Be part of the College Sports Communicators Mentorship program! The first sign up deadline is August 31
College Sports Communicator's popular mentorship program gets a new twist for 2022-23 as two options will be available for those who wish to participate.
The first deadline to sign up for the program is August 31.
Two Tracks: Potluck or Select-a-Mentor
The first option (Track 1) reflects how the program has been administered since its inception in 2015-16. Mentors and mentees are paired on a random basis with consideration given to preferences of experience, goals, geographic location, gender and division. Although not guaranteed, the Mentorship Committee attempts to match as many people as possible with similar interests and goals. Ultimately, though, it cannot be guaranteed that all preferences will be met.
The second option (Track 2) encourages mentees to select their own mentors after several months of reflection and education on how to seek a mentor and how to make the ask of that person. Mentees will sign up but will not immediately be assigned a mentor. Instead, they will meet with the Mentorship Committee to determine best practices for choosing one. For mentors who select this track, you’ll be in a pool of mentors to be considered by mentees.
“Since the program began, the mentorship program has been pairing professionals all over the country that have built lasting relationships. The mentorship program has provided many in the industry with someone outside of their organization to turn to for advice and guidance, both personally and professionally,” Mentorship Committee chair Theresa Kurtz said.
“As our industry grows and evolves so should mentorship connections and relationships. We are thrilled to offer two different paths to choose from within the mentorship program this year. Mentoring doesn’t look the same for everyone and this new approach will offer two different experiences that will hopefully fit the needs of more of CSC's membership.”
All Communicators Welcome
The mentorship program is a benefit of College Sports Communicators membership. More than 700 members have participated in the program in the first seven years of its existence. Be sure to renew your membership today either as an individual, an advocate or through your school or conference. You are able to sign up as a mentor or mentee without current membership, but it will be required once the program begins.
- Advocate Membership (for those not employed full time by a school or conference)
- Individual Membership (for those employed full time by a school or conference)
- University/College Membership (talk with your account custodian about renewal)
If you are joining CSC for the first time and you work in the creative space, the mentorship program is a perfect fit for you. By selecting the second track, you can choose your own mentor for the year.
Although the program does not have strict requirements for the participants, it is expected that mentors and mentees establish consistent communication throughout the academic year.
