie Shockley of the University of Central Missouri, infielders MacKenzi Dorsam of the University of Southern Indiana, Seton Hill University's Christine Henderson, and Elayna Siebert of Carson-Newman University, and
outfielders Courtney Albritton and Fran Johnson, both of Valdosta State University.
The 11-member
second team includes: pitchers
Caitlyn Calhoun of Valdosta State and Winona State University's Ashley Walker; catcher
Melissa Bell and infielder
Ali Cygan of Minot State University; infielders
Brianna Butler of the University of Missouri-St. Louis and
