Volunteer 15 is an initiative launched in 2014-15 to get College Sports Communicators members more involved in their communities. CSC members promote the great civic works done by their athletics teams but there is no promotion, or very little, about our members doing community service either with these teams or independently. CSC members are encouraged to volunteer at least 15 hours of community service each academic year, then submit your hours using the online form at CollegeSportsCommunicators.com/Volunteer15. CSC committee service hours from meetings and other activities can be submitted

Any questions about the program can be sent to Jeremy Rosenthal at jeremy.Rosenthal@athletics.utexas.edu.

CSC Members Set New Record for #Volunteer15 Hours in 2021-22 Academic Year
by Liz Wacienga – Goodwill and Wellness Committee Member - Volunteer 15 Chair

For the eighth consecutive year, another record was set for the College Sports Communicators #Volunteer15 program. The 2021-22 academic year saw an astounding 12,892 hours logged by a record 148 participants.

Perhaps the biggest achievement this year was reaching new heights since the program’s inceptions in 2014-15. CSC members have recorded 62,020 hours over the past eight years.

For the third straight year, NCAA Division III led the way with 47 participants. NCAA Division II, NAIA and Two-Year Colleges all set their own records with 34, 19 and 7 participants respectively.

Participants continue to serve their communities in various capacities including youth league coaches and referees, church service production teams, meal providers, volunteer firefighters, committee and board members, and so much more. Volunteer roles continue to change as participants helped their communities with Covid-19 testing, contact tracing and delivering meals to those in quarantine.

A record 16 participants recorded 200 hours or more. Those individuals are Bill Wagner (DePauw University), Katie Gonzales (Illinois Wesleyan), Doug Hauschild (University of Dayton), Justin Maskus (Missouri Southern State University), Frank Mercogliano (University of New Mexico), Jay Stancil (Appalachian Athletic Conference), Blake Timm (Great Northwest Athletic Conference), Alisha Alexander (Lewis-Clark State), Sam Atkinson (Gallaudet University), Josh Deer (Concordia-St. Paul), Ira Thor (New Jersey City University), Paul Smith (Texas Woman’s University), Bill Powers (Hawai’i Pacific University), John Martin (Colorado State University), Cindy Potter (Columbia College), Ed Haas (Collegiate Water Polo Association).

For the fourth straight year, Haas led all participants with 1,356 hours after volunteering at West Sadsbury Township Board of Supervisors and the Keystone Valley Fire District.

Volunteer hours can be accrued during July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2023. Members can log hours online at any time throughout the year at CollegeSportsCommunicators.com/volunteer15. Any photos can be sent to Liz Wacienga at lwacienga@gmail.com.

The Volunteer 15 program is an initiative to get CSC members more involved in their communities. The program is designed to help promote the great efforts and successes our members have beyond their athletic communications roles. To qualify, members had to volunteer at least 15 hours during the school year. The program is administered by the Goodwill and Wellness Committee.
