by Chris Mitchell – Granite City School District, Manager of District Communications

When Jeremy Rosenthal wakes up each day, he thinks about how he can make a difference in someone's life.

That could be as simple as interactions with family, friends or co-workers, or smiling at someone or saying hello.

In his words - "All those little things make the world a better place."

Rosenthal, who is completing his first year as University of Texas associate director for communications, is the 2023 recipient of the CSC Bob Kenworthy Community Service Award for his civic involvement and community service involvement and contributions. Rosenthal’s involvement in the CSC with the Goodwill and Wellness Committee dates back 13 years.

“Jeremy embodies the importance of serving others and prioritizing wellness in his day-to-day life. His commitment to the Goodwill and Wellness Committee has been impeccable and he has grown into a leader within our ranks," said Sam Atkinson, Associate Athletic Director for Communications at Gallaudet who helped establish the Goodwill and Wellness Committee in 2008. "Jeremy’s devotion to the various initiatives like the 5K Run/Walk or Community Service project has helped the committee set records and raise funds for various charitable organizations. It is tremendous to see Jeremy honored for his hard work, over the years, and for being selected as this year’s recipient of the Kenworthy Award.”

A member of the Goodwill & Wellness Committee since 2011, Rosenthal is completing his second year as chair and continues to lead a group of communicators who have the same vision of "making a difference."

"When you look at success and happiness, a lot of that has to do with the interactions of other people and the impact you have on them," Rosenthal said. "Being able to do things for someone outside yourself, and improve the lives of others, is so important."

An avid runner and marathoner himself, Rosenthal also serves as the chair of annual CSC 5k run/walk conducted at CSC Convention, which included nearly 300 participants in 2022. Since taking over as race director, Rosenthal has taken the event to the next level and raised nearly $35,000 for charities in the city where CSC is annually hosted.

"Jeremy has been instrumental in the growth and impact the Goodwill and Wellness committee makes at each convention," noted Ryan Davis, Assistant Commissioner for Communications at the Missouri Valley Conference and long-time Goodwill & Wellness Committee member. "He has taken the lead on the annual 5K and has grown it to be one of the premier events at convention every single year.  That growth has led to record making donations to our annual charities for our community service work."

The annual race/walk at the CSC convention has a special place in Rosenthal's heart, and it has developed into an event that people really enjoy. And he soaks it all in.

"It helps us contribute to a cause or an organization every year, and sometimes we even get to see the impact it has first-hand," Rosenthal noted. "And within the organization, it brings us together in a really great way and seeing how much fun people have out there is really special."

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Rosenthal developed the concept of the CSC Fitness Challenge as a way to not only help members achieve their fitness and health goals but to also provide a way for professionals to connect, albeit virtually in many cases.

"People were really struggling with different things during the pandemic and I was really happy with the positive impact that had on bringing people together in a time when people weren't getting as much human interaction, "Rosenthal said. "This was a way to bring people together for fitness, but also to interact and support each other."

Rosenthal's parents - Frank and Sheila - were great role models for Rosenthal at a young age to show what it meant to give back and have a direct impact on people on a daily basis. Dad was a professor and mom was a nurse.

Rosenthal has a picture (see the photo gallery, attached) when he was one-years old volunteering at a nursing home with his mom, going around interacting with patients despite not being able to talk! And Rosenthal even followed in dad's footsteps, teaching a class at Indiana for six years.

"It's been fun for me as a professional to give back to the younger generation and have that impact on college students," Rosenthal added.

In addition to his dedication and commitment to CSC, Rosenthal was very active during his nine years while in the communications office at his alma mater Indiana University. He served as a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, the Hoosier Hills Food Bank and the Boys and Girls Club.

Rosenthal's message to CSC members is simple.

"Find a cause that you are passionate about and it will make your life more fulfilling. Step outside yourself and do something for someone else and make their day better."
