2022-23 Academic All-America® Master Schedule
CoSIDA Strengthens Academic All-America® Awards Program with Significant Changes in 2022-23
One of the highest awards in college sports is undergoing significant changes to honor more student-athletes and raise the profile of the prestigious Academic All-America® program.
Sponsored by CoSIDA since 1952, the retooled award program debuts in October and will add two new sports, increase the required GPA and eliminate district voting to advance nominated students to the national All-American ballots.
At its June meeting in Las Vegas, CoSIDA’s Executive Board of Directors approved a plan presented by the Academic All-America Core Committee to update the awards criteria and selection and strengthen several key components of the association’s signature program.
Highlights include:
- Elimination of All-District voting (all eligible nominees earn All-District)
- An increase in the minimum GPA to nominate to 3.50
- The addition of Men’s Swimming & Diving and Women’s Swimming & Diving as sport-specific contests in the winter (previously included in the At-Large program)
- The addition of Men's Tennis and Women’s Tennis as sport-specific contests in the spring (previously included in the At-Large program)
- A limit on the maximum number of submissions by a school in each sport (see the chart below)
- Later nomination periods to include more complete season data
“The goal of the Academic All-America Core Committee is to maintain the strength of the Academic All-America program. These changes will increase the visibility of the brand and strengthen the value of the overall Academic All-America program,” committee chair
Kevin Lanke said. “One of the biggest positives will be the ability for members to nominate student-athletes deeper into a season, meaning more complete statistics and more awards can be included in the nominations.”
The elimination of district voting means all eligible student-athletes advance directly to the national All-America ballot. Each student-athlete on the national ballot will be recognized as a CoSIDA Academic All-District team member and have the opportunity to be selected as a first-, second- or third-team Academic All-America.
“The committee and Executive Board have made important and strategic decisions to strengthen this prestigious awards program. Not only will this continue our recognition of the best and brightest student-athletes at all levels of collegiate athletics, it will also provide more institutions the opportunity to have deserving athletes on the teams and afford better opportunities to promote winners. All of this adds up to a stronger program and a more marketable program for potential corporate partners,” CoSIDA Executive Director
Erik Christianson said.
The jump straight to a national ballot made the decision to increase the minimum GPA to 3.50 an easy one as virtually no winners at the All-America level each year have GPAs between 3.30 and 3.50. Many conferences have a 3.50 minimum GPA for academic all-conference recognition as well.
Academic All-District certificates will continue to be offered via a download from CoSIDA.com. Academic All-America plaques will go from two per winner to one per winner with the school having the option to purchase additional awards at its discretion and cost.
The master calendar for 2022-23 is now available on CoSIDA.com. Only current dues-paying members are permitted to nominate, and late nominations are not accepted. Members who have issues nominating during the prescribed time must contact CoSIDA staff before the period closes to have their student-athletes considered.
During the nine months the program is active, CoSIDA sends weekly emails to members, posts important dates on CoSIDA.com and sends reminders on social media platforms. If you aren’t receiving the Academic All-America weekly emails beginning in late October, check your spam folder before contacting CoSIDA staff.
General program information and nomination criteria will be posted on CoSIDA.com in the coming months.
