AUSTIN, TEXAS – Junior outfielder Haylie McCleney of the University of Alabama headlines the 2015 Capital One Academic All-America® Division I softball team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

McCleney has been selected as the 2015 Capital One Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year for Division I softball. An exercise science major with a 4.0 G.P.A., McCleney also was a first-team Capital One Academic All-America® choice last year.

The Morris, Alabama, native has been one of the driving forces for Alabama this season, leading the Crimson Tide in batting average (.453), on-base percentage (.596 – on pace to set a school record), stolen bases (31), runs scored (69), doubles (14) and walks (57). McCleney also stands second on the Alabama roster in hits (72), triples (3), home runs (8), slugging percentage (.730) and total bases (116), in helping the Crimson Tide advance to the NCAA College World Series. Seven of the eight teams competing in Oklahoma City are represented on 2015 Capital One Academic All-America® teams.

McCleney was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America first team, as well as a first-team NFCA all-South Region selection, a first-team all-Southeastern Conference (SEC) pick and SEC All-Defensive Team choice this season. She also was named one of 26 finalists for the USA Softball National Player of the Year award and recently was named the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She is a three-time NFCA All-American.

With more than a year to go in her college career, McCleney owns Alabama’s all-time records for batting average (.454) and on-base percentage (.563), while her .941 career stolen-base percentage (95 of 101) is second-best in Crimson Tide history, and her .690 slugging percentage is third all-time at Alabama.

Exactly half (17) of the 34 members of the 2015 Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA Division I softball teams have at least a 3.90 G.P.A., with seven student-athletes sporting a perfect 4.0 G.P.A. The 11 members of the first-team have an average G.P.A. of 3.87.

In addition to being this year’s Capital One Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year, McCleney is among a group of six student-athletes who are two-time Academic All-America® choices. The other repeat Academic All-America® student-athletes in 2015 are Grand Canyon University senior infielder Kelsey Barak, Arizona State University senior designated player Amber Freeman, University of Oregon junior pitcher Cheridan Hawkins, Murray State University senior Alexa Becker, and Liberty University senior infielder Megan Robinson.

Freeman moved up to the Academic All-America® first team this year after collecting second-team honors as a catcher in 2014. Hawkins and Robinson also garnered first-team accolades this year after earning spots on the Academic All-America® third team a season ago. Becker moved up to the Academic All-America® first team after being a third-team selection in 2013. Barak rounded out this year’s two-time Academic All-America® honorees, receiving second-team recognition for the second consecutive season.

The Capital One Academic All-America® Division I softball first team includes four student-athletes with a perfect 4.0 G.P.A., led by McCleney and Robinson. Joining McCleney as a first team outfielder with a 4.0 G.P.A. is Southern Illinois University senior Kalyn Harker, while Auburn University sophomore Kasey Cooper mirrored Robinson’s 4.0 G.P.A. from an infield position.

Hawkins and UCF senior Mackenzie Audas earn the nod as the pitchers on the Academic All-America® first team, with Manhattan College junior catcher Elena Bowman serving as the battery mate on the first team.

The rest of the Academic All-America® first-team infield includes University of Illinois junior Allie Bauch, while University of Minnesota senior Erica Meyer was the third member of the first-team outfield. Freeman completes the Academic All-America® first team with her selection as designated player.

The Capital One Academic All-America® second team is led by two-time selection Barak and a pair of student-athletes with a perfect 4.0 G.P.A. in University of the Incarnate Word senior outfielder Taylor Johnson and LSU senior designated player Dylan Supak. Kent State University senior Emma Johnson and North Dakota State University senior Krista Menke are the second-team pitchers, throwing to Mercer University junior catcher Natalie Shiver.

Joining Barak on the Academic All-America® second-team infield are Stanford University junior Kayla Bonstrom, University of Tulsa senior Julie Kernen and University of Oklahoma senior Jessica Vest. Johnson headlines a second-team outfield that also includes San José State University senior Michelle Cox and Marshall University sophomore Morgan Zerkle.

Another student-athlete with a perfect 4.0 G.P.A.—Fordham University senior Michele Daubman—leads the Capital One Academic All-America® third team. She is joined in the circle by University of Tennessee junior Erin Gabriel, with University of South Dakota senior catcher Allie Daly completing the battery.

Due to a tie in the voting, there are five members of the Academic All-America® third-team infield, including a pair of graduate students in Oakland University’s Sara Cupp and Mississippi State University’s Julia Echols. Two other seniors—Georgia State University’s Callie Alford and Coppin State’s Candice Van Horn—combine with Murray State sophomore Jessica Twaddle to make up the five-player group.

University of Michigan sophomore Kelly Christner, BYU senior Lacey Hofstedt and Auburn junior Tiffany Howard earn Academic All-America® third-team honors in this year’s outfield, while DePaul University senior designated player Mary Connolly rounds out the third unit.

Joining McCleney on the NFCA All-America first team were Oregon’s Hawkins, Cooper of Auburn, Arizona State’s Freeman and Christner of Michigan. Named to the NFCA All-America second team was Stanford’s Bonstrom, while Auburn’s Howard was a third-team selection.
